"Verizon Wireless Inc. and Sprint Nextel Corp. will share a $26 million contract to supply cellular phones, walkie-talkies and related services to state workers, the Department of General Services said Thursday.
The two companies edged out rival Cingular/AT&T Wireless, which had together previously controlled half of the state's wireless communications business.
Verizon and Sprint Nextel will supply basic equipment for free, and the state will pay for service plans and extra equipment, General Services spokesman Matt Bender said.

Cingular had two major challenges. First is Qualcomm, based in San Diego, holds and controls CDMA which both Verizon and Sprint use. the second one is more of a educated opionion, Representitive Darrell Issa of California is also a friend of Qualcomm's. Rep. Issa attempted to persuade lawmakers to use Qualcomms CDMA for Iraqi Wireless telecommunications.
