iPhone without data plan

Do you know if it is possible, or will be possible in the future, to be able to get an iPhone without a data plan. I can't really justify paying an additional $30/month for data that I'd hardly use anyway. My family has all data blocked at the moment. I want an iPhone for the iPod and phone functionality in one device. Internet via WiFi only.

My suggestion then would be to get an iTouch. The iPhone is more than likely never going to available without any type data package. That will not change, even if the iPhone is released to other carriers. The data package is too much of a cash cow for both the carrier and Apple.

That kind of defeats the point. I already have an iPod and a regular phone. I don't want to have two different devices.

Then you're paying for data.

There is always a tradeoff for convenience

It's $1 a day.

I have a droid, so it's a little differently.. but seriously, I use it for EVERYTHING (radio, news reader, ebook reader, podcaster, etc) and being locked down to only wifi spots would suck

there is no way u could get the iphone without a data plan. there is just too much u can do with it that u would need data. even if they did only work at wifi spots, you wouldnt be able to use it when you wanted to and you would have to rely on someone else's wifi connection and not everyone has one. what your gonna stay at starbucks all day? 🤨

It's called an iPod touch + any other phone AT&T has that doesn't require data.

If you have an iPhone with a phone number activated... you have a $30/month fee.

Point and simple.

I get the point...if people want data let them get it. But it shouldn't be crammed down people's throats if they don't use it/don't want it. Regardless of what phone it is.

I didn't even read the other reply... funny that he basically said the same thing.

As far as this reply... Majority of people have voted with their wallets... and required data on smart-phones is here to say.

*IF* it had flopped upon announcement, we'd be in a different spot.

*BUT* millions of iPhone users can't be wrong.

I think that there should be an option for a smart-phone without data... the problem is what's the motivation? As the other posters have stated, their is simply to many reasons to want data everywhere - for users AND carriers.

Without the data charges, less of the phone would be subsidized, thus the purchase price would be higher, thus less people would buy it to start with...

The economics simply aren't t...

It is not being crammed down your throat. No one is forcing you to buy an iPhone. But the simple fact of the matter is that, if you want an iPhone, you must have a data plan. If you do not want the data plan, do not get an iPhone.

Well if you don't want to pay $30.00 then don't get it.

just out of curiousity, and I promise i'm not being malicious or snotty, but why do you want an iPhone without the data plan?

Is it because it is a brand named phone?

Buy an iPhone and take it to T-Mobile it will work without a data plan as long as you don't set one up to be used on it

If there was T-Mobile in our area, I would have done that a long time ago. Unfortunately, our only decent choice is AT&T. We do have one other regional GSM provider, but they don't have any nationwide plans and the coverage is lackluster compared to AT&T.

why would you want a smartphone that uses the internet and email...and not use it the way it was designed??

that's like buying a hammer, and using it as a paper weight! it works, but why use a hammer for a paper weight when i can use an actual paper weight?

if you get an internet/smartphone and don't want internet, then you don't need that phone. get a basic phone or a messaging phone if that's all you need one for.

Basically the Iphone is only available with a data plan; that was the rule for Iphones even before it was required on smartphones. The way apple sees it if you want an Iphone you want the data plan to access all of their apps.

If you want your phone to serve as your music player, check out the Samsung mythic. No required data plan, apps are available if you do get data, it doesn't use a propietary headphone jack so your existing headphones will work, the touchflo is very similar to an Iphone, expandable memory with a microSD card. So it won't sync to Itunes; big deal. Sideload your music instead, it takes two extra clicks.

There are some other options that are available as well that is just a personal favorite. But as long as you *wan...
