Dropped Verizon 2 weeks ago after deciding I loved the Bold and AT&T seemed to be much better with the coverage. The irony is that the day after the 30 day trial, I started dropping calls. During the 30 day trial I maybe dropped 3 calls, this is acceptable. However, in the last 4 days, I dropped at least 10 calls and had dinner at a friends tonight where my service was the only one that DID NOT work. They had Verizon and T-Mobile.
I actually really like Verizon's service, but they cripple thier phones and do not have anything nearly as good as the Bold. Am I just having an unlucky couple days? I will pay the fee and drop AT&T fast if this is going to continue.
...
Do you have zip codes for the areas your using them in? It's off for it to work for 30 days then stop. And especially odd if T-Mobile is working there and AT&T is not. Perhaps there is a network outage, it's not common but it's possible.
...
Call in to AT&T. If you get a customer care rep let them pull up your coverage information. DO NOT CALL ON THE DEVICE. If they have to reset activation it will disconnect the call. They will more than likely transfer to tech...dont say you cant make or receive calls.. tell them you are experiencing dropped calls. If the coverage is GREAT in your area they will transfer to tech who will look up your LRN and check to see if you may need your activation reset. I assume you ported your number in as well?
...
What is "ported" my number?
...
The phone number you had with VZW.
Or did you just leave that number and let ATT give you a new phone number?
...
I took the number from Verizon.
...
I was reading your blog "Horizon for Verizon", and you said you had AT&T and Verizon at the same time.
...
Yeah, so. I had both for two weeks while trying AT&T the I dropped VZW
...
So how did you have the same number on two services at the same time?
...
What is your reason for these questions? I didn'thave the same number. For two weeks I had a second number from at&t, when I dropped vzw, I took the number to at& and the bold.
...
o well. They told you not to switch because of what would happen, but you thought they were lieing to you. Have fun with 2 years of crap.
...
Who is "they" what the hell are you talking about? I was asking a question, if you don't have an answer, mind your business and stop wastin my time.
...
it looks like they were tealling you about there call quality and dropped calls, not trying to be rude man. Do you miss Verizon? I know you want WiFi. Verizon knows that people do, thats why all the PDAs they have had do have WiFi IF the phone maker add it on there. Verizon doesnt request it to be off anymore. It's not Verizon that wont put WiFi on the CDMA Bold, its RIM. I hope you understand that.
...
Are you a Verizon employee? Why do you care so much??? Verizon's PDAs are OK...it'd be nice to see the latest treo or something.
Actually I don't miss Verizon at all. I've only had one consistant dropped call spot and AT&T works several places that Verizon did not. Not to mention the Blackberry Bold is an excellent device with WiFi and not having Wifi is an option to me.
...
Well i can tell you as an independant agent that your new bold also has a year warranty on it as well. If resetting the activation that was previously stated doesnt work then i would contact the warranty department so they can get you a replacement bold. If you have any problems you can reply back and i can give you an email where i can help you more ๐
...
I will not switch back to Verizon...AT&T actually works in many places that VZW does not and They have crap for PDA and or Blackberrys. The greatest Blackberry out is the Bold and Verizon is getting a simliar model, but there is NO WiFi. Not having WiFi is NOT an option for me nor for many business users. Are the people at Verizon morons? I predict Verizon will lose more and more and more customers in the future thus feeding money into their infrustructue.
...
Just want to give you an update.
Since I unlocked my BB Bold, it is spectacular. I have almost no dropped calls...at least no more than Verizon and the phone is great.
All the VZW reps...thanks for your BS and your wishfull thinking that I'd be back, but it's been over 3 months and I have no complaints.
...
I just came back to ATT from VZW as well. The free BB Bold got me.
But what's unlocking the bold suppose to do?
...
Because when it switches from 3g to Edge or whatever service, it drops the call. You have to be able to turn off 3g. With the Iphone 3g, you can turn it off. But with the BB Bold, you can't for some reason AT&T disable the switch capabilities.
You may be in an area that it does not have to switch back and forth, but I'm in Los Angeles and 3g is not everywhere so when it loses 3g, it drops the call. 3g is not much faster than the other network anyway and its a pain if it drops the calls.
...
Who cares. You still have one of the worse networks in the US. I know more about the cell phone networks then you do, trust me. I had AT&T for 15 years.
...
Well, it's been over 6 months and most of the Verizon reps here on Phonescoop said I'd be back to Verizon by now. Guess what NOT A CHANCE!!! I think Verizon went out twice this week in Los Angeles.
Anyway, AT&T is fine, service is great...dropped 0 calls the past two weeks. The phones are sooooo much better than VZW..."we test them...that's why it takes so long" SEE YA VZW.
Just wanted to give an update and let the Verizon reps know, I couldn't be happier with my decision to leave.
...
Oh well. I could care less. I have 48 of AT&T's Bold users wating to port over to the Tour this comming week. And I just checked to see about outages in LA area, and we have had 0. Nice try tho.
๐คฃ
...
WOW! I'm sure that'll take a bite out of the thousands leaving Verizon to get the new Iphone. Just keep testing away......................................... ......................

