If i have a phone and want to conect it to my laptop for wireless internet can i get away with the 19.99 media net plan and not be charged for overage? I have been told by some that i need the 79.99 laptop connect plan and others the 39.99 PDA plan, I just want the truth.

$79.99 data connect for tethering... $19.99 for strictly handset browsing... And the $39.99 PDA connect is for devices like the TREO 650 or Siemens SX66. Personally me, if I was using the tethering I would get the PC card, rather than using my phone, but that just me. 🙂

I do know a few people with the 19.99 Media plan that are tethering to there laptop just fine. Is there a point to where they could get charged. also how would cingular know if there tethering or not it is my understading that the different data plans access certain APN's and PDA's Phones and the PC card connect only to there respected APN?

From my understanding you can't... But if they are they could possibly be under the old plans... But the down side with the Media Net versus the Data connect is the speed difference.

This is correct. You can tether and connect with Media net package, but the speed difference is pretty impressive with the Laptop Connect plan. The plans themselves connect on different ports that allow for the difference in speed. I recently attended a data programs training course and this was what we learned and proved through testing.

That plan won't work for you. And your phone is going to be really slow. If I were you I would get the PC card. It is free after rebate when you go on the 79.99 unlimited plan and is is much faster.

I have an EDGE phone and i only want to connect to check my email and browse the web a little bit. I guess if were strickly for business use and i needed to depend on it all the time the 79.99 would be fine but i dont plan on using it much.

I would only do it if you are not going to use it much.

At what point is it to much? Is there some form of data restriction on on the different plans?

Nope. I would just use it cautiously for the first month and see what the bill looks like then you will get a feel from there. It is hard to tell what you will use. It depends on what sites your looking at and stuff.

Did you know that alot of the phones have a personal email function in them... And then if you are talking about company email you could possibly access it right from your phone... Otherwise, I would probably not chance it... I would not want to say yes it will work and than have it not work (when it comes to tethering).

Wow. Well, I dont have a list that tells me how much each certain webist will cost you for X amount of min. It depends on your useage and the site, and I dont know what that stuff is. I dont think that the 19.99 plan will work, but by the way you are talking you are going to get that anyhow because that is what your friends have and that is what suits them. That is as specific as I can give you.

What you are doing is cheating the system. It is hard to predict the outcome when you are trying something that hasn't been designed.

Also, just as with any smart company, Cingular audits for loopholes like these. If they catch it you would be stuck with a very large bill.

Go ahead and try as suggested, but you can't ask us to give you the outcome with any certainty whatsoever.

You can also get latop connect with lower amounts of data for a lower cost. Then you would get the speed as well. If you really won't use it much as you say then go with the right option to not have the risk associated with the wrong option.

You can but the speed would be awfully slow(probably slower than 56K). Wouldn't even be worth the time setting up. It you need it that bad just get the laptop connecyt.

you need the package otherwise you will be billed per kb...the system may not catch it at first but it wil hit you all @ once...laptop connect runs through a different bandwidth
