AT&T 3G is a joke

First of all I have had AT&T for over 5 years and I have loved their coverage here in northern Indiana. 2 months ago I decided to go with the Bold mainly because of the 3G. For the past 2 months I have been very disapointed with the internet. It runs VERY slow and I now drop calls. I didn't have this problem before. I just called and cancelled my data plan last night hoping that will help with my dropped calls because I heard that AT&T will drop you from 3G if you don't have a data plan and low and behold as of today my phone now says Edge, so all the rumors were true and here at work it has dropped to GSM. What the heck is going on????????? I am thinking I made a mistake sticking with AT&T. Does anyone have any oppinions as to what I can do...

ATT's network is being over loaded by so many iPhone 3g and 3gs owners. This is why ATT 3g network sucks. But Ive heard from different sources that ATT is "fixing" this issue. As of now i suggest finding another carrier if 3G is a big issue for you because it will be awhile before this is actually done. I personally had ATT and service was great, but I need a reliable 3G network so I went to Verizon and been happy since. take advantage of 30day trials! its for your GOOD! GOOD LUCK!

What the difference between 3G Iphones using too much data, and ANY other 3G device using too much data, and don't give me this "it's a smartphone crap" cause guess what people it's the web browser that renders webpages, and Phone Scoop looks precisely the same on my 3G Nokia N95-3 as it does on an Iphone, so please, please tell me how it is a Iphone 3G uses so, so much data than ANY other 3G phone? In a way that makes sense preferably, not what ATT tells you to tell customers.

Its not the amount of data that an iphone uses. There are more iPhone 3g users out there then regular 3g phone users. And also more data traffic with the iPhone itself.(which means the majority of iphone users use there phones more often then regular 3g users)that is whats causing all the problems on ATT network. But they say that they are fixing the issue by switching over to another frequency. So we will wait and see. They just added 792,000 new iphone subscribers. This is really taking a Toll on there network.

I understand what your saying, Iphone users browse the web a whole lot. I use a Nokia N95-3, and last billing cycle I think I used around 900mb's, is that considered a lot? Compared to Iphone users.

That are constantly "on" like GPS or the apps that keep checking with the network every 5, 10, or 15 mins to update status/location etc.
Also, phonescoop may look the same on your N95 compared to the iPhone, but since the iPhone has such a large screen, it's going to take more Kbs to fill/load it all up.
The iPhone has been considered to be "very chatty" with AT&T's network due it many apps that keep sending and requesting data while not really being used.

Example: I have a Bold, and while I use GPS (I don't pay for it, I use Google maps which works just fine for me) I've noticed that if I'm using the app, and I switch to another menu option (without closing google maps) it'll keep running, even if Im sending an email, or talking on ...

I been with AT&T for about... a month or so now.. and I really like AT&T 3G. It's really reliable in my area. 3G everywhere. I guess its the place your at. my connection speeds are fast up to 2mbps. I tried out verizon, there cool but i dont like CDMA phones.. GSM is the way to go. and you cant do simultaneous data/voice.

I have a friend that does tower maintence. and he fixes, repairs, and builds cell towers and he said AT&T is upgrading there tower to 850MHz and there building more towers, just takes time.

But to better help you.. he says AT&T and verizon really keep there towers up to shape and really well maintenced.

If you work in a store of any carrier, you always hear when another carrier's towers go down.

The towers around here overload/shut down every few weeks for ATT (but they also have a local carrier and Tmobile roaming off of them). We hear about it everytime (I work for Verizon)

Oh, I really wish 7pm nt minutes were standard and not extra. I pay $16/mo for 7pm nt minutes on a family plan, my damn wireless bill is almost up to frinkin $160/mo, 3 lines, anyway, I'm not too enthused about $160/mo.

Yeah.. we get a lot of people who complain about the 9pm nights start.. but when you can double your minutes for $20 it tends to quiet most of those objections.

Cellphones do get pretty crazy.. With those nights and weekends.. you don't have a landline right? We've had a lot of people cancel their homephone to save themselves money.