MennoJul 10, 2009, 3:58 PM
Considering Verizon ends every quarter with net adds, and several iphone users maintain a VZW phone as a backup for when their toy stops working, it's a non-issue.
...
I have the BB Bold...not just a tou and works great!
No dropping calls. I see Verizon is releasing a Blackberry similar to the Bold except I don't see WiFi in the specs? Is this true? If so, why the heck would they leave WiFi out of it???
...
MennoJul 12, 2009, 10:55 AM
Because they don't offer for-profit wifi hotspots like ATT does? ATT has wifi hotspots all over the country that people can pay to connect their computers/data devices to. They allow you to connect for free if you have their data plan on your phone, and this is one of the selling points of the wifi on their phones (cause typically they do not have 3g where they offer the wifi).
Verizon does not offer wifi hotspots, and thus do not include wifi on their phones.
Rest assured though, the next version of the Tour (as well as other blackberries launched) will more than likely have wifi. You can read about it on the front page of this site.
And I'm happy you don't have dropped calls now. But how many months did you go with them?
...
It's not Verizon. When RIM would test a CDMA BB with WiFi, there was always problems with the radio picking up the service. Now, they have finally fixed the problem. They didn't have time to add it to the Tour, but the Storm 2 and next Tour will have WiFi plus any other smart phone released with Verizon.
Notice how the new HTC Ozone (Snap on Sprint) has WiFi, but the Snap on Sprint doesn't? Ours also has GSM Roaming and is 100.00 cheaper.
...
Well, it's almost a year since I left Verizon and I can say I'm STILL SO HAPPPPPPPYYYYYYY. AT&T is great and I never looked back.
Verizon Reps; happy new year and hope you have a back up plan...LOL.
AT&T service is great and the customer service is excellent... LOVE IT and no regrets.

You are still just as immature as before. ๐คฃ Grow up little boy. AT&T is not doing to well right now.

Verizon is in trouble...AGAIN...isn't the FAA wondering why the morons at VZW doubled their early termination fee??? They did it because of GREED and people are leaving by massive numbers...LOL...LOL...LOL
...
You are 12 arn't you?
And no, Verizon isn't in trouble. The FCC can't do anything of it anyway. And, Verizons ETF is only for Smartphones and BlackBerrys. Verizon has the lowest prices on phones as it is.
And Massive numbers? Not at all. Verizon has over 90 million customers. Verizons has never dropped in numbers you idiot.
Grow up, You are suppose to be in school. And Verizon could care less if you left. One less idiot on our network.

I would have no problems leaving AT&T if this problem persists and Verizon gets their had out of their asses by coming out with a great phone that is NOT crippled. Will this phone have WiFi, stand alone GPS???
...
MennoMar 12, 2009, 2:58 PM
All current blackberries and WM smartphones have standalone GPS, the Omnia has Wifi.
Verizon does not "block" wifi on their phones, they simply do not offer phones with wifi since they don't have wifi (Hotspots) like ATT and Tmobile to make wifi profitable. That being said, more devices will have wifi since it is something people seem to want (even if not needed for any verizon services) so a BB or at least more smartphones with WiFi is on the horizon. I would like you to please show me a Verizon phone that included wifi but it was "blocked" by verizon. If this were the case, there would be programs to Jailbreak the wifi. These programs do not exist, because if a phone has wifi, you can use it.
...
I just looked into it!!! It does NOT have WiFi. Are the people at Verizon morons? We need WiF in a super phone like that. I guess I will be tolerating some dropped calls. Hope it does not get worse.

Why do you need wifi? How many areas are you working in where you cannot get Verizon's Rev-A network? Are you downloading HD movies to your phone so the speed difference is really that noticable? The new RevA phones are Very Fast when it comes to the internet. Why is Wifi a "requirement" besides for things like International VOIP (and verizon offers both international phones and phones running WM that have WiFi to cover this)
...
Are you kidding??? We need WiFi. If service cuts out and you are near an access point...hotels...you are on the phone and want to use the internet. I can't believe you would even ask that. Yes, we need wifi. Verizon is just plain retarded when it comes to their devices and what to leave alone. They just RECENTLY freed the GPS in the Omnia and othe phones because people are leaving them. F

How often to you lose service with your verizon phone though? Wifi is great if there are a ton of low service areas, but those are increasingly becoming few and fare between.
Verizon does not offer wifi hotspots at airports like ATT does, so they don't have any reason to include a feature that would increase the price of the phone.
Yes, it is a very nice feature, but it is not something that is required. Verizon is including it in new phones because people think they need it, and it's one of the features that will pull people to smartphones (for whatever reason) ATT and Tmobile offer it because there were and still are a ton of areas where their 3G service was lacking. They also pushed hotspots where people with wifi in their comput...

