Name Change on ATT TDMA

I need informed reps for this.

My boyfriend has an ATT plan in his name (on the TDMA network, if it at all matters). He is going to be porting his number to my carrier and going under my plan. Therefore, the name on the account for ATT needs to be in my name, and not his.

I've been hearing problems about reps being able to do certain things in the store because #1, it's on ATT, and #2, it's on the TDMA network.

I have questions, that I need answered.

#1: Will it extend the contract?
#2: Can it be done in the store?
#3: Is it automatic (instead of waiting until next bill cycle)?

Is there anything else that I should know about?

And I am located in Eastern Pennsylvania (if that makes a difference).

Thank you for your...

i'm not sure if it would help but it might work,
i would have him renew his contract under your name with a new cingular gsm phone, and then during the trial(it is usually 14 days) have the plan canceled and then port the number to your carrier. you're probably having problem becuase att doesnt exist anymore and cingular is trying to get rid of tdma completely and then get everyhting to gsm. when this number porting came around they were in the process of making everything gsm and the only reason i think you're having problems is because either (1) the cingular people are lazy, or (2) just because the tdma is outdated old technology
i hope i helped a little bit.

just out of curiosity what carrier are you porting the number to?

if you are porting a number DO NOT renew a contract you will pay ETF. simply do a transfer of service. you can get a form at your local store or by calling into customer service (you will both be needed to speak to the rep)

You shouldnt need to change the name on the ATT account to port his number over to your carrier. All you need to do is to supply the infomation from his old account to your carrier with him on the phone with you to verify that he wants his number ported

Yea, I am required to have it in my name because of VZW's policy (not meaning to start another flame war).

I can verify this. When I was switching from Sprint to VZW a little over a year ago, my wife and I wanted to switch the phones from being in my name to being in hers. VZW would not allow that. They told me that the account with them had to be in the same name as the account that I had with the carrier that I was leaving.

It's VZW policy but it doesn't mean it is not possible. I do it all the time from the Cingular store I work in.

what you're looking to do is called a change of financial responsibility. your boyfriend calls us, authorizes you to assume financial responsibility for his service, we transfer you to the correct department to have this put in your name. Provided there is 12 months or less remaining on the contract, the account is current, there shouldn't be any problem. It will cause prorated bills (he's still responsible for all charges until you take over) and will not result in an extension of the contract, you merely make a verbal commitment to honor the remaining term of the agreement.

I would try talking to another VZW rep. Most people just THINK that you have to have both accounts in the same name. I have ported multiple numbers from one company/name to a different company/name but only if both people were present. This can be done because during activation it asks for all the prior porting info, like name and address and stuff.

If VZW continues to act high and mighty as usual, wolfpsider was correct, you will have to do a change of financial responsibility at a Cingular store by filling out some paperwork.
