why do you have to sign a contract at all

Don't tell me about getting a phone at a discount, All the carriers will still make you sign even if you have your own phone. I work for the cable company and we give discounts if you sign a contract but you don't have to. We offer a free install and other things to sign, but like I said you don't have to. So why is it that you have to for cell phone service. I mean I did not have to when I got my home phone or the power or water. Please someone give me a reason that make sense. 🙄

How about the service is subsidizing the cost of a cellphone you get if you get it new through them. Credit checks are also required, and that credit check will determine if you have to put down a deposit. Not all agents are willing to let you provide your own phone to get service, because they won't make much money off of a contract if you provide your own phone. When you get a phone in the store, whether from the corporate store, or an authorized agent, the low cost of a phone on a 1 or 2 year contract is what's paying for your phone. Some people want the phone subsidy ended, but if that does, then we'll see basic phones going for $150 and up, and even higher yet on top of the line phones. You won't see a basic phone being offered for...

The first thing I said was.Don't tell me about getting a phone at a discount, its always the same old BS answer. I never said anything about the credit check, I do have a plan with Cingular and its not a prepaid and I did sign a contract and got a good deal on the phone but not from Cingular I got mine at LetsTalk but Cingular would have not let me have service without a contract even if I paid full retail for the phone and agreed to the credit check. Why not that what I would like to know.

Look heres the deal, If I pay the retail price for the phone and my credit check says no deposit and I pay the set up fee. Why should I have to sign a contract? I know I could go prepaid but thats really for people who have credit problems or dont mine paying more for the service. Why cant I get the plan that I want and not have to sign a contract. This is just a question. I have a plan and a contract I just would like to know why that was the only way. 🙄

I dont know where you got your information from, but you were misinformed. If you have your own equipment you don't have to sign a contract. If you want things like free mobile to mobile, you have to at least sing a 1 yr contract. If you want to pay $9.99 for it, you can do a no commitment service agreement. You agree to pay your bill, we agree to provide you service, and there is no ETF for cancelling at ANY time.

The reason companies want a commitment is because they have to report to investors. Having a stable and soluble income is the greatest indicator a company is doing well and by such investors influx more money to the company thus it can expand either more services or network.

That is the main reason Cingular and Verizon don't file for IPO because they will turn like ATT wireless. Right now the companies have big parents with deep pockets that in the event they go unsolvant there is daddy to bail them out.

You don't have to get a contract. Pay full price for the phone, or provide your own. Without a contract though, you won't receive the mobile to mobile feature... so if your not going to use it, don't worry about it and stay off of contract 🙂

Can you provide any more info on this? I recently bought a HTC TyTN and after I approached Cingular to get a service plan I was told I still need to sign a 1 year contract.

Depending on the plan, you would need a contract.

If you're adding to an existing familytalk plan, then you'd have to at least be on a 1 year contract because it's a promotional plan. If you're looking for an individual line of service, then you can do a no-commitment but your plan will not include mobile to mobile.

If you still want the mobile to mobile but absolutely don't want a contract, you can add that feature on for $10 a month. To get it free it needs at least a 1 year contract.

what is the big deal about a contract? most people with cell phones have contracts. you have 30 days to try out the service... in which time you should know whether or not you are happy with it.

ralph is correct in saying that you can pay full price for a phone or bring in your own phone (if it's compatible) if you want to go on a regular plan without a contract, but again, you won't get the free mobile to mobile which is a promotional feature available only with a 1 or 2 yr. committment.

You're the exception. Many people have a choice of which company they use for their home phone service with regular CLECs or with VOiP providers as well as Skype In service. And for electricity in some cities you have a choice as well as a choice of providers for TV programming with more than one choice of cable as well as DBS (Direct TV/Dish Network.) Just because you don't have the choice lots of people do.

HHmm... I also only have one option for home phone service (leaving out internet options). One option for electricity (city owned)
and one option for cable...

I live in Jersey, so the amount of people here would probably outnumber most states in the country... you'd think we would have all the options..

As has been pointed out you are not the only one and many people *do* have a choice of phone companies or electric companies. You may not have a choice of electric companies but I'm betting that there is at least one other and maybe several other CLECs that would not force you to use VeriZon or whoever your local phone company is. If you look at the prefixes for your areas and ...

Well.. you DON'T have to sign a contract, but you will not get the free mobile to mobile. We offer two of every plan. One has mobile to mobile, the other doesn't. Don't let anyone tell you differently. That's why the plans are there.

So that the cellular company can report earnings to their stock holders. Also so the cellular companies can forcast how much they will spend on infrastructure enhancements...ie, tower build out.

And the number one reason...to make you ask why.

And it worked!

You sign a contract because you are using their service. Think of it as a loan. Your plan is $40.00 a month and you sign a 2 year contract.

That's $40.00 X 24 Months = $960 which is what you are taking a loan out for through the cell phone company. The loan is essentially their service. You can not pay the loan off early though. It will only show up as credits on your account and your bill will draw from those credits.

What do you get out of the loan? You get their cell phone service throughout the loan.

What do you get out of a car loan? You get a car when you are done paying it off.

You must remember that this is a service that someone is providing for you that will make your life a ton easier. They don't have to ...

That was quite ignorant.

Cingular does not require service agreements. In exchange for a better rate plan or a subsidized phone you would be required to do a 1 or 2 year agreement.

Besides discounts??

You get the m2m feature when you sign a min 1 yr contract.

If you don't want a contract, we have plans that eliminate the built in mobile to mobile feature.

You aren't 'required' to sign a contract for service. Just for the special kicks, like your free installs.
