Comparing a coverage map Verizon provided of AT&T's network and AT&T provides of its own network is like comparing spinach and bananas. They're both food, that's about it.

That map was accurate at the time. It was a big hoopalah.

AT&T sued Verizon over the commercial, not because it was inaccurate, but because they though it attempted to mislead people into believing that AT&T barely had any coverage. AT&T lost the suit, because all the ads were clearly indicated that the map represented AT&T's 3G coverage.

The map was extremely misleading. It compared Verizon's EVDO (3G) to AT&T's HSPA (3.5G). If they wanted to be honest, which of course they didn't, they'd compare EVDO to UMTS coverage, which was comparable at the time. Maybe that's why AT&T has been so slow with LTE. The last time they deployed a new technology, it gave their competitors and ad campaign.

You may be thinking of EDGE. AT&T's EDGE coverage would have been comparable to Verizon's EVDO at the time.

All AT&T's 3G sites had been upgraded to HSPA when that commercial ran, so none would have been running UMTS any longer.
