I recently purchased the cingular 8525 and would like to use it as a modem for my laptop. I have recieved the instructions from cingular on how to do so, but its not very good at explaining how to do it. Is anyone well versed in this area that could help me? Firstly it says to make sure that under the phone settings that wireless is turned on. is this wireless LAN or what? The first person at cingular that I talked to said I would have to download cingular communication manager. so I did only to find out that the 8525 is not compatible with comm manager. I need help!!!!!

yes the wireless is the wireless lan. also your gonna need a teather cable to connect your phone to the laptop. once you connect the teather cable it should walk you through everything.

The cable came with the phone. Does active sync have to be disabled? or will it automatically be disabled.

is it the active sync cable or a teathering cable because they r diffrent. the teathering cable allows more info to flow through the cable at a higher speed.

I have an 8525 - and the sales rep told me I had to pay the $79 laptop connect in order to use it that way. I did, and it worked great- but how do they know??? PDA Connect is only $39....

ya well thats what us reps r trained to tell you to make more money off of ya. technically you should be able to get away with just the unlimited data for 39.99 but sometimes if customer service checks ur account and sees you downloading data at a high rate of speed sometimes they will try and get you to change it. it will work with justh the unlimited data and you dont need the laptop connect. plus the laptop connect is only 59.99 in special right now

I should be able to use mine today as a modem (which the tether cord is at home) and it should work if I have unlimited data, without the tether add on? Obviously I wouldn't use it to download music or anything lol, but you get the idea, and it should work?

If you do it then Cingular has the right to cancel your account and charge you the ETF. If you really want to do it, just change your plan to the 59.99 data connect. It's worth the extra $20.

When tethering an 8525/8925 using the internet sharing option, it will record your data usage and AT&T will know. Using the Communications Manager for other phones does the same thing. Just pay the extra $20 and don't take the chance of getting charged per KB. An air card alone (with a voice plan on account) is $59.99/ month and you only have it on your laptop. Tethering packages give you internet access almost anywhere on your phone but also give you the option to use it as an "air card" when needed. In addition, its one less contract to sign and one less device to carry.
