Well SBC was stupid enough to change to AT&T will they be stupid enough to change Cingular to the AT&T name? only time will tell.... Maybe they'll repeat history and destroy the company(s) and kill the AT&T name once and for all. Last time i checked the AT&T name didn't mean s**t and to think they can buy a name and it will make them look/sound like a better company is ludicrus.
...
Its already been confirmed some time ago that Cingular *WILL* be re-branded AT&T in the near future.
...
Just like Star Wars, when the rebels blow up the death star. The empire just makes another one. HAHA. The AT&T name sucks a$$. Why don't they just put it out of its misery.
...
Brand recognition tests still show that AT&T is one of the most recognized and well-trusted names in the world. SBC may have spent $15 billion on AT&T's assets, but I assure you the name was just as valuable. Whether you may think so or not.

Garbage! We wasted tooo much money on the brand image on Cingular Wireless! They're shooting themselves in the foot!
...
You can call it garbage all you want. Plain and simple, it's not.
1. AT&T is a stronger brand than Cingular currently is, without any advertising necessary. AT&T has been a brand that consumers know and trust on a national (and international) level for 120 years. Cingular just went nationwide a short five years ago.
2. With AT&T as a universal brand for all services (landline, broadband, IPtv, sattelite, and wireless), advertising costs will be cut drastically. Advertisements for any AT&T service will have a connection to any other service they offer. For instance, an advertisement about broadband internet is still an advertisement for AT&T, who also sells wireless. That saves big money in the end.
By no means is Cingular shooting the...

I'll bet you'll be surprised by the results of the name change. AT&T may be a stronger universal brand, but much time and money has been spent to make Cingular Wireless the same universal name. After a hugely publicized purchase of AT&T Wireless, consumers will not know the difference between the old AT&T and the new AT&T, it will hurt Cingular Wireless as a company. Re branding a company after only 2 years of purchasing a company of the same re branding name is not smart. Say what you will, I feel it is a bad move. Cingular is a household name in wireless now, not AT&T anymore.

i disagree, i have people walking up all day long with a cingular phone in their (hand, Pocket or purse).
Me: What service do you use?
Customer: At&t...or ummm....
Me: Cingular...
Customer: yea, whatever....
...
🤣 The funny thing is that is so true. I see it happen everytime I walk into a cingular store.
...
i just wish the stupid merger never happened in the first place. i had (original) AT&T wireless before the merger and had it after the merger. i loved at&t wireless. they were the best. i hate cingular. so much that 7 months after the merger i got rid of cingular and switched to Verizon Wireless. vzw isnt as good as the old at&t wireless but like 30000000x better than cingular 😛PP
BLEH!!! cingular!! 👿 🙄
...
AT&T is an acronym for American Telephone and Telegraph Corporation....
Cingular WILL be re-branded to AT&T next year...
...
that came straight from speakeasy 🤣
...
😲
Actually I wrote that all by myself but I did have to look up the meaning of AT&T... lol
...
I agree. Why on Earth would you buy just the name of a failed and hated company and put it on the front of your pretty strong company? I don't get it, but SBC seems to be pretty determined. I wouldn't put it past them to change Cingluar's name just to get all the companies under the same name umbrella. It's not any more stupid than what they have already done.

😕 ATT was the stronger name

AT&T was not a failed company - it was the Giant at the top of the heap that all the smaller companies were trying to steal business from. The main reason it didn't stay the king of telecomms was anti-trust lawsuits. Regardless of the strength or integrity of the company that currently uses that name, the name itself is very powerful for it's recognition.

We all need to remember it's actually a totally different company that is just wearing the clothes, so to speak of the old AT&T. AT&T wireless (the company that no longer exists) was an excellent employer, they had great service & plans, and aside from the fact that they were bleeding money (which is why they got bought), they were a great company.
Since Cingular/SBC/AT&Tcame along, things have been getting worse in countless ways, though not necessarily from the customer side of things. I feel increasingly guilty representing this company and it's ridiculous polcies, but I know that it's par for the couse with telecomms. 😢 I'd jump ship, but I just had a kid and I REALLY need steady income (they don't pay terribly) & healt...

Well, where do I begin?
Ed Whitacre is the head of ATT not Cingular. ATT is a publicly traded company. Cingular is headed by Stan Sigmund. BOTH have to make SEC filings and are therefore governed by said rules of accounting and such.
Exactly what policies are you guilty/ashamed of representing?
Don't drive by post like that and then chicken .... your way out by being vague. You don't even know who runs who but you sure are quick to jump policies. Most people like you DON'T EVEN UNDERSTAND what the represent.

You're right, I should elaborate:
Ed Whiteacre is the head of the Company that effectively controls the company I work for. My bias against him has to do with some statements he has made (which I won't get into) My ire has a lot to do with the fact that my job becoming part of this empire.
However, you're right in that I should be aiming my barbs at Sigman (not Sigmund, btw). Is the company doing anything outright illegal? Probably not, but it is helping the super rich executives that run the company become even richer, while simultaneously striving to give as little payment and as few benefits as possible to the majority of it's emeployees.
I'm not a huge fan of the bourgeoisie, in case you haven't guessed. Ask how readily I wou...

I agree with your last line: I think all the major carriers are pretty much the same as far as policy goes. That is why I think it is totally pointless to troll at any carrier, unless it is tracfone...lol just kidding.

Yes, but the weaker company. Here in Oklahoma, where SBC was and is, AT&T has left some really bad blood as they faltered and fell. It doesn't seem like a good move around here. SBC has been a great company, but taking on the AT&T name has not done them any favors around here. There are people who would rather be without any form of communication than deal with AT&T again.
...
I just don't understand the hoopla over the AT&T name. ITS JUST A NAME. SBC is still the same company, they're just readopting the name. People should realize that the name is changing, not the company.
Am I missing something here??

Yes. Older people HATE AT&T... Younger people only know AT&T Wireless and what happened to it... (those outside of this message board and outside telecommmunications)... They are closing out two VERY important customer base groups here. AT&T isn't considered 'cool' by the younger crowd like Cingular is and isn't trusted by the older generation........... it's that plain and simple. And outside of the areas that Verizon services, people only k...

yea why would they want to keep customers?..who needs money anyway

like so many times before, companies change their name to undergo a reimaging of sorts. think about any of the bands that you like that changed their names, or groups that broke up and did a lot better as solo projects.
anyways
think about how easy it is for people to think about verizon. you think of one name and you get every service that they provide. when you think of cingular you have to think of at&t (remember folks, the new at&t is all lowercase), sbc, bellsouth, and in some areas suncom because of the market exchange. by purchasing the name and unifying the fronts you can create a veritable empire again like the Ma Bell of old.
look, it's not that difficult. when you read any of the interviews with Stan-boy all he talks abou...

I fully agree. It is much more sensible and cost-effective to have all services under one brand.
But I do think that you mean Ed is the one who talks about Cingular being just like Verizon by 2007. Stan hasn't been nearly so aggressive with his intentions.

A name won't change things but so many of you think AT&T was crap and i think AT&T Wireless was a great company. First they were always first to roll out advanced technologies: they were first for GSM and first for 3g. Second they're upgrade policies kicked but: you could get a new phone for great prices after just 9 months. They did not charge for incoming text messages-thats my favorite of all. So-yeah, customer service may not have been so great but its not that great with anyone else either. Let's face it..the name AT&T has been around longer than most
