OK, so if I were to get an unlocked phone, what would be the big differences (if it was originally purchased from the manufacturer or something and not a carrier)? I would assume it won't have the "cingular stuff" preloaded on it...but will the reception and stuff be better if I just get a regular locked one? And to go further, if I get an unlocked Cingular phone, does that mean it still has the "Cingular stuff" on it but i can just activate it on other carriers network (assuming that it is a quad-band GSM phone)?
In other words (Gosh, it sounds so complicated when I typed it all out), am I better off getting a locked or unlocked phone (off of ebay or something) if I only want to use Cingular?
...
You need to keep in mind that Cingular uses the 850/1900 frequency. If you are in an area which uses 850, your phone may not be of any use. Cingular & ATTWS were the only companies to use this with GSM. Make sure you buy a phone with the 850 or you could be screwed.

buy unlocked, if you travel international cingular will rape you with a sandpaper condom on the rates, then when you realize how much you hate cingular you can leave at any time because you won't have a contract (just have to pay for the SIM at the time of activation) 😁
...
Good advice@ Oh, and good metaphor too!! 🤣 😁 😉

You know, i just did a lookup on Sprint, Nextel, and VZW. Couldn't find any rates on Nextel, Sprints were very similar to CW, and VZW only allows roaming in the below countries... It is 69 CPM, but very limited.
Verizon Wireless customers can use their tri-mode or all digital handsets to make and receive calls in:
Bermuda
Canada
China
Dominican Republic
Israel
Jamaica
Mexico
New Zealand
South Korea
Taiwan
Venezuela

No mention of T-Mobile's rates?
...
Couldn't find them on T-Mob's website. Sorry.

Have to use the "Ask T-Mobile" search to find 'em.
😡 Thanks for that. Honest, T-Mob's roam rates are about 10-20% cheaper than CW. 🤭
yes, and that applies to EVERYTHING that tmobile sells.....proving once again that cingular has the highest rates in the industry

If you only plan on using Cingular, whats the point of buying an unlocked phone? Unless you plan on traveling internationally, if you're going to only use Cingular there's no reason to buy an unlocked phone.
...
And if you do plan on going international as long as you meet certain requirments Cingular will unlock the Cingular phone for you!
Cheaper to go lock.
...
yeah we just got an email about the changes in tha, used to be we didnt unlock for hardly anyone, now they do.....makes my day go by a lot easier, not as much yelling.. 😁
...
What are these requirements for unlocking for international travel? I only ask because I am scheduled for a trip to Europe this summer and I would like to be able to use my 6230. Will that be possible?
...
I think that you either need to have a good credit class or need to be with them with good payment for 90 days. I went to london in feb and it worked GREAT!! gotta love nokias 😎
...
To get unlocked for intl roam, active 90 days pretty much.
...
And what do I have to do? Just call in and tell them I am going to Germany for a month and they will do it for me?
Also, will the RAZR work there or should I just use my Nokia 6230?
...
Correct, and the RAZR is a quad-band phone, so it'll work anywhere there's signal.
...
Will they unlock both of them for me (don't have the RAZR yet, but thinking of getting it)? Or do I have to pick which one I want to take with me?
...
They (Tier 2) will unlock the phone you originally bought with your contract. If you buy the RAZR outright/no commitment price, it can be unlocked whenever you want.
...
Oh, okay. Thanks for the info.
So, if I do buy the RAZR outright, will they unlock it right away for me, or do I have to call in?
And, this is probably the question I should have asked in the beginning: Do I even need to have either phone unlocked to travel to Europe. (pardon the stupidity of this question, but I am not used to being able to take my phone out of the country and have it work)
...
If you buy it outright, you'll have to call, and probably fax a copy of the reciept in before getting the code. 🙄
As to your second question, all Cingular tri- and quad-band phones made after 11152004 were locked for intl prepaid SIMs, so if they're that new, yes, you'll need the code.
...
You can go International and use your phone as is right now. But you will get HUGE roaming and even bigger LD fee's. Lots of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ 😳 😳
By getting it unlocked you can then get an international prepaid SIM and plug it into your phone and use it in what ever country the sim belongs to.
...
if you need the unlock code for traveling make sure you call at least 3-4 weeks before you leave the country because I've had it take almost that long for customers to get their phones unlocked.

If I am on a blue plan and have my locked Moto V505 for more than 3 months, will the company unlock it too? When I called into business care and asked for a tier 2 rep to unlock the hone for me according to the new policy, they were clueless, put me on hold forever while they asked a supervisor, and then came back and said it cannot be done.

no, cingular is not unlocking ATT equipment, anyways, this is why i LOVE tmobile, i bought my phone unlocked, it works EVERYWHERE in the world but south korea (yes my phone works in japan too)......there are sites that sell unlocked phones at discounted prices with service agreements w/ tmobile or cingular, the thing is this, any TRI BAND cingular head...

That's if he/she is eligible to add intl roam/dial... 😎
...
actually, where i am, you have to have had the international roaming feature on your account for 90 days, and for international roaming to be put on your account, you have to have at least 6 months of good payment history, so where im at, to get it unlocked, you're looking at at least 9 months of service with us, at least thats the standard way, theres always exceptions 😁
