So is anybody actually buying that retarded arse of a deformed phone that the Motorola Backflip is? If people knew 4 more -supposed- Android phones are coming to ATT, they'd be better off waiting.
Personally I think I'm going to wait to see what Google ends up having that will be available for ATTs 3G network over @ google.com/phone
ATT has proven they can't be trusted with Android phones.
...
So much hate just over google search?? Get over it!
I'd buy it if it had better battery life. thats the only real downfall of the phone.
...
Actually I heard Google Maps was also removed! How stupid of a design this is with the keyboard facing out with the camera built into the keyboard. I read PS's review, you'll get smudges all over the cameras lense when typing.
...
google maps is pre-loaded, you can get smudges on just about every camera phone...look at the nexus one.
...
The N1's camera isn't located on the frinkin keyboard which is a high traffic area for fingers.
Have you read PS's review of the deformed Backflip?
...
so what do you recomend holding the nexus one with?? the only way to avoid fingerprints on phones like that is to wear latex gloves 24/7 have you ever looked at the back of an iphone? its all fingerprints. ya I have read it. Thats why I said I wouldn't own one because of the battery life.
...
I really don't think the issue with the battery life is the device itself, it's MotoBlur constantly transmitting & recieving. Personally I don't get what the big deal is with social networking, email works plenty fine for me.
...
Ya, email may be king 3 years ago, but social networking is huge now and only growing every day.
Your right on moto blur killing the battery.
...
I just don't understand the advantage of social networking over email.
...
Lets be honest, first off this phone is a Motorola abomination. They made this as a social networking handset for kids and to re-establish their name in the AT&T market. AT&T will use this handset to lock in family contracts every time Jr. loses his phone. The fact that AT&T crippled the Android OS won't matter to a 14 year old.
...
So I have a question. I'm new to android and motoblur. What exactly did at&t cripple with this phone besides removing google search and adding yahoo one search?
...
The strength of an open platform is the flexibility it offers to companies, developers and consumers. That openness is a factor in the rapid growth of the Android platform in the smartphone world. Companies can customize the interface, such as HTC with Sense, and consumers can install any Android apps they desire in order to personalize the user experience. AT&T has just entered the Android space with the Backflip by Motorola, but as new owners are pointing out, the phone is crippled to the point of being a closed device.
We’d already heard that AT&T had replaced Google search with Yahoo search throughout the phone. This move alone is rather bizarre, given consumer preference for Google search and especially since Andro

Very well said PACWEST! You have covered all the points of opensource Android.
If I could just reiterate and speak to any AT&T employees here, please do not take this as criticism of your company. It is simply a acknowledgement of what your average smartphone user of the future will be looking for and expecting when they do make the switch from their feature phone to a smartphone.
AT&T already has one closed platform device on their network, that being the iphone. While that device is immensely popular it is not the device for everyone. Many people have rejected the iphone because it is a closed device.
For those customers opensource Android will be their smartphone OS answer.
Opensource means that a device should remain open to the e...

thats really interesting info. I think the android customer base is usually aware of the latest and greatest which probably shows why we have had such a low take rate in the first week of us offering the backflip. I hope at&t listens to the customers and offers a non bloatware version of an android device. Thats ridiculous that you can't uninstall preloaded programs to free up memory.
...
There is always the option of acquiring a Telus Milestone, yes?
...
Wow! Who would have thought that it would be AT&T not VZW who figured out a way to "cripple" an Android handset. Is this Bizarro world or what? I'm sure Verizon is taking notes though.
...
Actually I heard Google Maps was also removed, not just search! How stupid of a design this is with the keyboard facing out with the camera built into the keyboard. I read PS's review, you'll get smudges all over the cameras lense when typing.
...
I agree with Jayshmay on this one. If you don't do your research and buy this phone, you WILL be sorry that you didn't wait. It's not a bad phone, but there will be much better (there had better be better) Android options coming to at&t soon.
...
ATT is in bed w/Yahoo. Probably the only way to get a *TRUE* Google Android phone is if it says "With Google" on it, or if it comes from the
google.com/phone site and it has ATT 3G. Probably best to google.com/phone route that way updates will come much quicker.
...
Just wait for someone to figure out how to root it and install a non-at&t ROM. That's definitely going to be the most cost effective way considering the retail cost versus the at&t subsidized price.
...
True, but I still don't want the deformed Backflip. I'm not interested in MotoBlur, I'm not a social networking frk, EMAIL works just fine, plus I prefer a *correct* keyboard sliding Android smartphone.
So is the Backflip getting any sales?
