I noticed that Cingular GSM phones allow you to make 911 calls without a SIM card, so whats the point of having one?

That's the only number you can dial without a SIM card.

This has nothing to do with your post but I saw your name when trying to locate towers in Fountain, FL. If you are one in the same who do you think has the best coverage? I have a friend up there that has been having problems with a lot of the carriers.

BY LAW every single phone needs to be able to make a call to 911 as long as it is connected to a service. It doesn't even have to be active.

W/o a sim card, you can't call ANY other number b/c your sim card is what connects the phone to your account and your plan and your number.

mart4jos, to make your phone work. The sim card "dials" in to the Cingular network. An easier way to "download" ringers, graphics and games. A really easy way to transfer phone numbers. If you save numbers to you sim card you will not be able have "ringer id or picture id"

I guess I wasn't very clear about my question.

If a GSM phone can place a call to 911 without the use of a SIM card, then why not just allow any GSM phone to make any call without the extra hardware.

If FCC requires that all phones automatically transmit the callers number and location (within 50-100 meters) to the 911 operator (their computer systems) then why can't a GSM phone work like a CDMA phone; without a SIM card.

(I know that the SIM card is essentially the account)

😁 😁 😁

because without a SIM card, there is no number. It can transmit the IMEI, but there's no subscriber identity.

I dunno about you, but I would much rather avoid having to deal with Customer Service if I switch my phone..which is a benefit of a sim card... 🙂

i'd rather have a sim card because i can just switch phones w/out having to call cust support and put the numbers on the other phone, or now, "download them", its convinient and why make it harder for yourself, thats the main reason im with a gsm carrier
