Why is it so hard to do a rate plan with *NO* contract?

Ask The Shack

Jun 16, 2006, 8:44 PM
It's simple. I own a phone, but can't go on a rate plan WITHOUT a contract? Why is this? Hell, I spoke to multiple reps, and some times they say "sure, you godda talk to sales" then sales tells me that CS doesn't know what they are talking about.

Now I know there is the pick your plan thing, and that's fine. The only problem is that I have to wait 45 days from when i chose the "Pay as you go" plan to switch it over? WTF??!?!?

I have no idea why Cingular likes bending people over, but it's getting kinda outrageous. Is there anyone who can help me go on a rate plan WITHOUT a contract seeing how I own my own equipment? I don't care if I don't have promotional features such as Mobile to Mobile, because I don't know anyone Else with Cingula...

bending you over because its a new 1 year agreement from the date of the change? thats pretty extreme. every other wireless carrier in the US has the same policy you do a price plan change you do a contract if you dont want to do a contract stay where you are on your current plan.

keep in mind that calling plan changes shouldnt change your ability to get a new phone at upgrade pricing so as long as you are happy with cingular what is the issue?

You're misunderstanding me. I bought a phone straight out cash. Unactivated price.

I haven't had Cngular service (because I thought I was getting an employee plan). So now I have a phone that belongs to me, and I'm spending an arm, and a leg with pre-pay. Can someone help me hook my phone up with a rate plan, but no contract?

no. its a 1 year agreement if you want to sign up for service with your existing handset on a new postpay plan, this would be no different with any other carrier.

Then why would the people at CS tell me otherwise? Also, why can't I switch to a pick your plan service from a pay as you go before 45 days of activation?

I dont know the exact reasoning behind it, but thats been the policy for quite some time. As far as CS telling you that you have to sign a 1yr, they didnt know what they were talking about. The Plans are right there in their system without M2M and rollover

Can you give me some form of reference point to your Customer Service Manual that I could point to to make them do it? Because they are telling me flat out that whomever is saying that I can, is a liar. ☚ī¸

You can, but you are going to forfeit Rollover and UM2M. If you want those features, you have to sign at least a 1yr.

That's the funny thing. I chose to go with the pay as you go, now I want the Pick Your Plan option, but I can't because it hasn't been a month since I signed up. I have no idea why this is, but it's very hard to do something simple with Cingular, and I don't know why....

These plans are based mainly around the contract; if you don't want it, the pre-paid is the no contract option.
Suck it up, sign for one year, save a ton of hassle, and move on with your life.

The problem with this idea is:

California market may do NO Contract postpaid plans, however when you try to relocate you are going to have to sign a new contract if New York market does not have this option available. You will have to accept a plan in that market, which will probably require a contract. Sh|tty but true.

You would only lose Mobile to Mobile (you keep Rollover and Nights/Weekends)

But you will either have to provide a SIM card or purchase one from me for $25.

Bleh, I'd rather give you a free bluetooth or something for signing a 1 year though. Why such a strong aversion to the contract? 1 year isnt that bad.
...
Ask The Shack

Jun 16, 2006, 9:22 PM
Yeah it's bad. Think about it this way. When you sign a contract (lets just say a 2 year one) you get a nice hefty equipment discount. Seeing how I already own my equipment, The only thing I get is the shaft. Seriously, I even asked if I signed a 1 year contract would they give me something (such as a credit on my bill). Nope, not a red cent.

So here I would be, signing up for a 1 year contract, be bound to a $175 cancellation fee (that is imposed for the equipment credit that they AREN'T giving me), and they won't even wave an activation fee. So what's my incentive?

Sure, some might say that there is a cancellation fee because you are braking a contract, but who here would sign a contract if carriers wouldn't subsidize the phone price...

Jun 16, 2006, 9:34 PM
Heck, I don't care that much about the number. I could always call relocation to have it changed (without a contract extension, right?). As far a s a simcard. I have one.

I would like to skip some hassle, and have a point of reference that I could have someone in sales look at that would shut them up and preform the SERVICE part of their job....

Relo requires a minimum of a one year agreement.

Go to a Cingular store. Ask for a manager if needed. Ask for a no contract plan without the MTM. You should be fine unless it is a NY market restriction. I know the Central region can offer these no problem at all.

Has anyone actually done this? Do you know of anyone who has actually done this?

I remember the 0 Month Contract option in POS2 but never actually tried it due to commission issues.

Anyone who has this option available could do possibly this:

You will need an address from the Cingular Representatives market. Call customer care and change your address right after the activation if you can. You may have to wait 30 days and if you change phone number to your market you may have to sign a contract. If you just change the billing address you should be fine. Keep the usage address the same as the address you used for activation.

If I remember right, when the Cingular rep does the activation, after or during the credit check "fil...

I have another word for those people;

Shortsighted

You take care of the customers you have, regardless of their needs. I can't tell you how many times someone needing a one year or no contract paid off ten fold in referrals.

Besides, I pay my reps on gross profit. Between the small commission on a no contract and the money they make selling the phone above cost they get something. It may only be enough to buy their lunch at Burger King but my people actually get it about referrals.
