Does it really "cost" ATT to if a customer wants to change a #?

Jayshmay

Jan 27, 2010, 9:33 PM
I was asking about taking a line from someone else and giving it to another person. And anyway, I was told it would cost me $36 to change a # on my acct. And I said to the rep aren't I allowed to change a number for free once a year? And she said no, and that I'm only "allowed" to change it once every 3 months.

How can ATT !!DICTATE!! to a paying customer how much they can change a # if the customer HAS to $PAY$?

Also this rep told me customer gets charged to change #because it "costs" ATT for me to change a #.

Is that true?!!!? How can a few keystrokes to search for an available # "cost" ATT?

Hopefully somebody who has been working for ATT for a long while will respond.

Rep you had didnt know how to read. 36.00 fee is the charge for a phone number change; there are only a few exceptions; Fee is charged because of caller ID publishing costs, also it is charged as a maintenace cost for provisioning and sending OTA's thru the network. While yes, it is a keystroke, there is a lot that goes on behind the scenes; new VM platform if applicable, etc. You can change the number as many times as you want. That 1 free number change is not true. The only free thing a customer is entitled to a year is a Bill Reprint. However, if there are multiple number changes the account does get flagged for fraud, excessive use and even office of the president if there are several number changes.

What exactly is this "office of the President" stuff about??? What does changing a number frequently have anything to do with the President of the United States?

How long have you been working for ATT (Cingular?)
Cause I've been with ATT (Cingular) for 8yrs and well maybe not anymore, but I do remember being allowed to 1 free # change per yr. Maybe it was back in 04, or 05, but I do rember.

I'm sure had you explained that the person is being harassed, you would have had a better result. It all depends on how you position these things. Give it a few weeks and call back distressed that "Dear old mom is being harassed by telemarketers or heavy breathers or prank callers (whatever) and see how things go. Oh and hope that the previous rep did not note your account too well.

Very funny how you dramatized things "tell'em a heavy breather is calling" ha, ha. I'll keep that in mind. Thanks for the advice.

The contract is up May next year, and the etf is down to $135.

Hmm, interesting suggestion. If I could I would just keep the # the same, and just change the sim card and phone. But I'd be concerned people would be calling if I just gave him the same #.

If I had a Google # wouldn't the ATT # still exist?

at the moment yes.. (once voip becomes bigger who knows). So maybe get a new phone number and then google voice. give out your GV number as primary and then just set it to block numbers you don't want to hear from (you can even give them a personalized VM greeting)

So ? about GV: When you make a call, does gv use your phones internet connection to route the call? That probably kills the battery pretty bad.
...
Menno

Jan 28, 2010, 2:47 AM
currently it uses normal calls. It acts as a call forwarding process.

So basically you dial your GV number, then that number dials the number you want. It's all integrated with Android though so it is a bit more seamless than that.

So Menno, have you seen the headline on PS that Moto is gong to make a whole bunch of Android phones this year? Including one that is going to be sold directly by Google to consumers.

Well, you seem to be very happy with your Droid. Are you? Does it even turn off and restart all of a sudden? Or freeze up? Any problems at all? Hows your Moto working out for you?

I was assuming that my next smartphone might be an HTC Android, but who knows, maybe it'll be a Motorola Android.

I saw the announcement, it will be interesting to see what MOTO develops.

I love my droid. It's never "restarted" on me and it only really slows down if I forget to run the task killer. there are some miner gripes (most of them have work arounds) but it an amazing device, especially if you're like me and you like tinkering.

The just announced that they've overclocked the processor on a rooted droid to 1.3ghz.. while this version is still not quite stable, the 800mhz one apparently runs like a dream... stuff like that is a huge reason why I like this phone.. I'm trying to learn the coding, but it's confusing the heck out of me

Interesting. Maybe it's one of those things that if you don't know, don't mess with it.

Do you spend a lot of time at the android central & talk android websites?

I hope HTC puts out an Android smartphone that has the same exact keyboard the the Touch Pro 2 has, the would be so, so awesome. I'm sure you would agree, that the keyboard on the TP2 is by far the best qwerty out there.

MWC is the middle of next month.

I'm a late night person pretty much all the time. 😎 Seriously.. If I could get a late night job where I actually got to talk to people... I'd be in heaven. I wanna make a coffee shop eventually, open from midnight to noon >.<

I spend a lot of time at android Central.

