phone as modem

as technology changes in the phones that we own, so do the need and capacity of our wireless network providers.

i am interested in using my unlimited data plan from t-mobile with my apple laptop via bluetooth as a modem.
which model(s) work with these specifications, and which one(s) have the best service/coverage.
i already own the 8700 blackberry on a different network, so I dont want a blackberry, but i was told by the reps over the phone that the nokia 2610 is the cheapest phone to do that job for me.
thanks.

That may be the cheapest but the easiest are the WM phone (wing, dash, shadow). they have a built in program thats called internet share and it gives you the option between USB (not really an option unless you have the latest missing sync) and Bluetooth. The bluetooth options sets up a PAN mode which if your already paired, you should be able to connect to it and go online in less than 30seconds. Now there performance varies from user to user. I gave my wing to my wife and I got a curve, I need a stable and powerful OS (sound familiar apple guy)

That may be true but t-mobile doesnt currently offer any SE phones, and the original poster was looking for something relatively cheap. I only offered the selection I presented because he may eventually need more functionality later on (it always happens) 😳

you can tether using DUN (works on 99% models)
the best phone for tethering is T639 because it has 3G

as far as the 2610 goes for tethering, you will need to purchase a special usb cable for the phone. you will also need to download nokia's pc suite from nokia's website, which is free. after that you will need to download a few drivers, so just make sure your mac have internet running on it already and those should download automatically. after that you set up a dial up connection, put in *99# for the number to call, and bam! all done.

the Nokia 5300 is much easier asd well as the T639. the 5300 comes with a usb cable and through my experience gets good connection speeds. the 5300 is $49.99 with a 2 year contract after rebates, so not very spendy as well.

I may be wrong but isnt the PC suite from Nokia fully functioning only for windows, I believe the mac version only supports media and maybe some pim functions. Any driver necessary are usually windows drivers (macs usually configure themselves, ah intelligence). He can follow thse steps if he were running Virtual PC(PPC) or Parallels/VMware(intel) and use windows in an emulated enviroment or if he had a regular PC. 😕

very true actually, I'm am far from being a mac expert, so I sometimes forgot that some software is not compatible with them. I believe if he has or gets the new mac ibook with the Intel chip it will work though. I could be wrong, so please correct me if i am.
