Interested in switching to cingular

I am currently with ATTWS and might be interested in switching to cingular. I live on log island, ny but currently go to shcool in Buffalo, NY. I am not sure which carrier to switch to. I am in favor of the GSM over Verizon and Sprint. Is GSM better than cdma? Also cingular or tmobile. One more thing...cna someone please commnet on cingular as a whole (ie phones, reception, cust service, etc.)
thanks

In regards to Cingular's GSM service...stay away. Their TDMA service is far superior right now...and it covers alot more of the country. As for GSM being superior to CDMA...that's just not true. Verizon's network is leaps and bounds better than Cingular's. But if you're planning on going with Cingular, my advice to you would be to buy a TDMA phone...and don't let the Cingular store reps tell you differently. Cingular's TDMA network will be running along side their GSM network for at least a couple of more years.

Now i don't know about all of this statement.... because we just started pushing out our GSM in September, and we still offer TDMA, but i wouldn't sell it to a customer. Because we have tons of dropped calls, and loss of coverage on our TDMA. I'm in central texas and travel pretty much all over, and i have a GSM phone now, becuase there are far more areas that i didn't have coverage before that now i have coverage.... so if you are going to get Cingular, i would go with the GSM, because there's a lot of places the TDMA won't work anymore... even though they said it will work side by side, i don't believe that... we were stated, that by the end of 2004 our GSM will be pretty much the same as TDMA service...... i'm not saying that's going t...

I, also, disagree with the TDMA recommendation. Which tech to choose depends on how far along the network conversion is in your area. Here in Massachusetts, for instance, where I have been using GSM quite happily for several months now, all out new tower sites are GSM only, and we are no longer allowed to sell new TDMA activations or upgrades.

So listen to your Cingular rep. Check the coverage map for both TDMA and GSM (purple and green, respectively, on the dealer-accessible website. Then make a decision based on your local area.

Nationwide, GSM coverage is increasing at an astounding rate. Last August, we had what I called a "spiderweb" map -- a thin network stretched across the continent. Now, while not universal, the pictured...

You know...perhaps I should have stated that my customers (I'm the wireless manager at a electronics retailer) in South Florida complain incessantly about their conversion to GSM and how it's crap down here. I guess it's where you are, right?

we are suppose to get updated coverage maps, and hopefully some extra features.. i have heard of nationwide mobile 2 mobile floating around. which would be wonderful, but my rep said he couldn't say for sure what exactly if anything besides the updated coverage area that we were getting... i hope it increases in the north west more than it is now.....

I've heard that the $9.99 extra line will become $19.99 again. I can't see doing this without giving the customer something for the extra money. Nationwide mobile-to-mobile would be a very tasty addition.

[Please note -- this is pure speculation. I do not have insider info.]

I agree on them giving them something tasteful for it, however, customers hated the 19.99 extra lines. Every since we went to 9.99 i have sold more family plans than you can imagine. However, if they do the 19.99 it would be wonderful to have nationwide cingular to cingular, unlimited nights and weekends with it.

I did indeed.

I like the $9.99 as well, and they are a large percentage of my sales.

Part of my thinking about the nationwide mobile-to-mobile theory is that anything less will make $19.99 a much harder sell.

The ONLY objection I get on family talk is that "pay extra for m2m" thing. If I have to charge more on top of that, I'm hosed.

yeah i agree with you there.... i hate telling customers that they have to pay extra PER PERSON to get certain things.. however, i was talking to one of the sprint sales man, and they just add the money into their rate plans already and dont' tell the customer, and tell them they are getting it free.... seems kind of cheesy to me..

like the new 7 pm nights and and weekend.. we charge 7 dollars for it.... sprint acutally charges 5 dollars for it, and doesn't tell you....

but we shall see what happens, our rate plans have never really gotten worse, so i'm not worried about that, just worried that Cingular is going to raise prices on extra features.....

Maybe they'll get rid of that stupid Upgrade fee?? that would be nice

My experience has been that charging ANYthing more down here in South Florida won't get you anywhere...lol. People down here are extremely cheap. Why change something that's been so successful anyway, right (that means they'll change it)?

I have both T-Mobile and Cingular here in Orlando. I'm on the Nokia 6340i GAIT phone and it works just fine. Both services work real good, but I've had issues with Cingular. I'm actually from Tampa and I go to school out here in Orlando, but my girlfriend lives back in Tampa. She has Cingular, so I got it as well so we could have the mobile to mobile minutes. I had to learn the hard way that they don't work unless your in the same area, unlike T-Mobile. Coverage is good, but you have to pay more for the same features that are included in with T-Mobile. Customer Service is excellent with both (for me at least). For all you Cingular Customer Service reps, you have always been helpful so thanks 😁 .

I do have one question though, doe...

I do have one question though, does Cingular extend your contract if you change your plan through 611?

(Keeping in mind that I do not sell in the Florida market, and things may be different there)

Here in the Northeast, no new contract is requested if you change your plan in the first half of your current contract (first six months of a 1-year, first year of a 2-year).

After that, you are asked to agree to a 1-year contract from the date of the change request. (Even though the plan change usually does not start until the next billing cycle.) This overrides any existing time -- you are not adding a year on to the end of your contract.

Dates for equipment upgrades are not affected by ...

awesome...but I've got one more question. My best friend has cingular and he wants out. His phone got busted so now he wants a new one with a new service. So he called up cingular and they told him that he had to pay something like a $250 cancellation fee. From what I understand, the early termination fee is prorated until the end of the contract. So I'm not sure which to beleive, what do you think? 😕

Most places, we have a $150 ET fee, that is not pro-rated.

In a few places (FL is one, according to the contract I just checked), there is a $240 pro-rated fee. If your friend is in FL, then the fee should be less -- much less if he is near the end of his agreement, only a little less if he just started.

With a $240 fee, pro-rated over 24 months, it works out to $10 per month.. if he truly does not want the service, it is still cheaper than any play-through deal I could suggest.

If he does not mind the service, he can pick up a phone,...
