3G on a GSM plan
I just activated two lines of service, one with a cu500 and the other with an unlocked e70 or something like that. When activating the nokia i had to put it in as a gsm device rather than a umts device. Will this affect their ability to recieve umts data speeds?

I think it will. I've never done any UMTS/HSDPA activations because we are not getting 3G until next month. But I think you are to change the technology to UMTS in order for it to work correctly. Kinda like when you upgrade someone from TDMA or TDMA-GAIT to GSM.
Anyone, correct me if I'm wrong...

Good news! pos.com doesn't allow you to enter unknown devices under the umts option on there. Any idea on the purpose of this option in the activation process?

Tis true that as long as the sim being used is 3g it'll work...if UMTS/HSDPA is available in the area. The only other thing to ensure everything is that the IMEI number is updated with customer service, though it's really debateable on how significant that is to service.

It shouldn't matter my boss pulled the cu500 out of the box and the HSDPA worked fine. He has a treo650 imei on his account as GSM not UMTS. The only thing that might make a difference is if the nokia has the wrong frequencies for UMTS/HSDPA

That sounds right based on the logic of how the system works.

ATT REPS!
This was confirmed to me yesterday
Whenever you activate a 3G phone the technology must be changed to UMTS. This is done as you changed the IMEI on the account. Problems like the one stated above will happen when activating a phone not offered by Cingular. Apparently this is a glitch that has to be looked at by IT.
After you activate the phone you'll see that it will display UMTS instead of GSM. (just like when we upgraded customers from TDMA to GSM) It's basically the same procedure.

But the phones are still GSM phones...I've seen some laptop cards that are labeled as GSM-UMTS...all phones that are UMTS capable will have straight GSM in them as well...not to mention having GPRS available as a backup to UMTS.
