And I bet that once the BB start having Wi-Fi in them as a regular feature, the BB users will start seeing the data plan go from $19.99 to $29.99 to include Hotspots. LOL.

I don't get why a blackberry needs uma?
๐Ÿคจ

1st. The uma feature sucks. I've used it personally and the hand-off drops way to often for any one in the business world!

2nd. It's another thing to drain the battery. Most blackberry users have blue tooth headsets because the phones are so big. If they tried to use UMA and BT the battery doesn't stand a chance.

In my own personal opinion UMA devices are a great idea but I truly don't think they will be very popular in the long run.

i think it is different for everyone. it all depends on location, if you are using your router, or the one actually used for the hotspot phones.

i also have used it on both a linksys wireless G and the one from T-mo.. my personal router drained the battery and dropped calls, the t-mo router helped quite a bit. UMA is supposed to extend battery life. but who knows.

i agree there needs to be a lot more done before the UMA system is perfect.

it could also depend on you market. i am in minneapolis. feedback is about 85% positive.

it is also nice to have unlimited minutes usin the UMA service.

but the main point was it is going to have WiFi for data.. that is all that i care about, i assume others would.

No you are right about the extra data speed, it does make the phone more appealing to most people.

Don't get me wrong i like the idea of uma in theory. However I don't feel this feature will be really popular until all the bugs are worked out of it.

My main problem with uma is that carriers charge their users for it. It's a feature of the phone that if anything saves the carrier money by keeping users off the towers. This is like charging people to use the camera on their phone.

Once all the bugs are worked out of uma and carriers stop charging users I think uma devices will be allot more popular

Did you use the T-Mobile router or your own? Ive noticed that people that use their own routers have many issues, where people with the T-Mobile router expierence not nearly as many issues.

Also regarding the cost of UMA, people misconcieve the way it works. It does not use the internet to get all the way to another providers switch, like any normal VoIP. It uses the internet to get to a T-Mobile switch then to the other providers switch. So it still is at a cost to T-Mobile. The reason why it is unlimited is because it is inherently limited(location).

A switch engineer explained in detail how it works, because I asked him the same question that most do, why does it cost anything? The reason, it doesnt work the way most assume.

Actually we don't charge for UMA. We charge for having unlimited minutes over UMA not for the actual use of the feature. It still uses our switches so 9.99 for unlimted access is not a bad deal.

T-Mobile doesn't charge for this service. It's only an extra cost if you don't want it to count against your minutes. If it was draining your battery, then you must have been using a non t-mobile router. A normal router is constantly pinging the handset, which drains the battery because it's having to work extra hard. A T-Mobile branded router prioritizes(sp?) voice over data so it won't drop your calls and it doesn't drain your battery. This was in testing for months to perfect it with the routers that T-Mobile is selling. They're not going to perfect with routers they don't sell, that doesn't make any sense.

I dont know why people slam the UMA @home feature?!! I've been using it with a 6086 and it ROCKS!!! the Curve is going to be great! The sze of it is really just a bit wider than the pearl, which a use without bt. And with battery life, well if you dont us the wifi you can TURN IT OFF! Also, all high end data devices SUCK down power, get used to it! As for the popularity of the devices, UNLIMITED CALLS FROM WIFI not popular???? Home buss. snap this up as do road warriors.
