I have been reading a lot of stuff on here about $18 upgrade fees being bad business, sim cards costing nothing yet we charge $25 for one, etc etc...

Anyways, I would just like to say that CELL PHONES ARE A LUXURY, NOT AN ENTITLEMENT!!!!

You aren't "entitled" to have a cell phone and service, you have to pay for it...you dont have the "right" to have one, you have the "option" of having one.

If you are the kind of person that "needs" a cell phone, then I really don't see why paying $18 dollars extra everytime you renew an aggreement is a big deal? If you "need" a phone but dont want to sign a contract there are plenty of options.

Cingular, LIKE ANY OTHER PUBLICLY SHARED COMPANY IN THE WORLD, is there to amake profit for it's s...

FYI, Cingular is not a publicly traded company, but their parents BLS and AT&T are.

I think the question about the $18 was that when the merger took place Cingular forced people to pay that money even though it is the same company. (ATTWS and Cingular) I think that is why people are upset. The latest lawsuit obviously proves that.

FYI, Cingular and other companies usually give phones away. (A subsidy)

They forced people to pay that fee, but they forced customers who have always been Cingular customers to pay that as well when they upgraded phones, the only time ATT customers paid that was when they upgraded phones to Cingular equipment. They didnt charge anything to ATT customers that they didnt already charge to Cingular customers!

Not trying to be argumentative with you, I just get sort of annoyed when ATT customers complain that they were charged to migrate, but lets not even open that whole can of worms 😁

I think customers are more annoyed that they forced customers from ATTWS to pay to upgrade to Cingular’s GSM network and that is not right because they are 1 company. If they were separate then that is understandable. I do not think many people care too much about the $18 upgrade few now, or else they would not have paid it, but more importantly is that the monthly bill is going to be at least twice more than that, so they should not complain.

Well, there is a lawsuit about that ATTWS customers were forced to pay that fee and the new equipment to be on the Cingular’s GSM network. Why not complain? That is what consumers do. Oh yea, and they like to sue too and they are very naïve. Lol.

Nextel18, yes a lot of companies "give" phones away. But as technology advances the phones may become more expensive to make which is why you may see a lot of companies moving away from the free phones.

Thank you 6037 I totally agree. Not that my agreement says much. I've said before that free phones are the scurge of the cell phone industry. When other indirects and online give phones like the 6102i away for free on a 2 year it completely devalues any lesser phones. Why carry 6030, 6061s and such if you can pick up a free higher quality phone?

No sh!t! I was so pissed off when the cingy website started giving away the 6102i everyone wanted one for free and I had to tell them to F off! Thats why I tell people who buy phones online to turn around and walk out the way they came in!

Ok...I have to ask:

What's so bad about paying a processing fee to your cell phone carrier?

That's really what the "Upgrade Fee" is, it's a paperwork and processing fee! And yet everyone complains about it(unless, like in my store, you call it what it is).

It boggles my mind why people would b*tch about an $18 upgrade processing fee, but not say anything about "Lender Fees" when they buy a car or a house!!! These are WAY higher than anything your carrier will charge you and are involved in something FAR more important...your home or means of transport to work. The whole reason I'm borrowing the money is because I don't have it....why pay more? (of course I know people have to be paid to work and there are legal hoops to jump thr...

1. You gain equity in a home thats why you can justify spending the loan fees you don't gain equity in a cell phone.
2.The "processing" fee is just to generate revenue its not like it costs $18 to click a button and extend someone's contract.
3.The biggest BS is mortgage insurance. It doesn't even insure anything!

1. This I know, but paying to borrow money is just a bit oxymoronic...understandable, but oxymoronic. It's up there with having life insurance, which doesn't pay out until you die.....THAT'S DEATH INSURANCE!!! 😳

2. Actually, maintaining the system upon which that button resides does cost money. If you've ever dealt with POS.com you know how much work it needs on an extremely regular basis. And since Cingy's apparently losing SO much money on its customers that it has to deny them upgrades the funds have to come from somewhere. 🙄

3. I agree...mortgage insurance IS B.S.!

Life insurance is a godsend for some though. A good friend of mine's dad just up and died from cancer his wife has never had to work and they have a lot of bills to pay for their kids and what not. If it weren't for life insurance they would go bankrupt.

Oh I know it is...I myself am a beneficiary (my parents passed when I was 2) and it has helped me a great deal.

I'm just pointing out the irony that we pay for years for something called LIFE insurance and it only pays off in the event of our DEATH. Therefore in a perfect world it should be known as Death Insurance.

I guess it's just too much of a mouthful to say "I need a Family Protection In The Event of My Death Policy". 🙂
