A question for T-Mobile Insiders

Well, I know T-Mobile is a much bigger company (in europe) than Cingular ever was and They had the first GSM network in the USA (cingular was TDMA at that time). Then how did cingular build a much better network in terms of coverage and 3g services and T-Mobile with their deep pockets just sat on the side line? There is a missing step here that I don't know about. Can someone please explain.

thanks

T-mobile and DT funded their overseas operations more than they did with their USA operations. When Cingular bought out Att Wireless it allowed them to already have the necessary 3G spectrum to launch that network.

T-mobile USA was lacking in spectrum overall and did not get a chance to win any 3G spectrum up until this past AWS auction. So without spectrum overall you can build out a network everywhere. Now things have changed so now they can. Without having spectrum hurts your ability to build out a network as T-mobile USA has experienced while the merger between Cingular and ATT Wireless gave them an instant increase in coverage.

OK..i understand about the spectrum, but what is the reason for the lack of coverage? don't you think instead of having cheap plans, charge more like the other carriers and build out the network?

Ok so there are a few ways of expanding your coverage. 1. By buying spectrum then installing base stations and equipment. 2. Roaming deals, but you still have to have spectrum or else it would be a waste of money.

Cheap plans means nothing because if you cannot get spectrum in the first place you will not be able to roll out plans unless you are an MVNO type of operation. The other carriers actually have spectrum and spend billions on it as well as to build out their network.

They need spectrum to grow or else they will not be able to grow the way they want. Having limited spectrum hurts the company in number of ways.

wouldn't exactly classify t-mobile's coverage as worse than ATT. JD Powers has classified them as #1 across all six regions in america. of course local coverage will vary, check coverage maps to find the company that best suits you.

I would. T-mobile has less towers and spectrum then AT&T. JDpowers reports mean nothing. T-mobile’s coverage and capacity are two huge areas in where they need to increase. Obviously with the purchase of Suncom and during the AWS auction allows them to secure more spectrum, but they need to continue to build on their existing tower portfolio before they even are compared to AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint. T-mobile is doing well, but they need to do a lot better, and securing AWS spectrum allows them to reach this feat, but the other one is expanding their coverage.

Well, I have noticed that they have pretty good roaming agreements with other carriers. I like T-Mobiles' service as well.

T-mobile is also following a plan outlined by the GSM association regarding 3g services. Before ATT had even launched their version of 3g, they were working on their version of 4g as well. A risky move--as the newest technology will have the higher price tag. Once t-mobile launches their 3g, they'll be able to provide high speed data at a much lower cost than all the other wireless providers, as its been out for a bit. At least, thats the way I see it. ATT may have larger coverage and the first to launch newer technology, but as such, they'll always ALWAYS be the most expensive.

Yea many people do but they need to expand on the topics in which I discussed. When they do that, they will be a force to be reckoned with.
