Verizon Wireless not #1 anymore. Or are they?

Well everyone has heard about Cingular and Att Ws merging to become the biggest cellular company in the US. But I want to clear up a few things. People may be informed. Cingular may have more customer than Verizon, but will their coverage area be bigger? Humm.. My answer is NO!!!!!!!!! Even though Cingular will be bigger than Verizon Wireless (customer wise and maybe revenue wise), Verizon Wireless will still hold there reputation of having the largest coverage area in America. True Cingular Wireless may have a bigger coverage area, but it just wont be big enough to to take Verizon's reputation. When people say largest, they mean in customers and revenues not coverage area. So all of you who want a company that will work in most places you w...

That's not exatcly true. Cingular's GSM network has grown considerably in the year alone. No other company has but up that much growth in such a short period of time. At the rate Cingular is growing and with the buyout of AT&T, their network will be larger that Verizon's be 2006. Their not that far behind now. If you could see Cingular's digital coverage over Verizon digital coverage, you would understand.

We must be looking at two different coverage maps, because Cingular's existing GSM coverage map that is on their website has MANY dead spots - much more than VZW. I have a phone with both companies. My Cingular plan is still on the TDMA network specifically because if I switched to GS...

With the acquisition of ATTW, (once it is officially complete)Cingular's network will be larger than Verizon's.

Also, the coverage map that is shown as "Cingular's Network" is just that. That doesnt mean there are other networks in place with smaller, regional companies. With the Nation plan, as long as you are getting a signal, the phone will work at no extra charge since there is no roaming.

we'll see whose network is bigger come a year from now.

So all of you who want a company that will work in most places you would probably travel, You may want to choose Verizon.

i think most of us don't want to be a part of the nations largest analog service, so we won't be going to vzw anytime soon, if ever.

Well I LIKE having Digital coverage everywhere in my state and maybe 1-2 dropped calls a month. My friend who is on the almighty GSM network cant get service in his house on the freeway in places and various places in our major metro market. I never even hit analog and i have a tri mode phone with Verizon.

Well, you proved one thing.
That it works good in the specific city/area YOU live in, which also just goes to show that when it all comes down to it, most people care about it working near where they live not out in B-F-E.

It cracks me up that in order to back up how great the coverage is "everywhere" you see the "mine works in my house but my friends doesn't" defense. BFD, there have been some times were I experienced the opposite. I guess by your logic that must mean Verizon coverage must suck.

I was a Verizon customer. 🤭 (Hey, I was young and foolish...)

Service in my area was okay, and I found myself resenting each call to customer service.

Then I discovered Roaming Charges. 😲

Once I'd paid my way out of that, I decided to try for a phone company that would be easier to deal with. That orange 'splat' guy looked fun, plans were okay, and I could get a nifty StarTac phone.

Service is the same or better (dead spots are in slightly different locations), and the people are easy to deal with. Now I sell them.

See? Happily...

According to Feb. Consumer Reports, Verizon is still #1 and not about to be thrown off the thrown by anyone any time soon. They have the largest network, and employ some of the latest technology. They also have the lowest turnover rate of any carrier at 25%. Cingular has the second highest at 35%. With cingulars upgrade to the GSM network last fall, alot of customers are finding that their new GSM phones are not compatable on the old TDMA networks and are dumping them. Although there are new phones on the market that are GSM/TDMA, when the system was first introduced, all of the GSM phones were strictly that, GSM. Cingular is also known for not developing thier own networks. They seem to use a "Buy what we dont have" by buying out oth...

I work for cingular wireless. Some of your points are valid. I admit when cingular first converted to GSM we were not completely prepared for the conversion. It was rough but I think that things are a lot better now. Billing issues are across the board every cell phone company has them. There are no perfect billing systems if there were everyone would have one one. the GSM/TDMA phones have always been available since GSM was launched. that is a not a fair criticism. Poor customer service was in consumer reports as a downfall of cingular but the scores were inconsistant. Not to Dis Verizon because they are a good company but say things that are not true about cingular. AT&T's ntwork has not grown faster than cingular's AT&T and cingular have ...

80% of Verizon Wireless network is digital. So you will probably be in their digital coverage more than you being in area where theres no digital and but analog service. Without Verizon's Analog service, Verizon Wireless still would have a bigger coverage area than Cingular and Att combined. Verizon Covers 95% of the US. Att and Cingular together probably wouldn't make 70% of the US. I'm looking at the coverage map now. Most of the areas att have coverage, Cingular has coverage too. Plus, in the areas that Verizon has analog and no digital coverage - 9 times out of 10, Cingular and Att doesn't have NO coverage in the area. I think I would rather have Analog coverage than having NO coverage. Actually, I think anyone would agree on that. Someo...

VZW's network is only about 5% analog and decreasing all the time. So what are you talking about?? The past two years VZW has spent 4 billion dollars each year on network upgrades alone. This year the spending is going to be at least 5 billion on the network alone. Because VZW is the best and is committed to staying that best.
