Cingular will in fact be renamed AT&T Wireless.

Its a good move. Att is a well known trusted name. Cingular doesnt even sound like a wireless phone company. Not sure who thought of that name but its pretty stupid. Basically they named the company after a prescription medicine named singular. Att is a MUCH better name. As for the logo. Kinda glad thats going away as well. I dont see what a Orange X has to do with anything.... good bye Cingular. we will remember that silly name in the history books.

This has been known for a while now.
They are thinking of this on a global level
where the AT&T name is well better known
than Cingular.

Think of it this way: Cingular's number 1 competitor can do broadband internet, home phone, and wireless. Qwest also has the same deals.

If we changed the name to AT&T, we could have AT&T stores that had everything bundled so the customer could do all of thier business with us. It would be a little confusing if we had our broadband and landline stuff called AT&T, and then our wireless called Cingular. Makes more sense to change.

A lot of people won't like it at first, but I say F them because this is a VERY smart business move. If you got a problem with it, go somewhere else. 50 some odd million people are going to have better service than you.

agreed... but to a certain extent. the few billion it will cost to rebrand cingular to att (a company that was well publicized that we took over) and the offerings of a single store for markets that are dying in place of companies like Cingular will take YEARS to recover. with just a billion that will be spent on marketing, don't you think it would be a little more wise to use that to further our 3G rollout a little quicker, or i'd even rather see us GIVE gsm phones at a loss to tdma customers to get the entire customer based switched than waste money on rebranding to a dead name...

and as is, bundling with either att or bst is a pain because of the different billing systems... so are they going to have just one billing system for all pro...

AT&T a dead name? Please tell me you're joking.

I guarantee you if a national brand recogntion poll was taken...AT&T would easily rank in the top three.

One of the most valuable things to SBC when they made the decision to buyout AT&T was the name. It's been a household name for 120 years! You can't beat that.

To SBC (now AT&T as we all know), the AT&T name and logo were worth $16 billion alone.

People know and trust the AT&T name, despite whatever problems they may have seen in the past. Although the Cingular brand has been continuously growing in strength, there is still a wide group of people that have no idea what Cingular is. Afterall, its only been around for (almost) six years. How can a brand like that compete with one of...

Cingular has a 100% name recognition now. when we purchased at&t wireless we were at 97%... Cingular attracts the youth market and with a name like at&t, it's not going to be as effective. seriously, do some research into the advertising and marketing end of it. bundling is a dead concept as well, if it were so popular every bellsouth customer would have cingular... it's not going to be the big thing you and ed whiticre think it will be. the former at&t wireless customers are already unhappy with the change, now at&t is going to slap in the face.

"They (at&t) have spent a lot of money re branding to pretty much the same logo and a lot of little letters..." as quoted from a wireless vp from a competing company...

Are you basing name recognition on the top 100 markets? Saying that Cingular has 100% name recognition is saying that nobody does not know what Cingular is. There are definitely people out there that still have no idea.

In fact, there are stil markets out there that Cingular doesn't cover, and I' m pretty sure that people in those markets are not necessarily going to know what Cingular is.

I could ask my sister (who is oblivious to the wireless industry, other than knowing that she uses a Cigular phone) what Alltell is, and she would have no idea. Now Alltell is a regional carrier, but its on the larger side of that category. Likely the reason she would have no idea about Alltell is because they do not serve the market.

So no, I rea...

yes, Cingular has 100% brand recognition. why do you think they have a nascar driver? american idol? and it's not just in the top 100 markets, it's all markets... we service 296 pops now... that's almost pure saturation.

Cingular does not service all markets. No wireless carrier does. Have you not read the countless posts in other forums about Cingular not being available at all in X, Y, and Z areas?

And I'm still telling you...Cingular does not have 100% brand recognition. Perhaps they are close...but they aren't there.

I am sure someone already posted this, but I am too lazy to read through all of the posts (typical American!)...

