What are you told about upgrading GoPhones? What process do you follow?

I'm very interested to know, because from what I hear everyone says something different.

AT&T retail reps regularly send people into Walmart and Target to buy new phones.

Customer goes in store and says I want this phone and that's it. Usually stores are limited to phones in stock and if a customer is directed to walmart or target it is because they want the stock for new customers.

Not correcr, there are specific phones for prepaids. If you walk in a store and say I want this for prepaid you will pay full price, very expensive. You should go to walmart or bestbuy

Perfoming an upgrade on a line implies that you are signing a new contract and getting discounted price on a new phone. However, since there is no contract on Go Phones, there is no discount on new equipment. Att only gives some discounts on a few models of phone when you sign up for new GO Phone service. When you want a new phone, unfortunately, ATT stores cannot give much, if any discount off of the full retail price of the phone. That is why customers are told to go to Target or Wal-Mart to get a new GO phone. Those stores will sell the GO Phone package to anyone at the discounted price. The customer can put his SIM card into that phone and continue his service.

I work in an ATT call center and to be honest since there is no contract with a GoPhone (that I'm aware of) you don't get to upgrade. So if you're looking to get a new GoPhone then you would have to just purchase a cheap GoPhone at like walmart or your local ATT store.

I use the word 'upgrading' interchangeably with 'replacing' here. So if someone comes in and is all "I want a new GoPhone, what can you do for me?" pretty much.

Online, we're told that we can't suggest that they order GoPhones online since it's "phantom churn" and they count as a new customer when doing that and it messes up AT&T's numbers or something, yet I get people from stores pointing people to get new GoPhones online.

So I'm just confused as to if I'm being told the right thing. Because it's getting old.

Honestly? You're best bet would to be go in store since the online site has been having issues the past few days. So to be on the safe side i would just go in store and say that you want to get a new phone for your prepaid service.

Phantom Churn would only occur if the new GoPhone is activated with a new number instead of using the old SIM or having the new SIM activated on the OLD number. An upgrade is defi...

??? No there is no such thing as an upgrade on a go phone. Except for the fact that you keep your same number. You can purchase a new phone for yourself at any time at whatever discounts they currently have on non-contracted devices, or full retail on there contracted line up.
