Talked to my Market Manager

I just tried to ask my Cingular market manager about the Merger. She said she wasnt at liberty to say anything about it because she can get fired. I am not sure if that kinda thing is typical, but i would really like to know the ends and outs of the merger in further detail. i know a good bit about it. But it seems weird that they wouldnt be able to talk about stuff that you can easily find on the internet. unless there is something that we dont know. Any ideas guys, Cain i know you got me on this one.

I just checked that site out. I thought the merger already had FCC approval?

Sounds fun, I'm all for it.

Nope... AWE shareholders approved it by over 90%... Carriers have voiced their support, but FCC and DoJ still have to finish their stuff before the two can integrate... until then we are still competitors.

cool. If both companies approved it as did the carriers then I don't see why the FCC won't. Can't wait, it's gonna be exciting.

A friend of mine works for ATTWS and said that the two networks are already merged and/or being shared by users of both companies. She said that some of her customers have come into the store after buying a new GSM phone and reported that in certain areas they were getting a Cingular banner instead of the AT&T which would indicate to me that she is right. However, I have a Cingular Nokia 6340i on a GAIT plan and have never received an AT&T banner and I travel all over the state on my delivery route. All I ever get is Cingular or Cingular Extend. Can anyone else out there confirm this?

One thing I have learned though is that no wireless carrier has complete coverage everywhere which causes me to carry a tri-mode Verizon phone, a Cingul...

The networks have not been merged, what they are experiencing is the benefit of roaming arrangements between the two carriers. Prior to Cingular's buyout of ATTWS the two negotiated new roaming arrangements which allowed each to benefit more heavily from the other's coverage.

OK, this may be a stupid question then . . .

If they have not merged the two networks but have agreements in place so they are using each other's towers and therefore increase the coverage for the end user what's the difference?

Will there be an additional benefit when the two finally complete the merger and fully integrate the two networks? I'm kind of excited about it because so far, my Cingular GAIT phone seems to be useable in most of the areas I go and I find myself looking to the Verizon phone less and less. There are still a few areas though where Nextel seems to have coverage when no one else does or the others just get a faint analog signal.

Thanks for the reply!

Because the roaming agreements are not in place in all areas. The roaming arrangements are in place to boost areas where one carrier has good coverage and the other doesn't for the most part. So while it gives the appearance of being merged, its more like a team player helping out another. Once the merger of the networks is complete, not only will Cingular have those locations covered where coverage has been a problem, but they will also have the additional spectrum to provide more coverage and cutting edge technology changes. They will also be rolling out service in 13 top 100 markets where they didn't have service before. This will give Cingular coverage in all 100 major US markets. Very cool.

I keep hearing this top 100 markets over and over. Is there a list somewhere? I assume the top 100 markets are the major cities. But how big is a market? For example, I live in a little town in Michigan called Detroit - how big is the Detroit market? Does it include all of the smaller cities too like Flint or are those considered other markets?

And let me clarify my previous question:

I understand what you said about the roaming agreements today versus the combined company tomorrow; that makes sense. I also understand that this will most likely make Cingular more efficient and profitable since they won't have to maintain all of the roaming agreements and therefore be in a better position to invest in additional technology and ser...

Until the deal closes, we at Cingular are actually not allowed to view ATTWS data on their network other than what is publicly available, so your question is a bit tough to answer. We will in theory have more spectrum in many markets, which will improve coverage and efficiency. As for how that will affect any market in particular, we can't even begin to guess until the FCC and Department of Justice are done and the deal closes.

Um...most likely DOJ and FCC will make both ATTWS and Cingular divest in markets that overlap. This means they'll have to sell spectrum.

The SEC requires companys that spin off or merge to go through "quite periods" during the merger phase as the two companies hammer out the nuts & bolts of the merger plan. You know, how big a "golden parachute" the senior execs are going to get for getting "laid off" from AWS! 😉