I had verizon before I had AT&T and it was horrible service. Its all about location and what service has the best coverage in your area and in my area AT&T and Sprint have the best.
...
I had AT&T when it was AT&T Wireless, then Cingular, then AT&T again, and AT&T turned the old Cingular into CRAP. I liked the old CEO of Cingular, the new CEO is crap. Ratings went wayyyy down in AT&T, and you know that.
...
Yeah some things get lost in a consolidation when Cingular bought AT&T I will admit some good things were lost.. Cingular had more freedom because they havent had as many lawsuits against them.. once a company has lawsuits they seem to tighten up on a lot things. FSLA being one of them. And ergonomics... it takes just one person to sue and the rest have to be taught what common sense should provide.
Customer wise...at least AT&T let ya keep your America's choice plans...but you have to buy unlocked phones to use Blue sim in them. Network integration for any consolidation there is going to be huge hiccups and loss of coverage as well...roaming agreements lost etc. I just wish every company would quit advertising their "great coverag...

The OP stated in their verizon thread that they had great service with verizon and didn't have many deadzones. This means that, more often than not, they would be near EVDO-RevA range or inside of it.
The reason they left is that they were dead set on getting a blackberry with wifi, no matter what.
Now they are having dropped calls issues, so coverage would seem to be better for Verizon where they use the phone.

I had the Omnia on day one with GPS working perfectly fine.
WiFi on a cell is used to fill in gaps. T-Mobile was the biggest to use WiFi, mostly because they had no 3G data network to speak of until middle of last year. AT&T in many areas took two years to roll out their 3.5G. Verizon switched on most of their 3.5G stuff over the course of eight months. Why get a device with a gap-filling technology when you can just get a device that works?
Part of my job involves going to buildings and testing signal quality. I rarely have an instance where I can't get any signal, and that's usually because I'm in an RF-intensive area such as a server room or power and utility areas. In those areas, no carrier is king.

A similar phone for Verizon will be out soon. As far as dropped calls, I drop a decent amount on my Bold as well but not more than any other smart phone.

The phone that's coming out on Verizon is the Niagara, right? It does not have WiFi which is a deal killer. Need WiFi.

Why do you need Wi-Fi?

I have it on my Bold and NEVER use it.

You are just like everyone els. There is NOT a huge diffrence between Verizons EVDO Rev A and WiFi. WiFi may be a tiny bit faster, but not much to notice a diffrence. Rev A has just started in 08 to come out on phones and PDAs. There is a big diffrence between Rev 0 and Rev A.
Next, There is NOT a CDMA BB with WiFi on any CDMA network.
...
Really? There isn't a huge difference between EVDO Rev A and WiFi? Are you serious? You don't consider a service about 10X faster a "huge difference"? (correct me if I'm wrong, but EVDO Rev A maxes out around 1.4 mb/s, and most WiFi hotspots average speeds around 10 mb/s, at least the ones I have used).
...
When your on your phone, you can't tell a major diffrence. On a PC/Mac, you can.
...
MennoMar 12, 2009, 5:46 PM
Right, and any computer made in the last 3-4 years comes with it's own wifi reciever so you can access your hotel networks that way. Tethering is there for when you don't have access to wifi hotspots for your laptop. In fact, you can get a wifi receiver for your laptop for a pretty cheap price if your computer doesn't come with one.
I don't get it... are you saying you tether your phone to your laptop to get wifi?
Yes, you can tell a difference in speed on a laptop, but this is not for a laptop, we are talking about the phone.
...
Actually I can tell quite a difference. In both my Tilt and my iPhone I can tell a major difference on streaming videos and while not as big, a still substantial difference in surfing the web. Even when using the Opera Mini browser on my Tilt, I can tell a major difference between surfing web pages on ATT's 3g and Wifi. Oh, and before you go off on a tangent about how Verizon's 3g is so much faster than ATT's, when I speed test both my Tilt and iPhone, they regularly clock out between 700 - 1100 kb/s in the areas I am in - pretty comparable speeds to Verizon's EVDO Rev A.
...
MennoMar 12, 2009, 6:10 PM
Where revA becomes superior is in upload speeds. Download is pretty similar.
...
lol, I don't even bother with trying to upload things from my cell phones. Just take it home, synch it the computer and do it that way.
...
MennoMar 12, 2009, 6:44 PM
upload changes how your phone requests information as well.
Latency is the amount of time it takes for your computer to inquire for data from a server and then for that server to communicate with your computer that the request was received. Download speeds are only for stuff coming into the phone.
When you want to go to espn.com, your computer pings the server that it is on and requests to download that information. Espn.com then sends you authentication allowing you to download the information. If your upload speed is faster you'll be able to start downloading the data faster.
This is why Cable and DSL internet is faster than Satellite for getting information (you only really notice it in games and streaming data) even though on...