I like the TP2 keyboard from what I've seen of it, but haven't handled it IRL. I REALLY liked the blackberry Tour keyboard (best I've used)

Office of the President means executive CS reps that work for the CEO office. They normally get "Frequent caller" lists. It does cost the company approx 14.00 for each call to Customer Care. Publishing means your caller ID name is sent out to other carriers they are not published in a directory but they are sent to caller id's with your name and number so people know who is calling. If you are going to cancel over changing a phone number then go and pay the 36.00 activation fee, prorated charges, ETF, and sign with another provider. I dont see why someone would cancel over a phone number change. If you have had the fee waived in the past I would charge it, if not you would get the first one for free but the regular policy is it is a 3...

Since every number we give out has been used at one point in time by someone else, what are the policies for people who are getting harrased, calls from creditors, or other calls that are for someone who previously had the number? Seems like we get 2-3 people a week coming in complaining of this. Will you change the number for free for this reason?

Jan 28, 2010, 2:22 PM
If we process the number change in store, we must provide a reason code. Some codes add the fee, some don't. It's a matter of "which door has the prize" from there.

So AT&T and Verizon together have MORE than have the entire U.S. population (179m). WoW!!!

They need some more competition. It's kinda amazzing that those $40/mo plans that Metro & Cricket haven't garnered more customers.

Well...Page Plus has the best plan. $39.99 Unlimited Talk and Text on VZW network. One can buy a VZW phone at full retail price or buy one of those out dated page plus phones like the LG-VX8300 (best LG ever for Verizon in my humble opinion) or the Motorola E815. You know what consumers would prefer to do? Pay $50 more per month to have a shiny new subsidized handset. There is a sucker born every second apparently.
...
Jayshmay

Jan 28, 2010, 8:34 PM
Yep, appearently!

But we need more competition. For me, competition means speed, speed, speed. I've been going back and forth a bit with another poster that's been telling me about Tmo's HSPA+, he tells me in Philly he gets 6-7mbps.

So hopefully Tmo will bring some of that HSPA+ love to Las Vegas, and a nice Nexus One-like smartphone WITH a slideout keyboard, and
badda-bing they will have me for a customer.

So for me, speed, more so than price is what competion means for me.

Jan 30, 2010, 10:53 AM
No. They will still waive the fee if there is harassment (or if you say there is). I didn't (because there wasn't). My point is that the number change is not free. It generates a fee. The rep can go in and credit it and when I worked there the relocation code did not generate a fee at all.

You also have to keep in mind that this is a business. It doesn't really "cost" AT&T 30.00 to process and order a car charger, but that's what it's sold for. It doesn't "cost" BMW 50,000 dollars to make a car, but that's what it's sold for. (sorry i had to, I know all the regular PS users love the car comparisons)

Personally I'm not dumbfk enough to pay $30 for a frinkin charger! I go to ebay and get one for $7 or less. Same with spare batteries, I just got a new spare for my N95 on ebay for ONLY $3, coming from Hong Kong.

stupid consumers.

First of all I'm smart enough to know that ATT doesn't make cell phone chargers.
So I wouldn't complain to somebody who didn't make it.

Secondly, I'm smart enough that when I go to ebay to look for a charger or battery that says in the description the letters "OEM" which stand for Original Equipment Manufacturer.

And fhnally, I'm smart enough not to go to a greedy wireless store that charges 3x for the same EXACT thing I can buy on ebay for a whole lot less.

When did I say ATT makes chargers?

You could also grow your own tobacco, but isn't it more convenient to just buy it at a gas station? Do you also knit your own clothing?

If you think all chargers on ebay that say "OEM" are actually from the phone's manufacturer, I have an island in the Carribbean I'd like to sell you.

The greedy wireless carrier also gives you a one year warranty on that product. Then again, if you're willing to wait 14-21 business days for your battery to pass through customs twice, you probably don't need it in the first place.

I got a little bit off track, but the point I'm trying to make is that just because you pay for something, that doesn't mean the company is breaking even on your purchase. So anything you incur at ATT, Comcast, Directv, Subway, or those novelty shops with the blacked out windows, they are all making profit.
