Samsung Mythic without a data plan?

Time to upgrade the family phones and I was looking at either the Mythic or the Sunburst. On the AT&T website it says that a data plan is required. I stroll into the local Radio Shack to see the phones before buying and the guy tells me it is automatically required on the website but they can do it in store without adding any data plans. Sounds sketchy.

I go into the AT&T store and the girl tells me the same thing. Still concerned, but may give it a shot.

My question is, if I can get the phones without adding the plans, will AT&T try and automatically add this to my bill down the road? I've heard this is standard practice on the "smart phones", but haven't heard about it on the "dumb phones".

I rarely ever access the internet a...

The rebate for the Samsung Mythic does require the unlimited messaging, unlimited family messaging, or some type of data feature. I would wait to buy it until the 25th, as the phone price drops $50. It doesn't bother me that you don't need data, you just wont get the $50 rebate.

If you would like a Mythic, PM me. At&t will not attach anything to your bill in regards to data.

Just an FYI I have the mythic and for being a "dumb phone" it is pretty feature rich! enjoy!

Thanks for that. That's what it sounds like, except for a few low reviews (compared to plenty of high reviews) that say the web browser locks up occasionally and a couple other minor "nitpicking" issues.

I think a lot of those low reviews are from those that are trying to compare something like this to an iphone, which it clearly isn't.

Will,

My mom wants a touchscreen...

Does this apply to any phone that has a rebate and requires a messaging plan?

What other phones are this way?

Delta,

All messaging phones with QWERTY keypads or touch screens, require you add or have unimited text or data. It isn't manditory, just a disqualifier for the rebates.

I PM'ed you back.

"salespeople are making is sound like they are doing you a favor!" That's the same thing I thought after speaking with the second one.

Assuming one didn't know about the requirements, I'm still uncertain how they could force somebody to get a data plan if that's not what they agreed to when they got the phone.

Akin to if someone sold a smartphone and it is automatically applied whether the salesperson told the custopmer about it or not.
There is no mention of it *yet* on the Customer Service Summary that goes out with every customer. THAT is when it's official.

But they are forcing it if you buy on the internet, correct?

yeah, you have to select and add the data/messaging plan.

the only difference is they are not enforcing it *right now* in the same way as smartphones. if you remove it today, it will not automatically be re-added like a smartphone data plan will be re-added automatically.

this could change next week? who knows?

Is the nokia surge considered a smartphone and are there any hardfast rules as to how to differentiate a smartphone from a non smartphone? like the propel is a smartphone but the impression is not... 😕
...

Jul 16, 2010, 12:45 PM
yeah. surge is a smartphone. (minimum $15 data plan *is* enforced. if the device has a full HTML browser and runs windows, Symbian, Palm, Blackberry, or Apple OS, then its a smartphone. the website will list what is required.

you realize this may all change at any time, right? (they may begin enforcement tomorrow or next week)

The Surge is a smartphone. The Propel and Impression are not. The Propel Pro on the other hand would be a smartphone but I don't think that AT&T is still offering that. Smartphones would have a full HTML browser.

Sweet deal. Yeah I really like the Samsung touch screen messaging phones I would keep my Eternity if it had more smartphone abilitys but alas it is still a dumbphone. Hope she enjoys the new phone.

One other thing though. You might want to consider picking up the screen covers for her because my Eternity has a tendency to get scratched easily.
