AT&T.... Cingular..... at&t .....WHAT THE #$%@???

dan327

AT&T dumping Cingular at the end of the year? No wonder they have changed my upgrade status early. I bet if I buy a new phone the new two year contract will be different & cover the terms of service so I can't get out during the transition,

Any body have a clue of what this will mean for the average customer? I remember going from AT&T to Cingular. NOW they want us to go back?

Will this free me from my two year contract> TERMS OF SERVICE ANYONE???

it wont mean anything to the average customer as far as I know. It is just a name change

Its not the same AT&T it was before that "wants us back" so dont jump to conclusions, its ONLY a name change so we are still Cingular, just with a different name, which may or may not happen all we can do is speculate. Your normally allowed to upgrade 21 months into your 24 month contract(at least in my region). So dont get all worried about it, its not big deal.

And if you pay over 75$(or something) per month for more than 3 months in a row you can usually upgrade after 6 months. That's for the Southeast for sure. Don't know about the other places.

I think this will go atop the most annoying thread on phonescoop. Everyday someone wants to know what's going on w/ the name change.

IT'S A NAME CHANGE PEOPLE! AT&T CONTROLS CINGULAR, SO THEY'RE PROBABLY GOING TO CALL IT AT&T WIRELESS.

THE BIGGEST CHANGE WILL BE THE LITTLE NAME ON YOUR PHONE. PPPPEEEEERRRRRIIIIOOODDD.

I just don't like the name change thing... It's going to cost billions of bucks, makes no sense, the at&t name is old and sucks. Sprint has better rates and cooler phones. I think I'll switch to Sprint.

Its actually going to save them money. What is cheaper? To market several different brands? Or one unified brand with huge name recognition internationally. I think choice #2 is obviously the right one. If sprint is so awesome why aren't they the #1 provider? Why is their churn so high?

Cingy is huge because they merged with ATT Wireless. Had they not it would be a very close race for 2, 3 and 4th place. Cingual will be left once sprint gets thier data in place everywere and verizon gets their data act in gear. Not to mention T-mobile. If they will be able to deploy thier plans they got for 4g.

I appreciate your opinion, but the only real competitors in the wireless gig will be Cingular and Verizon next year. They're both making changes that no other wireless only carrier can do.

I can't tell you that, but if you think about it it should be pretty obvious. There are certain things that only Verizon and the new at&t can do. Sprint, T-mo, Alltell, and everyone else simply cannot compete because they don't have the market base for it.

Technically Sprint has more voice coverage in the U.S.A. because of their roaming agreements with Verizon. Since they don't charge for roaming anymore they have the largest coverage area at the lowest cost. Sprint offers more broadband services in more places than Cingular & better broadband content than Verizon... AND the iPod is about as much of a fad as the television or that crazy idea of the automobile replacing the horse.

Say that again when analog goes down. If you look at Sprint's Digital coverage area it's laughable. I looked at it and laughed, so I know. Read up on some of the U-verse announcements made back in 05 when there was still only SBC. Now add in BellSouth and Cingular Wireless all in the same company and imagine what's gonna go down. I reiterate, the only other company that can and is doing this is Verizon.

Totally different types of companies. Sprint is a service provider. Apple produces equipment. Sprint can announce any kind of plans they want, even an unlimited plan for $19.99 a month, and they still wont be in the same field as Cingular or Verizon.

They'll still be able to market their services to people who just want something simple or emergency based usage, but anyone who's serious about communication will be with Verizon or Cingular.

When I went from AT&T to Cingular it required a different sim card and technical problems getting my phone numbers off of it....

And of course all new plans & rates.

This is what I'm worried about more than anything. I know all the gsm technology and coverage will be the same...But does anyone actually think this wont cause website, billing and other problems?

The plans might change a little bit to become BETTER, but the equipment doesn't change. We'll have newer versions of SIMs that can do more, but the older Cingular ones will still work in the equipment. The former AT&T SIMs will not work in Cingular nor the new at&t handsets.

It's Cingular, with a different name. It's not a different company. It's like when we switched from the little Bell wireless companies to Cingular.

2 very big differences here. AT&T Wireless was bought out by Cingular. Now, Cingular is going to just do a name change to align themselves with all of the products and services offered by our parent company, at&t... and it will be at&t mobile, not wireless.

at&t (formerly SBC) owns around 60% of Cingular while Bellsouth owns the rest. at&t is essentially buying out their partners ownership interest. Cingular still has it's own corporate structure and management team and will continue on the path it's on now will little change except possibly in name.

vs.

Cingular Wireless bought AT&T Wireless, a publicly traded company, and integrated AT&T Wireless into their existing system and infrastructure. Former AT&T Wireless systems and infrastructure were slowly eliminated during this integration and changes had to be made to customer equipment to facilitate these changes.

It wont change anything other than the name and maybe some kick-off priceplan promos. With what happened before it was one WIRELESS company going broke being bought out by another WIRELESS company. The AT&T company that bought SBC cingulars parent company had nothing to do with AT&T WIRELESS. They were never the same company just the same name. And since now AT&T does NOT have wireless they will just use our billing and plans from what I've heard. This would save time and money on training and everything else. Since there are NOT 2 different WIRELESS billing systems merging like before it should not be as problematic as it was. Ergo NO migrations. your contract will stay the same but I do see new price plans and features being available to c...

Better ease off the caffeine, no need for name calling. The fact is at&t is a name associated with a bad company. It doesn't matter who bought who, or who owns who. Why does it make good business sense to spend billions of dollars for a name change like this. The hip factor that cingular has will be gone. The at&t name carries baggage. If they spend billions of dollars to improve technology, coverage etc... Now that makes sense. Reducing rates or offering more competitive prices, better terms of service, improving customer service that's smart. Being innovative & different would skyrocket a company like this light years ahead... BUT no instead they are going to spend billions on a name change. WOW really smart.

Yeah AT&T is a recognizable name alright... The recognition of a company that is old, & floundered out of business. Oh lets not forget the glorious history of AT&T Wireless which was a model for how not to run a cell phone company. Sure spend BILLIONS of bucks to erase CINGULAR so that we can call it AT&T. That's a great idea. Perhaps the next new cruise ship could be called Titanic 2 (new titanic) they can use small letters for the new ships title that will be cooler 😎 . While we are at it lets launch billions of dollars worth of ad campaigns to promote the titanic... "Come sail on the unsinkable new titanic (fancy logo here). I see it now of course this is a brilliant business decision.

The nice thing about being branded AT&T will be A: it is a more reconizable name world wide.
B: more of our elderly customers trust that name due to the fact it as been around such a long time.
C: AT&T has tons of money to spend on things that make money such as technology and marketing of that technology.
Lets face it to those who do not have cell phones and have home phones it is the most trusted name in the business. This is why verizon still has so many customers THE NAME helps.Cingular has made a huge name for itself in a short period of time. being backed by AT&T (who has millions of devout customers) will only help devour the only other company that matters: Verizon.