How do you know? You don't use one. I can tell the difference. I personally don't choose to use it but that is a personal preference.
And as you said in a previous post, "thats what everyone says". If EVERYONE wants WiFi there must be a reason. You generalize so much that it just came back to bite you in the behind.
Amazing.
...
right, and you think Verizon can say put WiFi in every phone? Nope. And RIM doesnt make a CDMA BB with WiFi and you know that.
And that just came back around to bite you for opeing your mouth. Amazing huh?
...
Ok, I had to read this several times to see if your backwards, back woods logic actually had a relevant point to the statement of "Rev A is as fast as Wi-Fi".
RIM does not make a CDMA phone with Wi-Fi because Verizon does not want them to include Wi-Fi, Sprint does not want Wi-Fi and Alltel wasn't big enough to demand Wi-Fi even if they wanted it to be included.
Just because Verizon makes a choice to not support Wi-Fi does not mean Rev A is faster.
If you have a brain please use it now.
...
No, RIM does not make a WiFi CDMA BB. Do you see Canada's CDMA network with a WiFi BB? No. And Alltel was big enough for WiFi phones. They have WiFi hotspots, go look at there Data packs.
...
I read that the 8230 Flip Pearl will have Wi-Fi.
...
We have no idea if it will or not. If it does, it will be the FIRST CDMA BB with WiFi. Its RIMs choice to put WiFi in a phone or not. But, they are saying it will. We still don't have any idea if this new Bold will have WiFi. you never know 100% until it come out.
...
I read that the 8230 will and the 9630 will not. I know it is ultimately up to RIM whether to offer the Wi-Fi in CDMA devices, but I wish that Verizon would lean on them about it. For a customer to because the device lacks Wi-Fi is hard to accept.

We are not talking about laptops, we are talking about on a cellphone with a 3 inch screen. You're not going to notice some huge difference between RevA and wifi on cellphone for most applications.
...
It all depends on what you are doing. If you are streaming video - yes, you will see a huge difference. If you are surfing the web it depends - if you are visiting sites like CNN or ESPN that have sites specifically built for smartphones that are compressed down, no you won't see a noticeable difference. But if you are surfing the web and going to sites that don't have smartphone versions available, you will see a huge difference in load times.
...
MennoMar 12, 2009, 6:07 PM
With RevA there isn't a huge difference for even random "non smartphone" websites. With Rev0 there was noticeable difference.
My manager has the storm, I have an Ipod touch to access the wifi here. During streaming videos and looking up sites they have very similar load times. I can download music faster, but not by much.

dropping 3 calls in 30 days to me even seems unacceptable. I have not dropped one call in the last 3 years with verizon, NOT ONE.
I would reccomend that you call at&t, NOT FROM THE PHONE, tell them you are dropping a ton of calls. they will troubleshoot and try to fix it, if they cannot fix it ask that they let you out of your contract if you return your equipment, if they cant provide you a reliable service and they cant fix it, they MAY waive the ETF. if not you can sell your bold for $350 and pay the etf.

WOW! I just don't see it. I've heard about the drop calls and poor service, but where I'm at, everyone that has AT&T loves it. I'm glad I decided not to listen to people in these forums, because if I had, I would've robbed myself of the oppurtunity of having a GREAT device (iphone 3GS). I too had verizon for years, I see absolutely no difference in service where I'm at. I would suggest that you talk to people where you're at versus making a decision based on forums from people all over the country.

I was also a long time VZW customer that switched over and got an iPhone 3GS. I live in the Dallas area and you can get pretty much any carrier here and have good coverage, however I know that if I go to the boonies I will probably not have as good of a coverage on the AT&T network as I would with VZW. That being said, I generally do not go out into the boonies and yes the iPhone works much better than I thought it would and it works so much better than the OMNIA that I had that I'm thinking of starting a petition to make it illegal to call the OMNIA a "smartphone".
