Can I switch from T-Mobile a week before contract expires?

Has anyone here switched to Cingular from T-Mobile shortly (couple weeks) before their contract expired? Cingular insists T-mobile won't care since it's so close to the end of the contract but I don't know...... Anyone?

I had a customer who ported 6 lines from T-Mobile. When she called to get her account number, the rep told her she was still in contract. She had been having a lot of problems with them and so the rep changed her contract date to the day before so she wouldn't have any ETF's. I thought that was super nice.

And super against policy! If that call was monitored, she's probably no longer a rep with T-Mobile, so don't count on getting THAT rep!

I tried to get out of mine about 3 months early. I even said that I would pay the remaining months bills and they said NO, BUT they did offer me an extra 75 minutes a month for the remainder of my contract... 🙄

That is what is maddening about this ridiculous system. 👿 All you do by not allowing something like that is ensure horrible word of mouth and a customer who will try every other provider before considering a return to their original.. ATT used to prorate the ETF I beleive.. and I think I heard VZW is going to start prorating.. but I could be wrong on that last point..

Yup! Porting your number automatically cancels your account with your old carrier...did you think both accounts stay open at the same time?

I know that you are allowed a 30 trial period when you get a new phone. Not sure if this helps.

You definitely cannot switch even 1 minute before your 2 year contract is up or else T-Mobile will hit you with the ETF. What you can do is have the Cingular sales rep activate you temporary numbers, and then in a week when your contract is up with T-Mobile, you can port your numbers over. Then this also gives you a week to tryout the Cingular service. You have 30 days to tryout Cingular without being penalized with ETF. Also if you cancel within the first 3 days you avoid having to pay activation fees as well.

Whenever you port over a number, you automatically close out the old account, even if you are on a 30 day trial. You can't have a single number on two different carriers...it just doesn't work and doesn't make sense. I mean, unless you want to pay two phone bills 😛

Why do you want to leave t-mobile anyway?

I hate this kind of thing. If it was a rep who told you that, they are just trying to meet a quota. As was on another post, you will be hit with whatever the company's term fee is even if it is just one day early. Just wait it out - you're almost there.
