3G describes a wireless technology in the 3rd generation. GPRS and CDMA2000 are both 3G technologies. However, 3G generally refers to CDMA2000 in most conversations and sometimes tends to include EVDO (which I believe is specific to Verizon's implementation of CDMA2000 high speed data...though I could be wrong). Cingular will NOT support CDMA2000 or EVDO.

EDGE has the capability to burst up to 2 mbps (megabits per second), but does not stream this fast. Since 3G defines the technology that allows the high speed, you could say 3G is just as fast. You could also say 3G is slow, since technically, it is describing the underlying technology, and not what makes it fast.
