Sprint takes on Cingular, takes on Sprint.

Claims about the quality of wireless networks are all fun and games until someone gets taken to court. Cingular has done just that in a May 9 court filing against Sprint Nextel, setting the stage for a legal showdown that could ultimately spell the end of ridiculous and meaningless claims that a network is "most powerful," "most reliable," or "l33t." It seems the spat started after Cingular began spreading the word that its network has the "fewest dropped calls" (you know, the commercials that cleverly drop out the sound, making you think your television's busted). Sprint Nextel, with its "most powerful" claim, took issue with that, and brought it before the Better Business Bureau's National Advertising Division to sort out. Cingular, in res...

there will never be proof one carrier is better than the other. i could be the biggest vzw fan ever and as soon as they do one thing wrong to me BOOM! i hate them and my NEW CARRIER is the best thing that ever happened to me. this is what makes consumer reports and j.d. powers so overrated. why run up on tim jackson who left cingular because they wouldnt give him a free razr so he went to vzw and paid $189.00 for it and ask him who the best carrier is? OF course its gonna be vzw, atleast until they do something he dislikes and he moves to sprint. who ask: he tim out of all 3 carriers you've had this far rate them on call clearity: OF COURSE TIM WILL PUT SPRINT FIRST, so its all b.s i say let the customer OFFICAL customer count of each carrie...

I agree.

But that's not what this is about. At all.

The companies are starting to "challenge" each other over data and facts, not consumer opinion. Where is the proof that Cingular has the fewest dropped calls? Nobody has seen it, really. And where is the proof that Sprint has the most powerful network? Who knows?

And so, the battle begins...

i would bet on it but i always lose when betting on major stuff. i.e. my philly eagles 🙄 .

my heads towards cingular in this battle.

i have a phone from cingular, sprint, vzw, and t-mo.

cingular and verizon come out on top. verizon being second because they drop calls on certain roads where even t-mobile has coverage.

sprint, then t-mobile. outdoor coverage with sprint is great but indoors sucks. i get no love at the mall, 1-2 bars at my house, and in scarce areas its spotty. i.e. out near a park in my area or a lake.

its almost the same with t-mobile. their indoor coverage is a little better but in scare areas its spotty. i.e. same park or lake.

(my judgement comes from personal road trip and travels that span fro...

I totally agree with you.

I too would put my money on Cingular in this one. That is actually one of the reasons I found this story to be so interesting. Cingular must have plenty of confidence in their claim if they were aggressive enough to bypass the BBB and file an official lawsuit against Sprint.

I for one have no problem with belieiving their claim. I have had all the majors, except for T-Mobile (because I was never brave enough to put up with spotty coverage), and I have found Cingular to be the best (for myself).

I would, in general, put Cingular and Verizon at the same level from my travles. But as for the general area that I live, Cingular is superior in buildings and doesn't have the isolated dead spots that I have encount...

I disagree companies are stupid enough thinking a "research company" is actual fact when it isn't. If they want actually proof i say gather 10% of each carriers network put then in a room and have them answer some questionaire. Then maybe they would have a case. Other then that when your going to call someone out it's

1) your hoping the other will back down

and

2) since they didn't back down, you can't back down either.

but that's just me.
I've tried tmob and cing, they both don't work in my house neither does usc, but sprint does 😉

i can see the FCC. i would only trust local news stations not CNN or World News Now. they too might be overrated.

even the integraty of a few of my local news stations my not be upholdable.......2 of them get huge @$$ discounts from cingular and vzw. 😳

That they had the fewest dropped calls Nationwide.
It is my opinion that Cingular will lose any arguments over this issue:

"...But Telephia also said it had "no knowledge of the specific methodology (markets, time periods or statistical thresholds) Cingular used to reach the nationwide 'lowest dropped call' conclusion."

Well, where I live, Verizon is the only company that has consistent coverage. Sprint, Cingular, and Tmobile all drop calls. I have had every carrier except Cingular. I know someone who had Cingular in this area off the interstate that couldn't get any consistent service. Verizon is the only service that works there as Sprint doesn't either. Tmobile is more likely to not have coverage at all than to drop calls.

I will say that Sprint and Cingular seemed to work better than Verizon when I took a trip to SoCal last summer.

Even if Cingular's conclusions about Telephia's study prove to be accurate, How would Cingular determine that Telephia is "the leading independent research company", as they claim?
Based on what?

probably based off how many contracts they have had for research queries. Or perhaps the total number of major studies they have performed as compared to other research companies doing the same thing.

Keep in mind i said probably. but I imagine that is atleast something that shouldnt' be hard to prove. Maybe the word "leading" is a bit.......misleading. they could have said "a top research company" or "major".

I can't wait for this lawsuit to end. I hope all the carriers get caught with their pants down looking like idiots. I'm so sick of their competing with stupid slogans.

I really still feel that Cingular should have kept the term: "Cingular: Fits you best" rather than "raising the bar". Over the top claims really only i...
