Gait vs GSM

I currently have a gait phone with a preferred nation plan. I need to increase my minutes. Since Pref Nat is no longer available where I live, CS says that I need to go on a Gait Nation plan. The increase in cost is significant! I can upgrade to a gsm phone, but I don't know how much coverage area I'm truly going to lose. Looking at the maps, it looks like I'd lose out quite a bit while traveling.

What happens if I upgrade to a gsm phone, go on a gsm national plan, and switch my sim card when I'm out of gsm range? Will the gait phone pick up other signals? Will I be charged for roaming?

I don't want to spend the extra money to get the national gait plan, but if it's worth the difference I might have to just do it! Is there any word on...

You definitely will be losing coverage by upgrading to a GSM phone, but in all actuality how often to you travel to remote rural areas of the country? And yes if you do upgrade to GSM, and then place your sim in the GAIT phone you have, it will work, and you will have roaming charges. Everyone looks at the GSM and GAIT maps and thinks that they are losing alot, which is not true. The areas that are not currently covered by Cingular or their GSM roaming partners are rairly traveled by, I would say (90-95%), of customers. If you actually sit down with a Cingular Nation GSM map, and mark all the places you go, have gone, and where you plan on traveling to...You will see that GSM will more than likely cover your needs.

if you were to stick your GSM sim into a GAIT phone you can use it, but once your out of the GSM serivce area only 911 will work. you wont be able to make normal/roaming calls.

I was under the impression from my indirect sales rep that the customer could use the GAIT phone and roam. If she miss lead me, then I appologize for posting that incorrectly.

if your on GAIT plan you will, but if your on strickly GSM you wont be able to. reason is when you go off the network and you try to roam, the phone will switch to TDMA. When its on TDMA the tower is gonna use the ESN number to identify you for billing. if your on a gsm plan you dont use ESN's, so the tower wont authorize you for calls.

I VOTE GSM...IF YOU LOOK AT OUR MAP IN MOST PLACES YOU MAY TRAVEL THAT WE DONT OFFER GSM SERVICE ONE OF OUR PARTNERS DOES...PLUS WITH THE NEW GSM NATION PLANS YOU GET NATIONWIDE MOBILE TO MOBILE...AND NATIONWIDE NIGHTS AND WEEKS AND USUALLY MORE MINUTES THAT YOU WOULD GET WITH A GAIT PLAN....WORST THING YOU GET A GSM PHONE...HAVE 15 DAYS TO USE IT...IF YOU ARENT GETTING THE COVERAGE YOU THINK YOU SHOULD GET...RETURN IT...OUR NEW TRUE NATION PLANS CANT BE BEAT...YOU GET A SIGNAL...NO ROAMING...PLUS ALL YOUR FEATURES STILL WORK...

Unfortunately, the GSM nation plan doesn't look very good in VT, NH, or Maine. My daughter is getting ready for college and is looking hard at one in Maine. I'm worried that her trip to and from school would have very little coverage. Any word on if service in those states are going to be increasing???
These regions are the only thing that's making me think of paying for the more expensive GAIT plan.

Any word about any new plans coming out soon? I need to change within the next 2 months or my rollover minutes are going to be used up.

remember, our GSM coverage map only shows OUR network coverage, and not anyone else's. since there is no roaming, you might pick up another carrier's signal and the phone would work fine under our current GSM nation plan. once Cingular's buyout of ATTW is complete, and their network is assimil...

We ARE building in New Hampshire, through an existing deal with ATTWS, along major highways.

I've heard that we have plans for Maine (my family is up there), but no actual information has gotten to me yet.

What plan are you on now? What parts of Maine and New Hampshire do you need? Have you looked at the New England GSM plan maps?

I expect new maps in June, indicating then-current coverage as well as planned coverage for September. I expect plan tweaks well before that. Coverage advances with the network, plans are driven by the market. Other tha...

if u switch sim from gsm phone on gsm nation to gait phone on gsm nation plan and you use it outside of a gsm area you will be charged for roaming. the reason for that is how the codes are setup with the price plan in the billing system
