Does Anyone Know Why AT&T Has Deactivated The FM Radio On The Galaxy S II

I love my new phone.
It does everything I need and more.

When I ordered the sales rep was pushing the fact it had an regular and HD FM Radio( We have alot of HD radio stations here in the Austin-San Antonio area)that other smart phones and regular phones did not have.

But when I received it and started exploring the different functions the FM radio option has been deactiaved.

Does anyone know if this is going to be addressed in a future software upgrade?

Also the one other thing that made me mad was AT&T made me change get rid of my unlimited text, multimedia and data plan I have had for the past five years!

It was originally called just the unlimited everything then they added non smart phone to it. The sales rep told me I...

I'm not sure about the FM radio (I have the GS2 so it interests me too), it may be addressed in a future firmware upgrade, or maybe AT&T was misinformed on it and there is no FM radio.

For the data plan, the only one you can keep when upgrading to a smartphone is the Personal Data for $30. Older smartphone data plans are being phased out from what I understand.

I was hoping Rich or Eric would have seen my previous post and maybe would have some information that samsung may have given them recently about the FM radio for the galaxy s II.

I am kind of surprised. Even with the lower end non smart phones an FM radio is starting to be included. Heck they could have thrown in a few extra goodies like they did with the infuse and focus.

Losing my unlimited text, multimedia and data plan that I paid $30 a month for ( after my company's corporate 25% discount made it around $20 dollars a month) kind of sucked. I hope the T-Mobile merger goes thru and they adopt some of their pricing plans.

Did you have a smartphone previously? That plan sounds like the Unlimited Messaging/Data for $30 that is still offered to non smartphones. The smartphone plans before that were the PDA Personal for $30, I don't recall one that included unlimited text. Media Max plans, Media Works, and Media Basic were all limited plans.

Also, AT&T probably killed the FM because they want you to subscribe to AT&T Radio or XM and pay monthly.

I swear, paying for radio is so, sooo stupid. Radio has been *free* for over a century, why start oaying now?

I agree, it is pretty stupid. Then again, I just listen to music I load onto my phone, never really cared much for radio.

Yeah, really the only radio I do listen to is talk radio, cause I'm a bored-ass security guard @ work.

I don't even buy CD's anymore. If theres any music I want I just download it from AmazonMP3 app right from my phone.

I only buy CDs if I really like the band and would like to have a solid copy, or if the packaging is just that amazing (which is rare anymore). I bought one of my favorite albums of all time because of the packaging and album artwork, didn't know the band or even what kind of music it was XD

I bought the International SGS 2 i9100 version. Gave them the phone IMEI and got the unlimited MediaNet Plan for $10. Its not registered on the ATT network as a smart phone.

One of the reasons is the FM Radio and the unregistered IMEI as well. I have not used an ATT phone in 20 years. I bought the iPhones and sell them to buy International versions which as always better and although there is not LTE and UL speeds are only 3mbs saving hundreds a year on two devices is worth it since we are on WiFi 90% of the time.

I think ATT wants people to use Streaming media so we buy the expensive plans. FM is good enough for me.

They will catch you, the imei will update in the system and you will be required to add a smart-phone data plan....

P.S. - try to pay a little more attention to dates on the threads your replying to, this place is pretty dead.

LOL I GAVE them the IMEI of mine and the wife's SGS II i9100s and they offered the mediaNet plan because it did not show up as a smart phone....

. The only time they caught me was when I put a SIM card in an iPhone for a couple days. They cannot possibly register every IMEI in the world in their system. That is why they don't catch the very few of us who have been using Nokias and other non ATT registered devices.

I will reply to any threads I deem relevan...

Yes you can download the app but now since they don't have unlimited data plans anymore you have to use data to listen to local radio now? We have two local radio stations that blow most of the national radio stations out of the water (107.1 HD2 No Control 24/7 no commercial metal station - 103.5 HD2 Mega-Dance Club) I know I am being picky but having a FM radio feed on my phone is nice.

The HTC HD7, Freestyle, Motorola Atrix 2, Samsung Focus and LG Thrive/ Phoenix all have built in radio (I have a friend that even picks up the HD radio stations here in town with his samsung focus) if a phone is built with it in why not let us use it?

Because they want you to use DATA to get radio. That is why I bought the International version i900. Flashed a custom ROM and Kernel and have a dump phone unlimited data plan for $10 a month.

The I9000 has an FM Radio.
