This is According to the one and only Boy Genius...

Yeah, you heard it here first, folks. Barring any unforeseen roadblocks, T-Mobile’s 3G UMTS network might be launching within the month. How do we know this, you might ask? The Samsung t639, that’s how. The t639, set to drop on September 10th, is T-Mobile’s first 3G equipped handset offering. The phone sports a 1700 MHz UMTS radio, allowing it to access the fastest data network ever offered by the boys in Pink. The phone itself is pretty standard mid-level fare, sporting a megapixel camera, Bluetooth, microSD slot, and more. When a highly anticipated network revision is on the line, however, the details don’t seem to matter as much. There is a possibility that T-Mobile will launch...

Funny how this news pops a week after I had several people jump down my throat for asking the question of when to expect 3G (see my thread of Aug 6). Over on WMExperts yesterday, Dieter Bohn picked up the Boy Genius posting and also noted: "Still and all, T-Mo needs to get the 3G rocked soon." But these guys probably also haven't built out any 3G networks lately, so maybe they too shouldn't be commenting. 🙂 Anyway, the news is encouraging, expecially for those of us in major markets like NYC that will hopefully see the upgrade sooner rather than later.

not really upgrading the towers to wimax more like adding to the towers. Wimax is run on a whole differant spectrum. Much like GSM 3g which is run off WCDMA!

Straight from T-Mobile's own Product and Service Guide. The T639 did get approved by the FCC for 3g, 2 days later 3g chips were banned from Qualcomm, which is what the phone used. So it would be illegal for this phone to be imported and sold..

Actually, if it was already imported from what I hear T-Mobile should still be able to sell the phone. How else would Verizon, Sprint and AT&T be planning to sell the RAZR2?

Not sure about Sprint and AT&T, but Verizon cut its own deal with Broadcom to do an end run around the Qualcomm patent problem.

It is a 3G phone. T-Mobile just isn't making that publicly known.

How do you know that? Our engineering guy said that our first 3 g phones would come from Nokia and Sony Ericsson. He assured me this is not a 3 g phone, it is simply the tmobile gsm version of Alltel's Hue. Do you have some secret connection to Robert Dodson or something?

From everything the local engineers are telling me as a employee, your looking at some time in 08 folks.

Just because the company wants to get new phones 3g compatable doesn't mean 3g is coming out the day this phone hits the shelves.

The company does want future phones to be 3g compatible so in 08 when they switch it on (if they do) they already are selling the right phones and a lot of customers will already have 3g in their hands.

might be a 3g phone... but it doesn't mean we will launch it.

engineers are of course going to say it is not because they would be told to not tell us.

remember the Samsung T609? that was myFaves and no one knew until we launched it. same with the t209. they were all myFaves before we launched it.

i dunno.. all i am hearing is Q4 2007 and Q1 2008.
