This is just a guess but popular opinion is that it would be devastating for ATT to loose rights to the iPhone.
So with rumors of a iPhone 4G and a CDMA version, I think yes Apple will offer a CDMA version to VZW and Sprint. But to help keep ATT in the game they along with TMO will get the new 4G iPhone. 😲

Wouldn't that require some kind of a "4G network" to run them on?

It will be almost TWO YEARS before AT&T has any 4G markets functionally deployed, and I don't think T-mobile even has any unallocated spectrum that they could even try to build out a 4G system unless they dismantle a 2G or 3G system to do it.

I expected better from you, andy.

It's funny. It's like the iPhone names are getting confused or maybe a new meaning. Originally it was iPhone 2G on the 2G network. Then the 3G on the 3G network. One would assume 4G would mean for the 4G network. I think a lot of people are taking it as 3rd generation and 4th generation even though that's not really right.

AT&T makes a very good living out of being second. Losing iPhone exclusivity will do nothing to hurt that.

I was at the mall yesterday and the AT&T store was packed to the gills with people signing up. Either these people don't read newspapers or watch TV or live in a cave, or AT&T is just good enough to meet expectations.

I think that AT&T phone selection has been very stagnant since they got the iPhone. I did buy an iPhone recently but I would much rather have one of the new Nokia or Sony Ericsson phones on the market right now. Losing exclusive rights to the iPhone is probably why they are planning on getting 5 Android phones and I think is was 3 or 4 Palm phones with the web OS. I would have passed up the iPhone for any of these but the iPhone is currently the best non-business phone that AT&T carries right now.
