I have an ATT phone so I ordered a SIM card only, entered all the info to port out of VZW.
SIM card isn't supposed to arrive for a couple days, but my current VZW phone quit working yesterday.
As if someone completed the port out already. But usually you need to actually put the SIM card into the new phone before you loose service on your old phone.
Little miffed that I'm without service for a few days.
It's very, very common to have "mixed service" for up to 72 hours when porting a number around. All the back-office communication that happens at Verizon to release the number pays no attention at all to whatever timestamps and queues are triggered on the AT&T side of the transaction (i.e. SIM card insertion). All the timing is handled by business systems.
Initiating a port prior to the second phone being activated is expected to interrupt service in most cases.
