Why are the First 3G phones Low End ?

Why is T-mob releasing their first 3G phones in the low end spectrum ? What crack are they smoking ?! Who cares that you have a super fast network on a phone with no OS, poor browser, no multimedia streaming capabilities, no secondary camera for video calls. The folks who are buying these phone will most likely not be using data to any serious extent, with exception to downloading ringtones. But you can do that just fine with the current Edge network. You really only need the new Spectrum for higher end phones and PDAs.

Thats my 3cents worth

T-Mobile's 3G service is only going to include Voice at first. High speed data is going to come later. New phones are going to come out that will support the 3G voice network only at first and then the handsets that will support the high speed data will come later. I would imagine this is because the voice aspects of it are being built first. All of it costs millions of dollars so money has to be made back by launching handsets that will support voice first. Hence data comes later.

You can't seriously be suggesting that T-Mo is financing its 3G rollout on the sale of handsets?!!! I get the problem that T-Mo has had with the government vacating the 1700 spectrum, but the rest of excuse-making for the delays in 3G rollout, including data, is getting ridiculous. Sometime in 2010 or 2011 when they get around to it, a lot of the customer base is long since going to have left for ATT or Verizon.

Not just on handsets, of course not. But it also makes sense for a company to release products on a tiered approach. Companies make the most amount of money doing it that way. Ever notice how products get a little better with each new release? Companies could launch stuff with huge advancements with each release of a specific type of product but they wouldn't make nearly as much money. As an example, digital cameras are up to, what, 8, 9 or 10 megapixel? Why aren't they as good on a cell phone? They could be, the technology is there...But instead, they started with VGA, then 1.3, then 2.0, and so on. All of these things are a factor when it comes to releasing new stuff onto a market.

it would not make sense to roll it out.

The average american is just getting their feet wet with 3G.

The average american still downloads their games and ringtones and wall papers right off their phone.

Why not cater to the average american? Thats where most the business comes from.

On a Side note, why did T-mob not use the 2100 band like in europe/asia for the 3G network. Was it unavailable ? Because t-mob is the only operator in north america to use the 1700 mhz band for 3g, it will significantly limit the number of available high end phone with 3G to support it. It seems that the only ones that will be compatable with it are those made specifically for t-mobile. And because t-mobile is far from being a very large operator in the USA, i cant see nokia remaking their N95 8gb or whatever to support t-mob frequency. Unless they go back to making US specific phones again with 800/1700/1900 available for 3G.