Cingular, when they renames the company, wanted to be called "Singular," the single company you will want to use, and you are being treated like their singular customer. When making a website, they wanted a name that hadn't been used, and www.singular.com was already taken, so the corporate braniacs decided to put a "C" instead of an "S" shifting focus to the "c" meaning "Customer"... "Singular Customer" = Cingular!

At any rate, I am glad that it's being changed to AT&T Wireless also. Like many have said, it's a trusted brand.

no. at&t is not a trusted brand. that's just it. many people over 50 can't stand them and people of younger generation think of att wireless, not the big daddy company it used to be. and since bell labs, they haven't really done much except waste good research.

I agree, I think they should leave the Cingular name the f#%^ alone. I like the Cingular name more than ATT.
Every time I think of ATT the first thing that comes to mind is my dad smacking the dinner table (while reading a bill) and cursing like a sailor for all the long distance hidden charges and s#$%... 😕 I was like 7-9 yrs old... I guess I'm traumatized! 🙄

What kind of message does this send to former AT&T customers that were migrated to Cingular? They went from AT&T to Cingular and then back to AT&T. That's confusing as hell. ...

Worse yet, the ATT customers who were sent to SunCom in North Carolina. They are already confused. "I was ATT, ATT was bought by Cingular, why am I SunCom? Now you are ATT? Am I ATT now?" Glad I don't have that to deal with.

Advertising experts say the move could bring heavy marketing costs, as much as $500 million each year for several years, the report said.

How much money has and is going to be wasted with Cingular just on re-branding and advertising... again?

If I was a customer, I'd be pissed just on how much money has been wasted already on branding and advertising versus improving customer service and network reliability.

I can hear the new campaign now:

'Join Cingular, pay for our mistakes by making them yours'

That's nothing compared to the "least dropped calls" cochamamie... In their defense, I'm happy. AT&T is much more recognizable than the funny Cingy dealie.

I'm still waiting on the next un-testable, un-provable boastings from any of the Teir 1 carriers... VZW has the largest network, Cingy has the least dropped calls. This one test is from JD Powers, this one is from Telephia.

In T-Mobile's defense, I don't see them getting bought out anytime soon. Their rate plans are so competetive. I think that T-Mobile is the only reason that plan prices have increased their minutes so darastically.

But I love my Cingular! .... I mean.... I love my AT&T Wireless! đŸ¤Ŗ

Does anyone think that the advertising is going to trickle down and bear a burden on employee wages and consumer rate plan pricing? I don't.

Although I think that $500 milliion is a TON of money to spend on advertising a name that we killed off and are bringing back from the dead, it's money that is still going to be spent in advertising. If anything, I feel that changing the name will bring opportunities to change other things in the company for consumers: better rate plans, better text messaging plans, offering insurance on EVERY PHONE, etc. (not saying that this is going to happen... hell if I know).

If rebranding and advertising the "new" old name gives this company the opportunity to prove itself as a forerunner in wireless serv...

And it won't take nearly that much to get AT&T back to where it was.

Just remember...one company with one unified brand for all of its services is a huge money maker.

Every time you see a commercial for AT&T landline service, you'll think of wireless too. Every time you see a commercial for AT&T DSL, you'll think of landline as well. Every time you see a commercial for AT&T wireless, you'll think of all of the other services that AT&T has to offer.

Heck, they can even "bundle" their commercials together and market all services in one simple advertisement.

It's a win-win situation for advertising in every component of the AT&T company.

God what a circus! I mean, I truly do understand the purpose behind doing this name change, but both the customers and front-of-the-line sales reps and Care reps have had enough, and now this actually goes through. I love how Sigman a couple of months ago sent out that email to all employees saying "Dont worry now y'all, we's not gonna change her name, ya hear?" What a lying hillbilly.

Now, if they keep all the systems in place thats one thing, but if they start coming out with all kinds of new systems again, the reps are gonna be even more burnt out (if thats even possible), and if they even DARE to cut hourly pay for new reps and commissions, bonuses, etc, then Verizon is sure to catch up mighty quick.

What a CIRCUS! Glad I got out...