Nope, no landline, all wireless for 7.5yrs, and my beloved N95-3 is in my hand a whole lot more than it is in my case.

That's the way to go.. my new landlord looks at me like I am crazy when i tell him I'm not interested in buying a landline. I have the EnV2 right now, but I'm prolly gonna get a blackberry (tour or storm) in september, unless I get my wish and we get an HTC android device for verizon by then.

What about the Omnia 2? That handset looks like it has some pretty kick-acc specs.

I messed around with the first omnia.. it was ok, but their version of Windows really isn't finger friendly, and the sylus doggle thing just confused me (plus, the Versa apparently had a faster processor).

The only WINMO phones that really interested me were the HTC ones because of Touchflo. Who knows, I'll have to wait to see what the phone actually looks like in hand.

I REALLY want an android device though, because most of my stuff on my computer runs with google now (mail, calendar, etc). But if it looks like one of those phones won't launch for awhile, I'll go with a blackberry.

storm2 looks nice, but rumors point that release date sometime in november. We'll see. My env2 is starting to act up. That and I'm carrying an ipo...

Oh, cause people think your Ipod Touch is an Iphone and you work at a Vrzn store, that's kinda funny.

I haven't heard a lot of detail about the Storm 2, what exactly have you heard?

Jul 24, 2009, 7:00 PM
Yeah, it can be funny, esp when people don't believe me when I say it's not a phone.

Same basic profile. a little lighter, slimmer, but same basic design. Still "sure press" but with a signifigantly improved screen (apparently screen doesn't move until device is powered on). Wifi, and *crosses fingers* OS 5.0.

There was a leak of 5.0 for the Storm today. While most functions don't work quite right, it speeds up the UI more than I thought possible, and adds some nifty eye candy to screen transitions, etc. If the storm2/1 is released with 5.0, it's like a whole new phone.

The running joke with our tech reps is that they are calling the storm2 (internally) the Blackberry Mulligan.

A mulligan, in a game, happens when a player gets a second chance to perform a certain move or action. The practice is also sometimes referred to as a "do over."[1]

Verizon has just as many outages as AT&T. Verizon has less outages than AT&T. Verizon has more outages than AT&T. Both carriers are publically traded, and they both recommend using a low-fat creamcheese on your bagels so you don't get fat.

This is wrong. AT&T always has a network outage. Something is usually wrong with the network. Tell me about all the iPhone customers that couldn't receive voice mail for over 2 weeks and AT&T didn't say anything about it until later? If something goes wrong with Verizon's network, it won't be down longer then 4 hours, and if it is, we will bring a COW out.

Oh here we go with Mr Broken Record again. Your boyfriend Sgt_Joker has been filling in for you with his fan boy ravings in your absence. I'm sure all the people who wanted to be part of the fad knows as the iphone expected to have some problems as most devices that are overhyped like that often do. All I know is me and my dumbphone never experienced an outage of any kind, voicemail or otherwise. As hard as it may be for you to believe, many of us are happy with our network.

The original post was like a trumpet call for all the verizon crazies to swoop in like vultures. There's only three possible solutions to this easy question. Either wait for 3G to become more stable in your area, or move someplace where 3G is stronger, or switch to another carrier who may have a better 3G footprint in their area. Sitting around and complaining about it on a forum however will accomplish nothing.

I called CS yesterday and talked to them about it and they actually admitted that when you have a data plan they bump up your signal to the strongest tower, so when I dropped my data plan they bumped me down. I told them I wasn't happy with that decision and that I would like to reverse my upgrade and return the phone but she told me that I was 2 weeks past the 30 days and that there was nothing she could do. I guess that is how they treat a loyal long time customer?

I have the Motorola Q9h. I have a hack on it that forces 3G no matter what. Occasionally, my 3G bars drop to 2 bars but usually I have 4 to 5 bars and it is always 3G. Also, I never drop calls no matter where I go, Northeast.