...
Yea, we've sold quite a few but I tell everyone who is on the line of whether to get it or not to wait a month or two.
...
What sorts of people have been buying this deformed phone?
...
Jay, your bias is suffocating. We know it is a horrible phone. 🤣 🤣 🤣
...
ATT has proven they can't be trusted with Android phones.
True, so why would Google sell a phone without ATT's approval?
Obviously ATT's still want's some control over whats on the device. Where as TMO didn't care and who knows if VZW's version of the Nexus One will be sold by Google untouched by VZW.
...
ALL "Google phones" will be sold directly by Google through google.com/phone. That's probably the route I will take. I just wish the WHOLE INDUSTRY would change. There shouldn't be ANY carrier branding or bloatware. All the carrier is needed for is to provide a *SIGNAL* to my phone, nothing more, nothing less.
...
This isn't Europe here. If people want their phone's unmolested by a carrier then they will have to buy it outright and deal with the manufacturer themselves. Too bad people are to cheap and lazy to do that...
...
Well, I might end up getting a *real* Android smartphone from google.com/phone
...
Jayshmay said:
Well, I might end up getting a *real* Android smartphone from google.com/phone...brought to you by HTC..
Fixed.
...
Yep, fixed. I need nothing more and nothing less than a signal to my phone from ATT. Beyond that bud out of a phone that I paid for with MY money!
...
Why not the Telus Milestone, Jay?
...
Have you heard of anybody using one on ATT? And the settings all work?
...
I've not ordered any. I've had one peron ask, but he was interested in Android. I was nice enough to let him know that AT&T marred it a tad.
...
Wow, only 1 person has asked. And was that about the Backflip specifically, or Android in general? So how did this person feel when you shared with him what ATT did?
I'm considering going over to Spint to get the HTC Supersonic. I just wonder what it's like having a phone conversation on a phone that has a whopping 4.3in screen, I'm wondering if it might be too cumbersome and big.
...
I'm also surrounded by cornfields. Very rural area with lots of elderly.
That was him debating between the Backflip and iPhone. He didn't seem too upset, figured it to be typical most likely. He seemed to be on the up and up with phones.
...
I just sold one. The customer said he had three requirements.
1. touchscreen with physical keyboard
2. social networking oriented
3. insurable.
The backflip was definitely the best fit for him!
...
Yep, definetly a fit. Guess he doesn't mind the Backflips deformity. Any returns yet?
...
Not yet, thats the first one we have sold. But we've had pretty positive feedback at our other locations. Its definitely a niche product.
...
And it's going to be like what, at least another 5wks before another Android handset hits ATT? I'm just throwing out a guess.
Did ATT slaughter Google Maps too?
...
I haven't even looked at it to be honest. It just frustrates me on the other phones we sell that don't have maps preloaded and whenever you go to use it the phone prompts you ever 4 seconds asking if its ok to use the network connection to transfer data. Drives me bonkers.
...
My N95 isn't any different. I wouldn't say it does it constantly, but it does quite frequently.
...
Yep, definetly a fit. Guess he doesn't mind the Backflips deformity. Any returns yet?
Nice to hear from somebody on PS! Today has been a slow day!
...
Yep, I do. From my tax refund. I'm going to wait about 10 days to read some reviews to see if the problems that the Tmo N1 had have been resolved. Fortunatly it'll fit in my nice brown leather case I bought from Pocket Solutions 2+yrs ago.
...
You had better do that, becasue they're not meant for pockets...
...
Uh no, it has a 3.7in screen, not exactly something that should be put in a pocket.
So what do you think fellow Phone Scooper, do you think I should take the plunge and pay the $529 and become an Androider? I've been using a Nokia N95-3 since Dec 2007.
...
you should just get an iphone.
...
Sigma, was that really necessary?
...
Well he is an employee of
IT&T, so what would you expect? As far as IT&T is concerned the Iphone is the only phone in existence! They evem try to shove it down peoples throats when you call an IT&T store.
...
See what you did, Sig??? I hope your happy...
...
Don't you think that if I was going to get an Iphone from IT&T that I would have 3 frinkin yrs ago?!!?
Can't even tether an Iphone.
I use my phone way too much to have a phone that it's battery is held prisoner!!!
I have spare batteries. And don't give me this crap that my phones battery doesn't last long enough. Suck a battery doesn't yet exist.
I'm not enough of a zombie to own an Iphone from IT&T.
...
Dude...Jay....calm down! Stop being so sensitive 😉 I'm just joking around with you.
...
muah ha ha ha ha ha ha....that was funny
