Will Hotspot at Home work on a phone not issued by T-mobile?
Hi.
I'm looking to switch to T-mobile from Alltel.
One of the features that appeals to me is the Hotspot at home.
I am looking to purchase an unlocked phone and I was wondering if that feature will work on an unlocked phone or do I need to purchase a T-mobile phone for the Hotspot service to work properly.
Furthermore, if I do need to purchase a T-mobile phone, which phone do you recommend for the Hotspot service, one that has the best all around features.
Should I wait for any new releases in the second or third quarter of 2008?

i doubt the iPhone will work with hotspot at home. if the phone is wifi, I still doubt it'll connect. It's a part of the programming on the phone. If it was any wifi phone, then you could have unlimited calling at any wifi signal spot, and that just ain't gonna happen.

Yes you CAN NOT use the iPhone for T-mo wifi calling.

If you have a T-Mo UMA wifi phone, you certianly make free calls from ANY wifi you can connect to... Not just where you have the hotspot modem hooked up.

tmobile has UMA enabled phones that allow u to make calls over wifi. for reception purposes. if u pay a certain feature per month, those calls u make on wifi are unlimted and will not be billed out of ur minutes.

well well well. that's sweet. thanks. what kinda router do they need in the house to activate this? I heard they need to buy a special t-mobile router? but from the looks of what you've told me, they just need any router.

Any router will work, but if you use a router sold by Tmobile, it will give priority for the wi-fi to the phone, supposedly giving you better phone service.

I would wait for sprint to release airave. Its like tmobiles hotspot at home just it works off the same freq as CDMA so any CDMA phone sprint has or had will work. And it supports up to 5 at a time. With tmobile they only have a few phones that are wifi capable. I think verizon will also go to something like that. Tmobile limited their options when they went to wifi.

Just as a side note, we had a phone that could use the HotSpot and we took it back. My husband is a network admin so I'm sure he had some idea of what he was working with, but no one could help us figure out why it wasn't working, other than the network being "down", which was repeatedly blamed.
