Unlocked Phones???

I hear much about unlocked phones, but is really a good thing? I understand you do not get the discount for signing a contract, and they cost more to buy, That aside, Are they really better, or do network dependant features not work? and make them not worth getting?

It depends, Sometimes if you get a overseas phone they have way better features and options on there phones, such as better camera, music players, that sort of thing. With alot of unlocked phones from other carriers you might have issues with accessing media net and such, but most of them work.

I might actually get an unlocked phone as my next phone. If you get one, i'd get a quad-band just to give you more flexibility. However, at&t is supporting a new technology called UTMS, which you might not find on all unlocked phones.
Also, you'll need to probably enter some settings into the phone if you get it elsewhere, but if you call at&t, they should help you out.
One of my friends got an unlocked phone, and he was having some difficulties with it until he called at&t up.
But if you want to save money, just get a phone from at&t. After the return period, they'll usually be willing to unlock it for you. I had them unlock my razr last may. I just told them that I was going on a trip overseas and the trip-organizer was providing SIM c...

??????? is there any features or programs that are on the phones, that come active when you unlock them? I know the Black berrys used to have black berry maps on them, now they come with telanav, but do they disable features like verizon? What is UMTS ?

UMTS is just like a new standard for phone technology. It seems to be where AT&T is moving.

At least with my razr, I didn't notice anything different once I had it unlocked. Though, when I was using a foreign sim, more options would show up under networks; I could select any available GSM network I wanted to connect to.
