gait and sims

Gait phones (6340) have sims right? Can you pull that sim out and use it in an unlocked gsm phone? A friend has one of those Gait phones but it has been throught the ringer (no pun intended) and I have a few gsm phones that I can unlock for him to use

Yes. Even locked cingular GSM phones will work. All you need to make sure is that it runs on GSM Modes800/1900

Keep in mind though that without provisioning the account right, you aren't going to have GPRS. Again, make sure you have the frequencies because if you're using GAIT SOCs, you'll have some bazaar reception behavior. Just call customer service after you swap the sim and have them fix it all. You'll be happy as a pig in (certain curse word).
