hello all of you Cingular users,

i have a quick question, i know that Cingular is currently upgrading their network, and they are going to be using WCDMA. i was just wondering is WCDMA just like Verizon's CDMA?

thanks 🙂

Verizon uses CDMA2000. GSM operators use WCDMA/HSPDA?UMTS. Just a different implementation of 3G CDMA.

Not really. That statement could be (and I believe is) very misleading. 3G CDMA and 3G UMTS are very different from each other although they share the same coded-air interface. That is the only similarity between the two technologies.

"WCDMA

(Wideband Code Division Multiple Access)

Wideband CDMA is a third-generation (3G) wireless standard which utilizes one 5 MHz channel for both voice and data, initially offering data speeds up to 384 Kbps.

WCDMA is also referred to as UMTS - the two terms have become interchangeable.

WCDMA is the 3G standard that most GSM carriers are moving to. Parts of the WCDMA standard are based on GSM technology. WCDMA networks are designed to integrate with GSM networks at certain levels. Most WCDMA phones include GSM as well, for backward compatibility.

WCDMA borrows certain technology ideas from CDMA, as the name implies, but is in fact very different and incompatible with phones and networks using "CDMA" technology.

Heres a definition I found on the phonescoop glossary: https://www.phonescoop.com/glossary/term.php? gid=104

Its alot more of a difference between 3G and 2G. CDMA is the closed source wireless technology developed and primarily used here in the US by Sprint and Verizon. CDMA works by all users transmiting on the same frequency at the same time, the C in CDMA stands for code. A individual code is assigned to a phone each time it places a call, this phone is then used to determine which, out of all the phones talking, is which. CDMA is a 2G technology, the 3G upgrade path to CDMA is CDMA-2000 1xRTT.

GSM is built off the TDMA platform which is something of a world standard. TDMA, instead of having all phones transmit at once, gives each phone a specific timeslot to transmit in. This is carried over in GSM. WCDMA is the name for the 3G upgra...

What this leaves unstated is that Verizon and Sprint both have 1xRTT deployed over most of their network already (at least as much as Cingular has GPRS), and are deploying EV-DO as their 3G technology. EV-DO and CDMA can apparently coexist from the same device at the same time, although the High data rate of EV-DO can make it hard to tell....

Also, EV-DO has initial data rates about double the previous claim for WCDMA/UMTS. I guess this is also different from HSDPA? People seem to be using UMTS and HSDPA interchangeably, so maybe I am confused.

FWIW... 😈

HSDPA is the next generation of UMTS. Its basically an upgrade to UMTS that is backwards compatible w/ GSM. EV-DO is to CDMA what UMTS is to GSM. EV-DO was developed for CDMA after UMTS was developed for GSM. EV-DV was suppose to be an upgade that can still happen to EV-DO. HSDPA, URTRAN, HSUPA, and HSPA are upgrades to UMTS to compete w/ EV-DO.

so if I understand this correctly, then CDMA2000 1xRTT is really more of a 2G than a 3G technology, becuase EV-DO is the 3G technology...or did I miss something in translation?

People keep forgetting that there's a really good glossary on the left hand side. It sez:
