why did it say "3g cdma" on the phone if it's a gsm phone for cingular?
...
It's actually an HSDPA/GSM phone for Cingular.
HSDPA is the upgrade to WCDMA which is a technology that Qualcomm sells chipsets for (including this phone). Hence the Qualcomm sticker that says "3G CDMA."
...
umts and hspda are variants of wcdma which some group made, it basically combines the technologies of gsm and cdma, it uses gsm codecs and software and Sim cards, but it transmits voices like cdma, it is no way compatible with cdma2000 and its variants(1xrtt:voice and data, and evdo:data), the only reason why qualcomm put that sticker on the lg phone is because qualcomm sells chipsets like Ruff said and plus wcdma uses some of cdma's technologies and qualcomm patents so they collect royalties
with hspda and umts, it combines the benefits of cdma and the flexibility of gsm in one technology, so technically cdma is the sole technology of 3g networks but combine it with aspects of gsm, it becomes even better,
im not bashing gsm, i like g...

I asked that question because the pic says "3G CDMA", not WCDMA. 3G CDMA is what is offered from Verizon Wireless and Sprint PCS(EVDO)
...
WCDMA is technically a variant of CDMA and falls under the 3G CDMA category. Qualcomm signifies all phones equipped with their chipsets (including their WCDMA chipsets) with a 3G CDMA sticker. Why make two different stickers when they can save the time and money to use one?
...
you know what your right, because qualcomm didnt directly made WCDMA and its not even a variant of CDMA2000(evdo, 1xrtt)

wow... i mean im pretty excited about this phone, but LG really needs to get off samsung's jock. A900 anyone? I can just see the brainstorming session here:
John: Wow, guys, we should be more like samsung!
Bob: Wait, John, that A900 for sprint is so hot right now... let's blatantly rip off the design and throw a gsm chipset in there so we do not have to compete directly!
All: Great idea!!!
...
It's similar, but it's simply a thin black phone. Shouldn't we be saying that Samsung technically ripped of the RAZR then? I mean...everybody is going slim these days. It's hardly something any company can help. They're not just going to pass over the opporunity for market share in the thin black flip arena because other companies already are in on it.
...
its a trend and thats what makes money but the sanyo katana is an obvious knockoff of the razr, at least the lg cu500(WHICH I CANT WAIT TO GET MY HANDS ON!) deviates from the rest of the thin phones
...
Agreed.
And I cannot wait to get it either!
...
apparently it worked because lg makes garbage phones anyways but that one might just do it for LG, i mean its a really nice looking phone, its not a razr knockoff and its really nice looking, i hope it works well too and has good features, it kinda looks euro to me, maybe because it reminds me of the european razr v3x, as you notice thin phones are a trend but the sanyo katana is an obvious razr knockoff, even with the antenna stub on the bottom but its a nice phone
...
I just got the CU500 dummy phone in, so we shouldn't be waiting too long now(hopefully)

anybody know if this phone has a speakerphone?
...
Yes, it does have a speakerphone.
...
bkw79Jul 10, 2006, 7:17 PM
can u use the speakerphone with the phone closed, and ruff, do u work for cingular?
...
I do not have an answer for that, but I would assume not considering there is not an external speaker.
And no, I do not work for Cingular.

Hmmm! Well, well, well! Mr Bkw79! Considering switching to Cingular?
Yes. You can use the speakerphone while the phone is closed.

Actually no, honestly, I would probably never leave VZW for Cingular. But, I was looking for another carrier for backup phones. Anxiovert, what else can you tell me about this phone? What are the negative things, haven't found anything bad yet. If its all good, I will be getting 2 of them when it's released.
...
I have one, and once I've started the speakerphone, and close the flip, it disconnects the call. How are you continuing the speaker call after closing the flip?
...

Yeah, I used it today, and tried to use the speakerphone with the phone closed, and it hasn't worked for me. Another thing I don't like about the phone is that there is no email client on this phone for pop3 email like there is on the LG CU320. I don't understand why it wasn't included on this phone. However, I love everything else about the phone. I'm gonna be buying 2 of them as soon as it is released. People who use GSM think that LG sucks, but I've used LG's for Verizon, and all of my phones have been superb in everyway. In fact, LG leads all other manufacturers in the United States for Customer Satisfaction for the second year in a row. Yes, GSM LG's haven't been as successful, but if you give this phone a chance, this phone might...

I honestly think that this is the first quality GSM LG that has ever been released in the US. Yes, they make killer CDMA phones, but they definitely struggle in the GSM arena.
This is their first exception.
...
and it might be due to the fact it has a CDMA chipset in there from Qualcomm.
...
?
I doubt it. It's still, all in all, a GSM phone.
...
The back of the phone has a "Qualcomm 3G CDMA" sticker on there because of the UMTS chip in there. I'm guessing, without cracking open my phone 😁 , that the chip handles the 3G and the normal GSM operations when not in a 3G area. Maybe that's why its more than your normal run of the mill LG phone?
...
I know it has a Qualcomm chipset because it is an HSDPA phone...I posted those pictures. However, what I'm saying is that I don't understand what that would have to do with it being a better quality.
Does LG really sit around and think "hey this has a Qualcomm CDMA chipset in it, let's make it a really good phone!"? I doubt it.
I just think it kind of happend that way. That LG makes better CDMA phones than GSM. I honestly doubt that a Qualcomm chipset was the reason this phone is higher quality than previous GSM LGs.
...
OK, I see, when I meant better, I was referring to reception while you meant features. I think this has better reception compared to other LG's because of the chipset. LG did a great job of the overall design and features.
Now that I have a memory card for this, there are some small things I dislike about the music player compared to an "itunes" design, but I can live with it.
...
For all those who are interested
...
Nice. Have you had the chance to use the phone or check it out in any way?
If so, let us know what you thought.
...
I think it stands for/he means: Dallas-Fort Worth
...
Unfortunately we are the red-headed step child of DFW out here in West Texas. We get almost everything they do, but right now no UMTS handsets.
I might order some via a friend who owns stores there just to check it out. It looks very very sweet.
