Testing shows AT&T 3G network outperforming VZW
AT&T’s mobile data network problems compared to Verizon’s are mainly problems of perception, according to independent testing firm Root Wireless. On most critical performance metrics, AT&T’s 3G networks comes out on top, they say

I have the Droid on Verizon and the Tilt 2 on at&t and at&t is definately faster. I still won't complain to much about Verizon's 3G speeds concidering I have 3G pretty much everywhere.

Personally, i'd rather have 3G everywhere albeit slightly slower, over 3G only in the cities I work and visit that are much faster. I realize it costs more to upg to 3G for GSM/UMTS but its still something I desire.

If the difference you're talking about is download speed, there isn't much difference. EDGE averages 256 kbs. 1xEVDO averages 300-500 kbs. Granted, thats a huge step and a broad spectrum as to what EVDO can hold, but still, I find it asinine that Verizon can compare "3G" coverage when their 3G is 3 times slower than AT&T, and AT&T's EDGE network is almost just as fast as Verizon's 3G network.

True, but how much of that map V is promoting everywhere is Rev.0 and how much is Rev.A (or B)? From what I understand, V considers any EVDO service to be 3G.

All verizon native coverage is EVDO rev A. They spent a TON of money upgrading all their towers. So if you want to know what part is Rev A, look at their prepaid map. The only places that arn't rev a are a couple holdouts from alltel (and Verizon is refitting those towers now, one of the reasons customers in those areas are complaining about coverage atm. towers are being reworked) and the very few areas verizon roams on 3g, they may be Rev0
If you go to their website and look at Vcast coverage, anything listed as Broadband access is Rev A. National Access is Rev0.

AT&T EDGE is capable of over 200 kbps, whereas Verizon's 1XRTT data is capable of 153, real world speeds around 50-100.
Verizon's 2G is slower than AT&Ts.
Verizon's 3G is slower than AT&Ts.
Falling back on EDGE really isn't that bad. You still get decent speeds.

Then why did ATT spend so many years making 3g=Data? They are the one's who did this to themselves. If they advertised anything other than their 3g, verizon's ads wouldn't be that big of a deal.

I wish EDGE was everywhere. Then I wouldn't get so many dropped calls, and my phone wouldn't spend so much time searching and no service.

Yeah, too bad AT&T coverage isn't everywhere like Verizon--garbled, unintelligible conversations are FAR better than none at all.

no, that is the retail cost. the only way that price will drop is if the technology becomes obsolete or if carriers stop offering subsidized prices on the phone. No commitment prices are set largely by the phone producers, not carriers.
