I'm looking to get a Sony Ericsson M600i and use it in the Long Island, NY area (Market 42)The phone runs on GSM 900, GSM 1800, GSM 1900, and UMTS...
My questions are, will it work on Cingular's network even though it is missing the 850 band?
and...
Does anyone use an unlocked phone with these settings?
I'm sure this post will be lost among the thousands of "Cingular violates TOS" and "Cingular vs Verizon" posts.
Hopefully the asterisks will throw some people off...
...
It is not a problem if you don`t have the 850 mode, your voice will work fine on the 1900 or 3G network, UMTS is Data only. You might have dataproblems if it is not a branded phone and you are using an unlocked phone.
...
UMTS is voice and data 🙄
"WCDMA
(Wideband Code Division Multiple Access)
Wideband CDMA is a third-generation (3G) wireless standard which utilizes one 5 MHz channel for both voice and data, initially offering data speeds up to 384 Kbps.
WCDMA is also referred to as UMTS - the two terms have become interchangeable...."
...
Yes I know how it works and runs, but for voice it is called 3G and for Data it is called UMTA,
...
Yeah but it run on the European bands for 3G which is the 2100 band. Cingular uses the 850 and 1900 for their UMTS betwork.
...
In Europe they use 900 and 1800 and now are also switching over to 3G.
In Japan, south Korea and such they have 3G / 2100
...
😕 Europe is 2100Mhz for 3G 900 - 1800Mhz for GSM/GPRS/EDGE Where are you getting your info from? Also, Europe is not "just getting 3G" They've had UMTS for a while now.
...
go to www.gsmworld.com and check what Europe has, my phones has worked quiet nicely there. MOto V 551.
...
Cingular uses the UMTS towers for 3G, not the 850/1900, that is the old GSM we use.
...
UMTS is 1900 MHz in the states.
...

yes of course you need the others as a default for areas where you don`t have 3 G yet. Customers would be very very mad if they could use the 3G phone only in the under 20 markets where it is available.
Remember how the old GAIT phones used to work? It was called a Dual phone, what do you think the phones are called now with the 3 G, also Dual phones.
...
so what MHz does 3g run off of if it isnt 850/1900?
...
3G runs 850 for data and 1900 for voice... except in markets where 850 isn't available, then it's 1900 for both.
...
lol, i know, its just some people (actually one person in particular) is stating our 3G network doesnt run off of 850/1900.... 😲
...
you do know that we put UMTS on the same sites we have GSM? they aren't new sites. all markets run ericsson UMTS equipment on the sites and the southeast run nokia GSM, with some nortel in the carolinas. what do you do for cingular, again? it's common knowledge throughout the company that we us 850/1900MHz GSM/GPRS/EDGE and UMTS/HSDPA 850/1900MHz.
...
LOL I agree with you. She seems a bit confused there.... 😕
...
For someone who fixes problems you sure need to be enlightened about networks.
A phone without the 850 band will have significantly less towers available in many markets around the country, including NY.
...
It was really an experience question...
I wanted to know if anyone else was using a phone without the 850 band and getting decent service.
I saw this phone in person and I fell for it immediately.
I was just hoping for some slim chance that it may work, even though I knew the answer to the question...
I guess I'm stuck with my 3125 for now.
...
You could certainly try it if you already have one. The concern would be you might be always roaming on someone elses system. It is my understanding that Cingular uses the old ATTWS network there which was primarily 850 MHz.
