Cingular outage in Idaho
"A technical failure at a Cingular Wireless switching station in southwest Idaho left an undetermined number of the company's cellular customers in Boise, Nampa and Mountain Home without service for about three hours Monday.
Cingular spokeswoman Anne Marshall said technicians in three states finally managed to restore service about 5:30 p.m.
Marshall said no other customers in Idaho were affected. She declined to say how many customers in the Treasure Valley lost their cell phone service.
"It goes without saying that we apologize to our Idaho customers for any inconvenience," Marshall said.

ooo defensive are we? i was just asking a question. if you cant deal with it, dont answer it.
it was an Innocent question.
nextel18 said:No need to laugh at me. While Nextel was upgrading, a lot of subscribers felt that their service degraded considerably. There's 242,000 posters on HoFo, so I take their opinions seriously.
widen wont effect subscribers. lol..
nextel18 said:Yeah, well...according to MarkF and others, the WiDen upgrade wreaked a little havoc with people's service while it was being installed. Quite a few people complained about this on HoFo's Nextel forum.
not with WIDEN sorry. the service wouldnt be degrading becuase of WIDEN, it would increase but it increases bandwidth, and same goes with the 6:1 voice coder.

Nextel processed more than 14 billion Florida walkie-talkie calls during 2004.

very interesting.
anyway, everyone has learned from that and now they do things so that it wont happen again.
nextel18 said:
regardless, nextel has the off network push to talk capability
Off network...for what 3 to 5 miles if the conditions are perfect? Oh please, I'm in a 2500 square mile county and off network won't help the least bit.
Yes all the carriers learned something, but no matter how well you build it, mother nature will find a way to mess it up.
nextel18 said:
well, thats life. things happen.
Yeah, and considering me and four other guys could maintain the entire nextel network, what are so proud of?
nextel18 said:Okay. So please explain to me the rash of service degredation that everybody was complaining about for a few months last year in the Nextel forum? Were they deluded or lying? There were far too many angry people for me to call liars, and it happened as Nextel was rolling out the WiDen upgrade. Geeze, man...that's all I'm saying.
no, thats not true. widen wouldnt effect subscribers what-so-ever. the 6:1 voice coder, however, could effect subscribers, but not that much. actually both enhance the bandwidth between and on the cell sites. there wouldnt be any havoc, so markf and hofo are wrong.

first off i am not calling anyone names. so lets get that across. second, when you upgrade widen and 6:1 voice coder on the cell sites, they usually do it at night or the weekends where no one uses their phone and they do the upgrades very slowly so that it doesnt interupt service. the only way there could be a big problem in that area or areas would be that something went wrong when they uploaded the software onto the t1 and then onto the cell site. (but i dont see that happening) another problem could be that there were a lot of people who were subscribing to a data plan which would take up bandwidth which could create a backlog. i doubt that would happen either, becuase nextel is very careful when they u

nextel18 said:Well, I didn't make up the thousands of angry posters on HoFo, I assure you of that.
no.. i am saying the way that nextel does things with slowly upgrading software onto the towers and the database wouldnt cause a problem. again, widen and 6:1 enhance bandwidth and call capacity on those cell sites. it could be for another seperate reason, but i was in contact with a lot of RF people especially in my area and others, saying there are no problems. i didnt experience any problem with my data or voice solutions and same with my customers, and friends who i contacted across the nation via dc.
nextel18 said:Look. You may be right about it being something else. I'm just saying it happened nationwide and it occurred during the upgrade.
well, i dont care if you made it up or not, the fact is that it doesnt make sense. its just like saying if a company adds capacity to that tower would it cause a problem or not? its an obvious answer and the same goes with upgrades to both widen and 6:1.
nextel18 said:Fine. I imagined the entire thing, or better yet I lied right to your face. Sorry about that.
i doubt it. if it happened nationwide, i would have felt it and same with my friends from coast to coast and the RF people who i talk to would tell me that too, however, i didnt experience anything nor did my RF people tell me about that. sorry.
nextel18 said:ANY time a carrier makes changes to a network there's the possibility problems may occur.
i am not calling you any times. i am just stating the facts. why would enhancing a network and the cell sites effect the subscriber/consumers in a negative way? it doesnt make sense.
nextel18 said:Of course...because Nextel would never have network problems that would lead to degredation of service. It's unheard of. C'mon man, cut me a little slack here. Whether or not it was caused by the WiDen upgrade, for a few months people were complaining. I didn't imagine this. Just because you didn't experience problems doesn't mean other people didn't.
but not on this level.
the merger wouldnt or shouldnt cause this many of problems, unless they dont plan it correctly.
nextel18 said:That's just friggin' rude, man. And uncalled for.
no problem, and thats well said, however, i stated that personal experience does mean nothing. therefore what much said about those hofo people mean nothing. (i spoke with the RF people and nextel and etc..)
nextel18 said:You dismissed what I said by saying "So what Much said meant nothing". How is that NOT rude?
how was that rude?
nextel18 said:We'll see what a certain someone says about that.
its not rude. . that simple!

