Cingular Discount vs. Verizon Discount

As stated on here previously - I tried Verizon but because I didn't like the LG 8100 (after trying it out) and none of their other phones turn me on - I am thinking of going with Cingular - as it appears they have better phones and don't cripple Bluetooth.

My problem: Verizon will give me an 18% discount for being a a retiree with the Department of State (U.S. Government) - does anyone know if Cingular will match that discount?

Thanks

Are there other discounts available for Cingular like AAA for example?

Cingular offers many discounts for many different types of employees....Most government agenices and military will MOST LIKELY be able to get a discount. Other firms include, Lockheed Martin, Home Depot, ST. Paul Travelers, and many of the labor unions. You could go to your Human Resource department and ask them, specifically, for a Foundation Account Number (FAN Code). This is the code that the cingular call center reps will use to place the discount on your account. OF course they will then follow up to make sure you do in fact work there.

Here is my problem: as a retired foreign service officer with the State Department - I still qualified for an 18% Verizon disocunt (and I might still avail myself of that discount depending on a few new phones being released shortly). However, I would love to give Cingular a shot if I could get that discount matched. As I said, I am retired, I don't deal (any longer) with USG HR Departments. I don't know how I would get this code (Verizon only asked me to prove I was a USG retiree - which I did).

In order for Cingular to possibly gain a new

Go to a cingular store and ask the same thing, or call 1-800-331-0500. it'll ask you to put a phone number in, just put in 555-555-5555 and it'll tell you that number isn't found, keep putting it in, you'll then be transferred to a real person.

When I was Cingular if you aren't actually employed by said company the max discount is 5%, in my market... North central. Retirees don't get the full discount and the largest discount I remember seeing was 12%.

yikes, that's crazy. I know in my market - Northeast (upstate NY) we usually come pretty close. We may not beat them, but the rollover minutes out weigh that 1 - 5% difference.

Well it will probably come down to dollars off; after all, I view both companies about equal: giving Cingular the edge for their phones and Verizon for their reception (at least, where I live) and customer service. So if Verizon is willing to give me 18% off (family plan - first member rate) and waive the activation fee (two year contract) - then it will come down to whether Cingular can get close to those figures - if they can't then I'll wait for the new Verizon Samsung A-970.

Question: is a Cingular store and/or authorized dealer empowered to match that discount or give me say 10% off and thrown in 200 minutes?
