Well, in order to do that, according to cingular, your actually supposed to have one of the Laptop Connect plans. (You can find them on the website) I've heard that some people have got it to work using their media net connection, but cingular says you need a laptop connect plan.

No if he has a pc card he would need that laptop connect plan. He can connect using his phone.

basicly you can do it both ways. although going through media net is alot slower and you wont get any help from cingular to hook it up because technicallly you need a laptop connect package. I've also had to add a $3.99 access feature to get it to work for people. Not realy sure what it does but i tried it for a friend and it seemed allow the connection.

Also if you are going to try to do it via bluetooth good luck. I had a customer hounding me for weeks because he couldn't figure it out and reps don't make house calls!

external data and internal data i,e media net. will charge differently on your account. so the unlimited media net package will not work if you teather your device to your pc. You would need a DATA package or you will be subjected to .01c per kilo. if you connect via a data cable i have heard there are ways around it however considering what i have heard i would not attempt it. I connect my v551 to my dell axim50v pda and have a 5meg 19.99 data package. to connect via BT you need the DATA dept or as its called sometimes the blackberry dept and get the int string to enter into the pc to get it to work. hope this helps a little. 🙂

Ive gotten it to work with my Media Net plan and it works fine. Although Im thinking with a laptop connect plan it'd be faster? I heard with an actual EDGE card its faster, but who knows, I dont! 😎

I do know that if you get the laptop connect, aka dataconnect, you get to use a cingular provided software as your homepage...stuff that's supposed to come with the pc card.

Nope...can't afford it...I know they're addictive though. I've got a home-made PC. If I had the money though I'd so get an Imac. Though I do have a Shuffle...which I've replaced with my Audiovox 5600.

By the way by doing it your way you will pay tethering rates. Before you say well its unlimited so i won't or i called up and they said i won't- It does not matter you will still be charged. The package you pay for gives you unlimited data usage on your handset. That means you can use your handset and surf till your hearts content on your phone, by tethering it to your pc, you are not surfing it on your phone you are in fact tethering the internet to your pc to surf from your pc.

I'll throw my two cents into the speculation mix here: it's all about the isp. There's actually a feature in the billing system called a dataconnect ISP. It's a free feature, and I've actually added it to customer's accounts as a trouble shooting technique when they can't connect to the wireless internet. Gets them working every time. I highly suspect that this is the magic key to getting something like this to work. It's doubtful you'll be able to get a rep to add it though...let alone if you try to request it. Again, this is technically speculation amongst all others, so take it with a grain of salt.

Ok....marcus??? You do not know what the hell you are talking about. Tier II support told me SPECIFICALLY..and I quote..."To use a mobile device as a tether (wired or bluetooth), cingular states that you SHOULD be on a laptop connect plan." He also stated that he has heard of people getting it to work via media net, but cingular will not help you do it. They will tell you to sign for a laptop connect package.

You are just confirming what I said. I said that you can do it with the medianet but it is going to be slow. You will not get edge speeds that way.

Cingular helped me teather my phone to my laptop to an extent, when the lady didnt know what more to do she transferred me over to Sony Ericsson 😁 They got me workin' in a jiffy, all I had to do was download some modem scripts for my Mac from this website that was given to me by Cingular and Sony Ericsson.

I've been teathering ever since (7 months ago) and havent been charged an extra cent 😁
