"A technical failure at a Cingular Wireless switching station in southwest Idaho left an undetermined number of the company's cellular customers in Boise, Nampa and Mountain Home without service for about three hours Monday.

Cingular spokeswoman Anne Marshall said technicians in three states finally managed to restore service about 5:30 p.m.

Marshall said no other customers in Idaho were affected. She declined to say how many customers in the Treasure Valley lost their cell phone service.

"It goes without saying that we apologize to our Idaho customers for any inconvenience," Marshall said.

What kind of crazy talk is that, that is like saying we won't have power outages or car accidents or other things that "just happen" be resonable, plus I would love to see Nextel acctually have service in some areas, like the places we had an outage in.......so give me a break...... 🙄

He/she wasn't getting defensive. He/she was just pointing out that with any large, complex, man-made construct, you're going to have problems here and there. You don't recall the HoFo Nextel forum exploding with angry subscribers while Nextel was upgrading to WiDen?

Yeah, well...according to MarkF and others, the WiDen upgrade wreaked a little havoc with people's service while it was being installed. Quite a few people complained about this on HoFo's Nextel forum.

regardless, nextel has the off network push to talk capability and they spent around 153 million in 2004 and will spend 230 million this year.

http://phx.corporate-ir.net/phoenix.zhtml?c=63347&p= ... »

"Nextel processed 36 percent more walkie-talkie and cellular calls in Florida in 2004 when compared to 2003.
Nextel processed more than 14 billion Florida walkie-talkie calls during 2004.
Nextel processed more than 6 billion Florida cellular calls during 2004. "

very interesting.

anyway, everyone has learned from that and now they do things so that it wont happen again.

Off network...for what 3 to 5 miles if the conditions are perfect? Oh please, I'm in a 2500 square mile county and off network won't help the least bit.

Yes all the carriers learned something, but no matter how well you build it, mother nature will find a way to mess it up.

Okay. So please explain to me the rash of service degredation that everybody was complaining about for a few months last year in the Nextel forum? Were they deluded or lying? first off i am not calling anyone names. so lets get that across. second, when you upgrade widen and 6:1 voice coder on the cell sites, they usually do it at night or the weekends where no one uses their phone and they do the upgrades very slowly so that it doesnt interupt service. the only way there could be a big problem in that area or areas would be that something went wrong when they uploaded the software onto the t1 and then onto the cell site. (but i dont see that happening) another problem could be that there were a lot of people who were subscribing to a data plan which would take up bandwidth which could create a backlog. i doubt that would happen either, becuase nextel is very careful when they upgrade software and things of that ...

I know... The problem is the wording.

Dealing in customer service you know, to point out the problem will make people upset.

To point out the problem with various solutions will provide a different response.

For example: "Cingular's CHURN is horrible!"

Yes, we know that, and it is fact. But your first response will be "Our churn has dropped for two Qtr's straight now blah blah blah..."

A better approach would have been: "Cingular's CHURN has always been really low, good thing to see though they've dropped CHURN for two qtrs straight."

Or however it's worded... Negative posts will recieve negative responses.

Even if you did not mean it to come out as Negative... it's percieved negatively because of the words used.

Actually I do get it now, considering your 3 monkeys approach to Nextel's system. They are probably members here and love knowing they can feed you misinformation and it immediately hits this board.

Either way, your opinions on this and most every other matter here are WITHOUT logical basis so I am going to point that out to those who may be of interest. As a former Nextel Authorized representive I know first hand your logic is without basis.

Ok,

Your notion that Nextel absolutely positively could not have experienced any service issue with an upgrade. That is just simply w/o logic based on the history of the wireless communications industry as a whole.

Second, all companies deploy regional engineering departments. Even if your engineer "buddies" are saying all is good locally, your argument is worthless because Nextel has hundreds of other network offices that probably do not funnel every service issue through "your guys" so that they could then tell you.

You see, this is where you shoot yourself in the foot. You are digging in your heels on something that just doesn't have factual backing. If you aren't making up these phantom engineer buddies and they actually tol...

Hey. Just listen for a second. I'm talking about a specific time period where all of a sudden Nextel's quality of service took a dive in certain areas. People started posting about it. It occured for a few months and then it stopped. I'm not talking about this with you any longer as you shoot every theory I have down. You are incapable of having a friendly, informed conversation with anyone. This is why everyone in this forum would like to see you removed from the site forever.

The reason is not the merger but also the GSM overlay sometimes outages are planned. To allow Cingular to fix issues with the GSM overlay in certain markets. Especially in areas that are known trouble spots. I am determined to educate u on Cingular besides what u read in newsletters. Cingular would probly not have as many outages if we did not have two networks to support GSM and TDMA. Verizon just does not face the same issues. Verizon having only one technology and just having to worry about network upgrades has given them a huge headstart. GSM and TDMA are totally different technologies. California is completly GSM except for the blue side that is a mixed market of both techs.

Okay . . . I can see by the posts above that most, if not all of you have never been to Boise. I used to live in Idaho (down by Twin Falls though) and my sister lived for a while in Nampa. Boise is actually a pretty good sized city (by Northwestern standards that is), as is Nampa - and a very nice place to live at that. The thing about the Inland Northwest though - is that we have outages ALL THE TIME! Whenever we get a lot of snow the networks all go down because everyone is trying to use their phones at the same time. We also lose power periodically (especially in the winter or during thunderstorms) - sometimes for days at a time. People up here are used to it and are able to continue their daily lives as normal, because they still kn...
