o.k. just so you know a major issue with cloning is that the clone will be born with hydrocephely. (a big head)
yep sounds like an issue for a cingular forum.
(big head, like the custs, get it, huh, haha) ๐Ÿคฃ ๐Ÿคฃ ๐Ÿคฃ yes i'm tired.

everyone's a comedian.
just an fyi. when you clone the clone starts life as old as the cells were when they were "harvested". in other words you could have a two year old with arthritis.

Sort of.

If the arthritis is genetic, it may be that the clone has arthritis, but more likely, the presence of arthritis will cause complications with the physiology in a way that might mimic the biological property of an arthritic joint, but the actual malady would be much worse than simple arthritis.

Genetics 101
As you go from embryo to adult, many changes (obviously, m'kay) take place in the body. At the gentic level, some of these changes are permanent. Switches, protein genes: a host of sequences that play an active role in the cells are switched off and many more are switched on. Something like what happens when your liver and spleen emerge from your zygotic proto-human form as distinct organs, with their own properties, happen...

Which is why biologists really wanna use stem cells for such research. Since they're undifferentiated they could help move past some of those basic problems. But some bunghole president of ours (who shall remain nameless) has written off all but private funding for the type of research it would take to get some of these potentially lifesaving concepts off the ground. And we all know that no one is going to privately fund something that has such (undeserved) bad PR.

But then again this is a phone forum, not biology class, so take it to the lounge.

You just know that if Dubya came down with a nasty case of the never-get-overs and only stem cell research had a hope of saving his useless butt he'd have the okay for unlimited funding signed and off his desk so fast the ink would be smoking... ๐Ÿ™„ Until then, though, the rest of the world can just go piss up a rope with its petty little health concerns--because only undifferentiated fetal cells have rights or priorities, don'cha know... ๐Ÿ™„ ๐Ÿ˜› ๐Ÿ˜ก

Soner or later, we'll get the culturing of stem cells down pat, so Bush and anyone else can go "piss up a rope," because then stem cell research will be no more insidious than experimenting on a tumour. Until then, flame on, little pro-lifers, because I hope, one day, a bear eats you, and as you die, you'll realize that life is only precious when it serves your own interests/beliefs.

I'm so glad the rest of the world isn't on this stupid theocratic rampage the US is promulgating... I keep expecting Nehemiah Scudder to show up on Leno and keep an overnight bag packed for just such eventualities... Oh, and a cyber nickel for anyone who correctly identifies the literary reference in this post! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Robert Heinlein, in his Future History books, postulated a scenario in which a narrow minded totalitarian religious bigot assumes control of the government of the US via a grass roots support of his Xtian agenda and then imposes martial law. All civil rights rescinded and partial rights allocated along strict Levitican lines (i.e., only white men had any power, say or upward mobility, everyone else is a serf or breeding stock and Taliban level "moral" codes strictly enforced.) Hilarity ensued... and many people ended up dying to make it all stop... ๐Ÿ™„ Used to seem very far fetched to me, but not so much any more. ๐Ÿ‘ฟ

Yes it is, but your education is sorely lacking! Get thee hence to the bookstore and acquire forthwith a nice broad selection of titles from the Master, for your brain will thank you! ๐Ÿคฃ

If Heinlein is good for you, then you must involve yourself with the Ender and Shadow series from Orson Scott Card

Mmmmm, Scott Card *drool*

Have every title by Card, and most are first edition hardcovers--you don't want to get me started on "my SF library is bigger than yours" because I tend to win... a LOT! ๐Ÿ˜‰

John Varley, Spider Robinson and Harlan Ellison are also highly recommended... ๐Ÿ˜Ž

See, I'm not a big SF person. I just appreciate quality SF. Scott Card, Asimov (every so often) and Heinlein are among them, but there are others that I don't remember as well. I REALLY like Stephen Baxter though, the man is a SF wizard

Who says stem cell research isn't in full effect? It's getting funding from somewhere.

Yeah, AP article today says Dubya is trying to find some way to fund stem cell research as long as it do...
