"As a valued customer.."

"..we can offer you an upgrade with a new 2-yr commitment and waive the $18 upgrade fee."

I have not been seriously considering getting a new phone with AT&T, mostly because I just got my last upgrade within the year. Just out of curiosity I dialed *639# to check when I would be eligible for upgrade and got the above text msg. I just upgraded my phone in October of 2008 so its only been about 9 months.

Why would I already be eligible when I renewed my agreement for 2 years only 9 months ago. Is there a mistake, or does AT&T really allow you to upgrade earlier then a full year into contract?

Early upgrade maybe. I know with sprint we do it all the time for our customers ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Right, but as early as 9 months?

I could see them possibly making an exception for someone and allowing them to upgrade early if requested. But I just requested the info.

Pretty cool on AT&T's part if this isn't a mistake.

depending on what store you go to they process early upgrades with a 75$ or 100$ fee. the type of upgrade they are allowing you is a standard upgrade

actually it depends on what you pay a month and your payment history.

I just got off the phone with AT&T customer service. Apparently, this $18 upgrade fee exists for for regular upgrades, not just early.

He did say depending on your account, it can sometimes be waived..which makes sense in my situation.

This is a standard fee when you do a phone upgrade.

It can be waived, based on your FAN (corporate) discounting, but this is pretty rare, actually.

What's to stop a customer from getting an unlocked phone and swapping the SIM?

They've always been sneaky about this, and it in my opinion is shifting the cost of the phone around to lower the price.

Not exactly ethical.

Upgrades are based on several different things. The biggest factor is how much you pay for your line each month. If you have a high revenue, you will become eligible for upgrade faster. A lot of people misunderstand this when they sign several lines on the same day in a family plan. The primary will become eligible for upgrade sooner because it has a primary charge and usually will have some feature causing it to pay even more than the other lines.

I believe I'm paying $80 for my line (1400 minutes) with 4 secondary line (9.99 each), plus $30 for unl texting, 30 for internet and 10-15(?) for intenet on a nonsmart phone.

So the primary line is paying $140.00 a month where as the secondary line is paying $9.99 to 24.99 a month. That is why your line became eligible to upgrade so soon. The revenue is pretty high. You obviously don't have to upgrade if you don't want to. The longer you wait to upgrade, the greater the incentive will be. You may get and incentive of an additional $50.00 off any device but the iphone. The incentive will go as high as $100.00 off any device except the iphone. I say just hold on to the upgrade eligibility.

I actually read that on this site from someone. If you dial that number, a text message comes back with your upgrade date.

This is a mistake on at&t's end in your favor. ๐Ÿ˜ The earliest you would be eligible for an upgrade is 12 months, and that's if your phone line (not your entire account, just one line) has at least $100 a month charged to it.) Early upgrades are only associated with the iphone. If you upgrade before your eligible with ANY other phone it's called an "exception upgrade" which is standard two year pricing, + $75.
