Giving Cingular a Try, Have a Couple ?s

Hi,
We are considering porting to Cingular from VZW, I am planning on starting the 30 day trial this week, but I have a couple of questions for Cingular vets, or hopefully a Cingular employee:

1. I don't want to port my number over until I know Cingular will work for me, so is it possible to go through the 30 day trial with a new number, then switch my number over if we like it?

2. I am planning on getting one of the refurb Treo 650s for myself, and I believe I understand how MediaNet works, vs. PDA Connect, so correct me if I have this wrong: If I order my treo without a data plan, then call up after the fact and ask to have the $20 unlimited MediaNet added to my account, I will be allowed to do this, as long as I don't tell them it ...

just an FYI, you'll get better reception with a non-pda phone in most cases, so if you have any reception issues, it may not necessarily be the network, but the Treo. my treo work fantastic when i am near a tower (within 2-3 miles or so), but starts to get iffy in some lower-coverage

Thanks for your help 🙂

So I can buy the treo online, then go to the store after I get it and add the MediaNet?

As far as reception, my plan is to actually buy the refurb Treo for $139, then get myself a V3 off ebay (saw one for $220). That gets me 2 cool phones for a really good price...

Couldn't do that with VZW!

Thanks again...

The V3 is only 199 with Cingular brand new. Why would you want to pay more for a used one?

it's 199 with a contract, but he is using his discount on getting the Treo. if he were to pay no commitment price from cingular for the V3 it would be $309, so he's getting a better deal doing it the way ...

Is the $199 without a contract? To get the $139 Treo I have to sign up for a voice plan, so I would not get any other discounts on phones. The $220 on ebay is to buy the V3 brand new, unlocked, without any contract...

Changing your number later will generate a number change fee. Considering you can port back to Verizon why not do it at the beginning?

As far as the MEdia net, the $19.99 plan will not let you access full internet and not let you use the faster EDGE speeds. You are also subject to audit and they could legally charge you for data at the per use rate (since MEdianet is designed for regular handsets).

I would also review the offer online. In most cases the price requires subscription to PDA connect to get the price.

Thanks for the info,
The only reason I wanted to wait to port is I don't want to pay the ETF until I have to. I am a benefactor of the Motorola V710 lawsuit, and one of the options is the ability to get out of your contract without paying the ETF and a refund for the price of the phone, or if I jump ship before the settlement is final, I would get the ETF money refunded also.

I guess I misunderstood the MediaNet, I thought that it was the same internet that PDA Connect got you? I do want to be able to surf the "real" internet, browse forums, ebay, etc... If I have to pay for the higher priced data plan, it's not the end of the world, we will still be saving money...

I appreciate your help 🙂

you'll want the PDA connect then.

and as far as the $36 charge to change numbers, it can be waived easily. i never charge people for changing it in situations like yours

It will work, but you are subject to those restrictions. I have personally never seen anyone have those issues but know they exist (billing) and the EDGE speeds are usually worth it.

Good luck.

So you do notice a difference in speed between the PDA Connect vs. MediaNet? Other people have said there is not a noticeable difference...

Also, I just read through the terms of the contract, and it never actually says they will charge you retroactively for using MediaNet this way, it only says they will remove you from that plan... Unless I missed something 😕

Not charging retroactively, charging 1 cent per KB currently. I have never seen it, just heard from others who have.

The bigger issue is speed. I have used my PDA as a connection to my laptop and using the GPRS vs. EDGE is very noticeable. On my wifes old plan she had MEdianet unlimited and on mine I have full internet. Definate difference in speed, checked on Cnet.

The speed difference comes from logging in to GPRS/EGPRS differently. The WAP login (MediaNet) is limited in someways to WAP/Email traffic. The ISPDA login is for PDA connect and laptop connect and is unrestricted.

IP traffic is logged for billing purposes.. if you start racking up megabytes on MediaNet far beyond what is practical and capable of a normal handset you might raise some eyebrows. If your account gets audited (these are mostly random, and happen frequently) you will get caught.

Going into a store will be no different than calling customer service to port the number onto your existing line. If you do go to a store be sure it is an original Cingular location and not a former AT&T location as the latter usually has reps less technically inclined when it comes to things such as this (in addition to not even having access to the right application in the event of difficulties).

The rep in either case has the ability to waive the number change fee. Personally I would not charge for it as its not really costing Cingular any money seeing as we are assigning you a number that is not in our own pools. (We charge $36.00 for number changes because your old number won't be available for reuse for an extended period of 6 ...

Thanks,
That is precisely the type of confusion that convinced me to wait until the end of my 30 days to port. I will have to pay VZW an ETF on my line, but I will get that back when the V710 lawsuit is finalized. I am confident that Cingular will be good enough as far as coverage to make me happy, plus there is the benefit of SIM cards and rollover - 2 things VZW will never have...