From what I've read service has returned to normal within the last couple of months. I'm done with you on this subject. Period.
personal experiences mean nothing, so therefore his statement about those hofonians were all wrong then(based on what you said and what i said). also i checked with my RF people WHO DESIGN the software and upgrade it into the t1 then into the cell site tell me that there were no outages with the whole implementation of the upgrades. also nextel confirmed the same thing.
nextel18 said:What do you mean personal experiences mean nothing? Do you have any idea how many people were complaining about Nextel's service during those months? Were they making it up?

yep personal experience means nothing. i look at nationwide. yea they were. the other people werent effected by it and the RF people told me that and same with nextel.
so who to belive? the people who actually monitor the network on a daily basis or those 150k people? hmm.
nextel18 said:The way you argue, it's like you refuse to believe it. Like it couldn't happen. Nextel's network is certainly not infallible.

If you're going to keep on arguing with me, just call me a liar and we'll forget it.
yep. so those people who were saying that they had problems probably had problems with a crowded cell site which would be impossible if the 6:1 and widen was implemented on those cell sites.

bahahahahah. 6:1 and widen improves poor signal. service where services was availble has nothing to do with the upgrade. direct connect problems have nothing to do with the upgrades since dc already has the 6:1 voice coder on it and since DC only uses a very small portion of bandwidth.

(its not aimed at you by the way)
Dealing in customer service you know, to point out the problem will make people upset.
To point out the problem with various solutions will provide a different response.
For example: "Cingular's CHURN is horrible!"
Yes, we know that, and it is fact. But your first response will be "Our churn has dropped for two Qtr's straight now blah blah blah..."
A better approach would have been: "Cingular's CHURN has always been really low, good thing to see though they've dropped CHURN for two qtrs straight."
Or however it's worded... Negative posts will recieve negative responses.
Even if you did not mean it to come out as Negative... it's percieved negatively because of the words used.
Keep digging.
so sad.
Actually I just can't figure out why an RF engineer from Nextel, someone not employed by you and not allowed to give you proprietary network information talks to you on a weekly basis. Actually I do get it now, considering your 3 monkeys approach to Nextel's system. They are probably members here and love knowing they can feed you misinformation and it immediately hits this board.
Either way, your opinions on this and most every other matter here are WITHOUT logical basis so I am going to point that out to those who may be of interest. As a former Nextel Authorized representive I know first hand your logic is without basis.
Hope that helps...
becuase i ask them, and they tell me. they know me long enough to trust me.

Your notion that Nextel absolutely positively could not have experienced any service issue with an upgrade. That is just simply w/o logic based on the history of the wireless communications industry as a whole.
Second, all companies deploy regional engineering departments. Even if your engineer "buddies" are saying all is good locally, your argument is worthless because Nextel has hundreds of other network offices that probably do not funnel every service issue through "your guys" so that they could then tell you.

