I just spent $300 on a new LG GR500 (Xenon) the end of last year, now we learn AT&T will soon have the 4G Network. This is really unfair to people who spend big bucks for new phones, only to find out their previous phones are not compatible with the New Networks. This happend to me before! I had 2 accounts with AT&T back when they used the TDMA Network and paid 500.00 for 2 new phones. When Cingular took over AT&T they degraded my service, so I could no longer use my phones I was more then very pissed!! Cingular informed me I'd have to purchased their Phones, to use with their network I said no but hell no and went with Alltel. I got back with AT&T 2 years ago and really love being with them, now I'm afraid my new Xenon won't work with their...

First if all, 3G is not going anywhere. You won't be forced to upgrade to 4G (this is a completely new network if we are talking about LTE) However, HSPA+ (also 3G and now considered 4G) is an upgrade to the existing 3G
Bottom line is, yes! You'll continue to use your Xenon without any problems

Thanks so very much this really puts my mind at ease! I was so afraid of going through the same thing again. People really do need Cell phones these days and I didn't want to be without mine.

thanks again! 😁

FYI----your xenon will not work with HSPA+ nor LTE. The phone only supports the UMTS and EDGE. HSPA+ and LTE different chip sets. You will still have service and not be forced into getting into another phone. Hope it helps! 😎

Don't worry, only a month ago AT&T's 4G network was called AT&T's 3G network. What you have is the same technology as what AT&T is now calling 4G, just in a previous (slower) iteration. They only decided to start calling their high-end 3G network a 4G network after the ITU decided that 3G "could" be marketed as 4G.

As opposed to another carrier who began calling their HSDPA+ 4G BEFOR the ITU changed their definition.

Sure, but we were talking about AT&T, who merely jumped on the bandwagon.

In the same respect, you could lump Verizon and Sprint into the craziness. Not a one of them have "technical 4G," but all of them have "marketing 4G."

I guess my point was to let the OP know what the only reason they weren't invited to the 4G party was because their phone isn't quite as 4G as the rest, even though it's as much 4G as the rest of them (technically, speaking).

Less "jumping on the bandwagon" than just marketing to match the competition. If Mktg had not, it would have been viewed as a negative vs. the competition, even though it was equivalent service (and in many cases already faster).

Sorry, jumping on the marketing bandwagon. I thought the use of the phrase in this instance would be more obvious.

Your phone will work fine, but why did you spend that much money on a Xenon?

The reason we spent so much is because we've had our share of problems with, refurbished to new or used phones. My niece is the one that did the post and made an error. I would never pay 300.00 for a Phone! I got 2 phones for that price, my Xenon was only about 175.00 the rest was for my brother's Shine. I really appreciate your reply on this issue. Thanks for the info! 😁