nextel18 said:This was hundreds and hundreds of people posting over a few month period. They ALL made it up? These are loyal Nextel subscribers. Wouldn't you listen to them?
probably that they have nothing else to do or to say so they complain.
nextel18 said:But this wasn't one individual. This was hundreds, maybe even thousands of posters. HoFo has 242,000 members...some of those folks complaining doesn't make you say "I guess something could have happened with service".
i already explained my view. i dont care what individuals think.
actually it doesnt. everyone on that site complains about every carrier regardless.
nextel18 said:Hey. Just listen for a second. I'm talking about a specific time period where all of a sudden Nextel's quality of service took a dive in certain areas. People started posting about it. It occured for a few months and then it stopped. I'm not talking about this with you any longer as you shoot every theory I have down. You are incapable of having a friendly, informed conversation with anyone. This is why everyone in this forum would like to see you removed from the site forever.
so they have 242k members most of them are complaining about the services anyway.
actually it doesnt. everyone on that site complains about every carrier regardless.
i can understand if many people were buying services and there were many additions in that area would cause problems, but the 6:1 or widen upgrade WOULDNT have cuased these problems.

ooo defensive are we? i was just asking a question. if you cant deal with it, dont answer it.
it was an Innocent question.
You don't have innocent questions.
You said yourself you have loaded questions.
Must be a lack of self esteem that makes you do what you do.
i have high self esteem my friend.

And as is common, paranoia follows his delusions because he thinks everyone here just wants to call him names and that all his intentions are noble.
I have tried to browse through his posts, avoiding the naner, naner, your stupid posts and looking for signs of actual intelligence. I can find none. Perhaps th...

There is a great site on the net where you can get .wmv files of different quotes from the movie. VERY funny.

Okay, I'll bite--what's the movie? Doesn't ring any bells with me, and that's kind of unusual...

I've put a couple of quotes in at the bottom but so far you are the first to know what they are from :-)

nextel18 said:So, a ridiculously large wireless network should never have any outages? You do realize it's a thing built and maintained by humans right?
not sure. it doesnt matter how many people. and even if they only have 30 people there should be no outages.
DDA said:That would actually be pretty cool.
Humans maintain cell towers?!? I thought cingular was the Empire and had droids maintain everything!! [/sarcasm]
Obviously this guy has nothing to do, ever, except sit around and post. No job, no significant other, no life... He's probably Googling to get some other info about Nextel and/or Cingular so he could either fancy us with it or post something negative about Cingular in some sort of attempt to rub it in everyones face, alot like with this article.

Exactly. I grew up in a old homesteader's log cabin. We got our water out of the creek by our house, used a wood stove for heating and cooking, and oil lamps for lighting. We did have electricity (sometimes), but you couldn't rely on it. Coming from that background - I find it hilarious when people freak out about outages or not having a cell phone. They are a fairly recent innovation - people got a long for how long without them? I'm all for new technology - but people (particularly Americans) need to keep things in perspective.

I hear ya--I live in the NW myself and I just laugh my butt off at all the irate, cranky people who freak out whenever they can't make a call RIGHT THIS MINUTE... Sheesh, people, take a chill pill, stuff happens... Up here, if you, your family and the pets are still alive and your house has a roof, walls and floor, there's not much else to get p.o.'d over, and we're definitely a LOT more self reliant than most people...

It's what people used to have before they invented cell phones... 😛
p.s. we did have a 'refrigerator' You would just put things that you wanted to stay cold outside (during the eight months of winter that we had) or in the creek (which stayed a balmy 35 degrees year round).
elihuspeaks said:Balmy? Balmy?!! That's "Holy Crap!" cold to this South Florida boy.
. . . and it generally involved carrying a survival pack in the back of your car, a high powered rifle and a sleeping bag . . . you know, they still don't have cell phones were I grew up at, so things are pretty much the same there!

No, he called me up from a payphone at the nearest freeway exit and told me about it--bet it would have sounded darned cool, though! Kinda "Fail Safe" sort of thing I suppose... 🤣

What a schmuck! Yeah, I worked at a place that had that same policy and it was HORRIBLE! We couldn't hang up on perverts or the incorrigibly abusive, and we had one guy who called in regularly from a mental ward and wanted us to send him some Pepsi and chips--we got to where we'd just promise him anything to get him off the phone!

I rarely get time to post anymore. It usually happens in spurts. I recently got married, got promoted twice, and I am still going to school. 😲
I'm just a busy guy. I have to run 4 stores now and it's very time consuming as well.
I still post though... just not nearly as much.

all that effort... so little reward.
